Tonight's Church Service

Posted in Church God Faith

Tonight's church service was fun and different.  our Sunday night services are always unique.  Tonight we met downstairs and had school.  I decorated using textbooks and posters from home, the flag from the sanctuary, a globe from the library and Jason brought in a  chalkboard from one of the Sunday school rooms.

I wrote a skit for the pastor and the kids-- the basic theme was one smart kid knew all the answers because he did the homework.  The pastor moved from the skit into his sermon about the Holy Spirit, but kept the school theme going.  It was fun and different.  I love our Sunday nights!  Next week is watermelons and Bible trivia!

Here's the skit:

TEACHER: Good morning, class. I hope everyone did their homework. We are going to have a pop quiz on the book of Genesis (GROANS from the audience) ....orally!

TREVOR: Aww man that's no fair!

ANDY: Just shoot me now!

MONICA: OK

REED: (to the teacher but mostly for laughs) I don't suppose the quiz will be about American Idol winners? (big cheesy grin)

SPENSER: (raising hand and standing) I did all the homework questions and did additional research online!

TYLER: (mocking the Brain in a singsongy voice) I did all the homework questions and did additional research online!

TEACHER: (clearing throat to get them quiet) A-HEM! (or rapping on desk or whatever) QUESTION 1: How many of each animal did Noah take on the ark?

TAYLOR: (standing and raising hand a la Horshack) Oooh Oooh Mr Matthew Mr Matthews! I know this one! (Spenser quietly raises his hand)

TEACHER: Yes Taylor?

TAYLOR: Two. (high fives people around him/her) Oh yeah!

SPENSER: Actually, there were 2 pair of the unclean and 7 pair of the clean animals. The phrase "two by two" in 7:9 simply means the animals entered the ark in pairs. Some scientists think...

TEACHER: (interrupting Spenser) Thank you Taylor and Spenser. Two pairs of unclean and seven pairs of clean animals is correct, (pointedly) as stated in the homework assignment last night. QUESTION 2: How many children did Jacob have?

TYLER: Seven!

MONICA: Four!

CHELSEA: (rousing from nap) Blue?

REED: Ha! Twelve! Everyone knows that. They became the twelve scribes of Jerusalem or something like that.

SPENSER: Well, he did have 12 sons who became the patriarchs of the 12 tribes of Israel but he also had a daughter named Dinah, so 13.

TEACHER: Yes, 13 is correct, which is what was in the reading last night. QUESTION 3: Who were the 2 sons of Joseph who became the 2 half tribes of Israel?

  TAYLOR: Cain and Abel!

CHELSEA: (clueless) Fred and Wilma?

TREVOR: No, you dork, it was Isaac and... the other one.

ANDY: Wrong! It was Solomon and Gomorrah!

SPENSER: (sighing) Ephraim and Manasseh. Jacob bestowed the “double portion” to Joseph instead of Reuben and then when he blessed them...

TEACHER: (interrupting) Yes, Ephraim and Manasseh is correct. Perhaps you should all get out your reading assignment from last night and we will have a review. Spenser, you may have some free time.

SPENSER: Can I go to the library and get some new books? I already read the 7 books I checked out yesterday!

TEACHER: Yes, by all means. Now class, in order to answer these questions correctly, you actually have to read the material and do the homework...

*End of scripted questions*
