the S.S. Imagination
Posted in Random Ramblings
Squidward: Just when I thought they couldn’t get any stupider.
Let me get this straight, you two ordered a giant-screen television just so you
could play in the box? [Sponge and Pat pops their heads out of the
box]
Spongebob: Pretty smart,
huh?
Patrick: I thought it wouldn’t work.
Squidward: Uh-huh, that’s quite a plan there.
Oh, but wait, there was something else I wanted to ask you two. What was it? Oh,
yeah, yeah. [yelling] Don’t you two have any brains?!
Spongebob: Squidward, we don’t need
television. Not as long as we have our [he spreads his arms from the top of his
head to his sides, forming a rainbow in-between] imagination.
Squidward: [faking enthusiasm] Wow, I never
thought of it that way. That’s really something. [flatly] Can I have your TV?
[Sponge jumps on the hem of the box]
Spongebob: With imagination [Sponge does
that rainbow thing again], I can be anything I want! A pirate! [closes one eye]
Arr! A football player! [imitates holding a football ready to run]
Hup!
Patrick: A starfish!
Squidward: Patrick, you’re already a
starfish.
Patrick: See, Squidward? It works! You try!
Welcome aboard!
You’ve just set sail on the S.S. Imagination... Where our only destination is fantastic adventure! Where do
you want to go first?
For some
reason, I keep picturing this episode of Spongebob in my mind. I get so tired of saying "Turn off that TV!"
a hundred bizillion times a day. So I got this great idea.
I locked the TV cabinet with one of those child saftey locks so the
kids can't turn the TV on.
I am proud to say, today is the third day in our house with no
TV. (For the kids anyway....hee hee) I love it!
So, the kids have been actually using their
I-M-A-G-I-N-A-T-I-O-N-S. They've been playing games,
drawing, coloring, writing... and dare I say ... reading, all by their
little selves. What a nice change around here. I could get
really used to this. Hopefully, soon, they will say, "TV... what's that mom?" or "Mom, what's a Spongebob?"
Now I am using my I-M-A-G-I-N-A-T-I-O-N

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while. I was relying on checking my friends' post by just clicking on the link on my friends page. I've discovered this week, though, that you don't end up seeing all of the posts your friends have made. So, I've been catching up a little. sounds like you all are having a nice spring.
We have tv rules. The girls are not allowed to turn it on by themselves. They know they are allowed to watch a video in the afternoon during their snack time. Only on Sat. are they allowed to watch a cartoon, and that is limited. It makes it much more peaceful when they know what to expect and what is allowed.
I, too, have noticed that since I have been blogging what little time I had to do fun things for me, like scrapbooking, is now gone. I enjoy blogging, but I need to figure out a balance. Keep enjoying these beautiful days. Wish I could get out in them more.

Glad your family is surviving TV withdrawal! The first day was hard for us when we did it, but very easy after that. It was so peaceful at our house and you are 100% right, they use their IMAGINATIONS so much more!
Love,
Marsha
PS By the way, the kids get to watch tv once a week and that is on Sunday morning before church (PBS-- Thomas the Tank Engine, Berenstain Bears and George Shrinks). Since we established this "rule", there has been NO asking for tv. :-) I just LOVE it!

That is so awesome! Putting the TV away is great for families. Kids do things they never will when the electronic friend is in the room! Keep posting - tell us the cool things they do. One day I'll pull out my journal of the six weeks that we didn't have a TV in our house last year - and share some of the cool things my kids got into!

Love it!! :0) How true is that though, the big box takes up so much of our time that it is scary. We only get one channel and to me that is one channel to many!! ;0)

One of the first things I discovered when we began homeschooling last year was how difficult it was to get the kids to read, play or do any kind of schoolwork if they had been watching tv first! So we got rid of ours too. It's not totally gone, it's in mommy and daddy's room. It's nice to snuggle up on a cold winters night with the electric blanket and a cuddly hubby and watch a dvd or some tv. It works out great for us. The kids are incomparably better.

We had our cable unhooked almost a year ago. Now there is nothing on anyway so I never have to say turn off the TV. Before that though I was always monitoring, checking, looking in, I was sick of the dribble that is on Nick, and Cartoon Network. Disney channel is almost as bad, in my opinion. Good for you and your family. It will pay off in the long run.

The last week in April was "No TV Week" and the kids and I did it. All week long my 5 year old daughter told me she wouldn't make it. But here we are almost 3 weeks later and I can hardly GET them to watch television...(yes, I have said, "Please, go watch a TV show.") Honestly, it has been nice and I never would have dreamed they'd choose to hardly watch it :o)
