Little Women
• Feb. 26, 2007 - Amazing Grace was a really, really good movie
I don't usually go see movies. Especially not at a theater, where it costs 1/2 the price of the video. I could name on one hand the movies I've seen at a theater, in the past 20 years. (Sneakers, The Incredibles, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Amazing Grace.) This does not make me less discriminating--it is a sign that I am picky, picky, picky about what I watch! :)
Amazing Grace was a very, very good movie! :) The characterizations were great, the historical details clear and (as far as I can tell) accurate, and the plot both interesting and true. (A couple of outfits, however, while apparently true to the time, left a bit to be desired as far as modestly.)
William Wilberforce was a really remarkable man, used to end slavery in the British empire without a war, and much earlier than the US did. This story of his perseverance, even in the face of repeated defeat was very encouraging to me as a homeschool mom.
Due to the sensitive nature of some of his content (chains shown, a brand shown on a black man, a description of the ships and conditions), I wouldn't take a child less than 10 or 12yo. I wouldn't take ALL 10-12yo's, either. However, these are shown in the middle, and the fight against it was also clearly shown. The ending is triumphant, and overall, the movie is very positive.
I highly, highly recommend this movie! |
