Mississippi Mission Trip

Posted in Church God Faith

I have been meaning to write this since Saturday night, but I have been exhausted.  We had a great time, but sleep wasn't high on the list of things we did LOL.  Seventeen of us went-- 4 adults, 3 college students, 5 teenagers and 5 children.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from the parking lot,
aboard this tiny ship.

We left last Sunday morning for what was supposed to be a 5-6 hour trip to Ocean Springs.  Thirty minutes into the trip, we had a flat tire on the bus.

We sat on the side of the road for about 4 hours while my husband looked for a tire on a Sunday and tried to get the old one off (it was rusted.)

Finally we found out that Sears had one that could get us back to Columbus but not to MS (right size, wrong weight or something like that.)  So we headed home, crashed at the church and left the next day.

Our church people were great-- they met us for supper Sunday night
and then brought us breakfast Monday morning while Jason went to the Columbus Sears and got new tire
s (we ended up with 4 new ones because of dry rot.)

We finally got to Ocean Springs Monday evening in time for dinner.  I worked in the kitchen all week (we served 3 meals a day plus a snack to 225 missionaries)

; one lady did community surveys; one did acts of kindness (nursing home visitation and such); Jason and the students worked in VBS and also helped with Backyard Bible clubs, fliers and things like that.  They had 200 kids in Bible School at the Y.

Jason said it was awesome to hear 200 kids singing "I Will Follow You Jesus."  He led the music and the worship rally.

I went on a shrimp boat on Friday with the cooking crew.  It was sad to see all the damage along the Biloxi coast.

I was angry that the casinos are being rebuilt
but private citizens can't get their insurance money; or if they do, there are no contractors to build for them.  (They are all working on casinos.)  I liked the boat, but I am terrifed of birds and the gulls hovered over us for a feeding frenzy when he threw the catch back into the water LOL.  This one was cute though.

We went to the beach a couple of times, until 2 of the kids got stung by jellyfish (including Reed.)  It wasn't all that pretty, but there were some pretty parts.  Sunset

Here's a place in Ocean Springs where the road was destoyed and the pieces of it are still all over the beach.

At the end of the week we had a block party for the whole community.  It was great-- hot dogs, puppets, clowns, magic and evangelism.  We had a great crowd.

I was proud of our group; they worked hard and did not complain (much LOL).  Of course, we had a little drama with some of the kids, but that is normal.  All in all, I was very pleased with all of them.  They were exhausted by the end of the week LOL.

Wow! You have some really great pictures of your trip. That tire sure was a mess! It's a crime to be building casino's and tying up the contractors before the families can have their homes re-built.

Sorry about the flat tire, but what a wonderful ministry to the folks in that area! And, look at those kids...they are pooped! They did some hard work for the Lord, didn't they?

Oh, boy, don't get me started on the casino thing. I know, I know it's the "industry" down there, but I hope people are desperate enough to take whatever money they do have, go to the casinos in hopes of getting money to rebuild. It's a catch 22 and a shame that they building efforts didn't get put on families and their homes.

Thank you for adding me to your friends list. I look forward to visiting often!

It sounds like you had a lot of fun and worked really hard too! I know it is hard to see mankind running after sin so hard, but that is what sinners do when they have not been born again! The saddest part is that many of the builders sponsoring these and the politicians promoting this probably consider themselves Christians. Oh that we would truly seek God's counsel in all things!

I sure am glad that you were protected from having any harm with the tires! I am thankful it was only one tire that blew since they all had to be replaced. We had an experience like that on our way to a Beth Moore conference. It is so wonderful to see God's protection!

I am glad you are back and I will be praying for you as you get back into the swing of low carb eating! I know it will be hard! I splurged and had a slice of regular bread today. I had made Alpheus and the girls a BLT with egg and it smelled so good! I just knew it would taste better on bread than my low carb tortilla! After that I have craved more carbs! I just had to pray and pray again to keep from going over to Mamaw's to get something sweet! Philippians 4:13! In Him, Eva

It looks like a great trip!

The If-Then chart is a consequence chart. It also comes with a Blessings chart. You can get them from www.doorposts.net. It lists an inappropriate action (lying, whining, disobedience) then it lists a bible verse related to that behavior. Then it has a blank area where you can list a consequence. The kids and I filled it out together, so they had some input as to what the consequence of the behavior would be. For example, for disobedience, my children have to apologize, then obey immidietly, then they have to write a 1 page paper on disobedience. Name calling or evil speech is a $5.00 fine. I hope that answers your question! If not, just let me know! :)
