Rachel and I have been fighting every day about reading time. We are reading Sonlight's "I Can Read It!" I was growing weary about the daily struggle, trying to get her to read, until I remembered this great website, Starfall.
Rachel did several activities on the site, and read two books. TWO! I have trouble getting her to read just one small story from the ICRI! She was even begging to do another one. The child can click on words they don't know and it pronounces them. Some of the pictures are animated when you click on them. She really got a laugh out of those. :-D
Primarily designed for first grade, Starfall.com is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade. It is perfect for Home Schooling.
This website is jam packed with fun stories, games and activities. They even have a download center where you can download and print some fun worksheets to go along with the online activities. You may also order the printed materials that go along with the website for classroom or home use.
Starfall was created by Stephen Schutz and his wife Susan Polis Schutz. They founded Blue Mountain Arts publishing company in 1970, and with their son Jared Schutz Polis they created the popular electronic greeting card site bluemountain.com in 1996. The Polis-Schutz family is passionate about making the world a better place, and is thrilled to have the opportunity to use the Internet to help children learn to read.
So, be sure to check out Starfall, you'll be glad you did! (and so will your kids.)
