My Little Women and Men at Home

So Many Choices...

It has been fun reading the ideas that have been left for me.  Thanks for the different ideas for math and phonics.  Of course, I still have to decide what to do...ugh!  Since I'm so drawn to the Phonics Museum, I think I will give Veritas Press a call and see how they compare it to what my daughter is currently using at her school.  Since she is already beginning to read, I want to stay with something that will challenge her, but not be too difficult to grasp.  We will see.

I've had a couple folks tell me about Math-U-See, so I'll look into that.  However, I've also heard that Ray's Arithmetic is good too, especially from folks that have a Charlotte Mason bent.  It is amazing the amount of resources that are out there.  I am so thankful that it is.

On another thought, when doing memory work, how much do you all give your children to work with?  Right now my daughter is memorizing a verse a week from the Bible(school directed at this point)and my husband and I have her memorizing the Shorter Westminster Catechism.  Personally, I feel this is about right, but I eventually would like her to memorize different passages of books or poems.  Any thoughts?

My 3yr old daughter is also picking things up..which gives me such a warm feeling.  Often she is just picking up what her sister does, but I've also been trying to work with her.  I'm using an Alphabet with biblical rythmes out of The New-England Primer, 1777.  She loves the alphabet and enjoys being able to recite the little rythme.

Here's an example(book has a picture):

A-In Adam's Fall

We sinned sll.

B-Heaven to find,

The Bible mind.

It is simple, but she enjoys it and learns some biblical truth.

I think I might add a category for recipes.  I have a few that my family and I like and I'd love to share that.  I'm still figuring this out, but I am so enjoying coming here and sharing.

Mar. 8, 2006 - some little thoughts

Posted by lattegems
I don't always have the best curriculum advice to give, b/c my son is only in the 1st grade, but I have been thinking about homeschooling for so long and I know what I like, and I'll use it until it doesn't work with me or my kids. For instance, my son and I do very well together on Saxon and this is our second year with it. The only thing I hope I remember and a thought you might could use, is that, the children are going to learn with whatever curriculum you choose. If for some reason you don't get to frogs this year, he's not going to get through high school never hearing about them. There are SO many choices and praying and talking to my husband and price all make a difference to me. Also others opinions of certain books have help me decide.
I hope that you can collectively feel confident as you go forth in your homeschooling efforts.

This is my place to come and chat about God, my family, my life, and my homeschool endeavors. I am happily married, with two beautiful "Little Women" and a new "Little Man". We've been homeschooling for a year and are using a Classical Christian perspective and some of Charlotte Mason's principles as well.
