• Aug. 16, 2008 - Reading between the lines

I don't watch much TV, but I do love the Olympics--the grace of the gymnasts, the tenseness of beach volleyball, the speed of the swimmers!    But one thing has caught my eye this year, more than ever before.

Perhaps I am reading into things a bit here, but I can see it in the eyes of Michael Phelps' mother.   Fifteen years ago, she was a single mother, raising 3 children.  One of these was a son with an enormous amount of energy.    I can see her in my minds eye, trying to deal with such energy day after day, probably after a long day of work.   I can imagine fairly stressful parent-teacher meetings, maybe questions about referrals for help with sitting still all day.    My mind sees her wondering how on earth she will cope with this child, growing up in today's world with boundless energy and not being quite like the other kids around.    I would be worrying about what would happen as he grew up, and would he ever settle down.  He'd be bigger than she is, soon.

They finally chose a sport, in an attempt to  use some of that energy in positive channels.  Here he meets a coach who can see the neediness in this young boy, and puts time into him, in and out of the pool.    And Phelps succeeds!

I see his mom wondering, remembering, every time, "How did we ever come this far?   If I had known then, what I know now, that this boundless energy would be controlled to a purpose......!"     The relief, the pride, the joy is all there, right on Mrs. Phelps lovely, smiling face--so proud of what her son has become.

And I think the rest of us, who struggle day to day with a child who has way more energy than we do, who may be a bit different from the others, needy in some way, can take a lot of encouragement from her story, as well as his.

What a great post! I think you are right on about how tough it must have been for her while he was growing up and I think she can be an inspiration for all of us dealing with a child who just seems way too hyper.

Turns out, I'm not too far off. Here's a link to a NYTimes article talking to his mom:

(It was written before my post, I think, but I hadn't known of its existence.) It's very encouraging for anyone who struggles with this type of child!

Sis,

This is a great post! And you are so right about Mrs. Phelps. The only thing I'm not sure about is that she is an elementary school principal - so the odds are that she was dealing with him at the school herself - ugh!

I watched the interview with him and his mom a day or two after he won, and definitely found myself thinking the same kinds of things you are. How amazing that the very energy that must have driven her crazy when he was a little boy is what made him the incredible, exceptional young man he is today!

• Aug. 24, 2008 - Olympics & Tapestry of Grace

Posted by Robin
Hello! :) My name is Robin and this evening after I finished blogging, I started doing some more research on Tapestry of Grace. I happen to come by your blog and read what you typed two years ago about TOG.

I saw your schedule for this year and noticed that it does not include TOG. May I ask why you did not continue with it?

We have really enjoyed watching the Olympics as well! :)

Thank you SO much for your time, have a super day, Robin

I've never figured out if I'm supposed to answer questions here or somewhere else, but here it is! :)

A couple of years ago, I did a lot of comparison between Tapestry and Sonlight. I had been using Sonlight for a long time, and used Tapestry for a short time, as well.

We had a lot of "complications" that year, including a move, and I wound up feeling like I needed to do a much lighter year. We did Further Up and Further In, which we enjoyed, though it certainly was light, after years of SL.

After that, I felt the need for my oldest to do more independent work, so we did All American History. After always doing the living book method, and tying everything together, it was refreshing to be able to do one thing, then move to something different. This made me rethink my whole approach.

I still really LIKE Tapestry and Sonlight (as you can see, we are doing Core 5, which covers geography, this year). I am just having a hard time right now with the thought of tying everything to history for another four years. I really like the thought of tying together history, literature, philosophy, etc, but taking four whole years to go through it all again just doesn't fit right for us.

So, we are doing a year of geography, then I'm hoping to do a more traditional high school sequence of a year each in world history, American history, and government. I do plan to hit worldview issues, but in a slightly different context.

My sister is doing Tapestry, and she LOVES it. I still think my reviews of the two are pretty accurate, it just doesn't fit where we are, right now.

(I hope this is helpful.)

Robin,

I'm the sister Melinda mentioned who is using Tapestry of Grace. I used it last year, and am using it again this year. I left a comment on your blog, but just in case you are checking in here often, thought I'd leave an extra comment here. I'd be happy to talk with you about it, and I promise I'll be fair about both positives and negatives. :)
