Advice for blogging newbies...

Posted in Blogthings

I thought I would post some advice for all those blogging newbies out there.

1.  Post often.  No one likes to read a neglected blog.  Blog about anything.  You'd be surprised what people will read. :-D

2.  Keep blogging, even if you think no one is reading.  Sometimes it takes a while to get noticed and develop an audience.  Once you do, you will make a name for yourself in the blogsphere.

3.  Be involved... in other words, don't lurk.  Leave comments, encourage one another, let others know you are there.  Your comments will lead them to your blog.

4.  Be friendly.  In order to make friends you must show yourself friendly.  Add others to your friends list, (it's FREE!).  I'm sure they will do the same.

5.  Seek advice... ask questions.  Who can resist answering the question...

6.  Break posts up into small paragraphs. You will lose your readers attention if you use long paragraphs. It is much easier to read short ones.

7.  Personalize your template if at all possible.  Just remember to use colors, fonts and backgrounds that are easy on the eyes.  Keep the design neat and clean.

8.  Remember that readers can not see your facial expressions, and might mistake sarcasm for something else.  Use smileys  to show your feelings.

9.  Be kind...trackback.  Use trackback links when referring to another blogger's post.  Let them know you are talking about them.  :-D

10.  If you read a post the offends you, step away from the computer.

Calm down before posting your reply.  Remember, we should choose to be Christlike in all our actions.  Let the words of your mouth be pleasing to God.

11.  Post pictures as often as you can.  People are nosy...uh... I mean, people want to get to know you.  They want to see pictures of your family, home, your chickens, goats, pets, friends, your laundry hanging from the rafters in your house...and any other thing you can imagine.   That is the appeal of blogging.  Others want a glimpse into your world.  (Did I mention people are nosy...) It makes them feel...well, normal!  :-D

12.  Get the whole family involved.  Blogging is a great way to tweak your writiing skills.  It is great for kids, and hubbies.  (Even grandmas, grandpas, in-laws, outlaws and groundhogs.)

13.  Re-read your post for spelling errors and punctuation.  You know what they say, it does count.

14.  Don't type in all capital letters.  That  is called SHOUTING... and it is not very nice.

15.  The most important thing you can do with your blog, is HAVE FUN!!!

HAPPY BLOGGING!!!

November 13, 2005 - That is such great advice!

Posted by takingthechallenge

Seems like there should be a newbie corner to post that and other info that newbies need. I know there are the forums, but a simple, all-in-one place for this kind of basic info would be nice.

Though I must confess, I have absolutely no idea what a "trackback" is or what to do with it.

November 13, 2005 - I hate when our ground hog blogs

Posted by MamaBugs

because he leaves my keyboard so dirty. The hedge hog leaves little pokey things in my chair and the big hog eats all my blogging snacks. It's also very annoying to have to keep spelling everything for them all the time. *SIGH* I'd still rather deal with any of them versus the rats though!

November 14, 2005 - Thank you for the advice and the music!

Even though I've been blogging for a few months, I still needed to make sure I was using proper etiquette! I love the music on your blog. I haven't reached that level in my blogging skills, but one day I'll sit down and tackle it.

Great advice! Thanks. I totally agree about making shorter paragraphs. I don't often read a very long post simply because of a lack of time.
