I
went to Sam's tonight with my babysitting money. I love that
place. With 4 kids, it really does save me money, I just have to
be careful what I buy LOL. I went alone so I avoided all the
chips, cookies, juice boxes, etc that often end up in the buggy (that's
a shopping cart, in case you don't speak Southern.) Where else
can you buy 36 pop tarts for $2.81. I mean really? I know
that pop tarts aren't real food, but they are a special Sunday morning
treat here. The treat is really for me, not them: we are late for
church and mommy can't fix you breakfast, Daddy had to be there 30
minutes early so grab a pop tart and get in the van. I am a frugal person, 98% of the time, but as a busy mom of 4 (who suffers from chaotic tendencies) I pay for convenience the other 2% of the time. Here are my guilty secrets (now that the pop tart's out of the bag.) I hate washing silverware. I have no idea why, but it has been going on since I was little. I would wash dishes for my mom, but leave all the silverware. So I go to Sam's every couple of months and buy the giant box of 300 spoons and the box of 300 forks. Here's the weird part-- sometimes I wash them and reuse them. Don't ask me, I can't explain it. I often buy paper plates (or styrofoam) and cups too. 6 people x 3 meals a day= lots of dishes. We don't have a dishwasher, so sometimes I indulge myself. I know it is horrible for the environment, but sometimes my sanity requires it. I don't mind washing plates, so I don't buy these as often. I only use Palmolive dish soap, and it has to be the original, not the new fruity flavors (although they smell really good). I don't know why. My mom doesn't use this kind, so its not like a carryover from her, I just really like it. Its suds just right. Our city water is awful so I buy bottled water, but then I refill the bottles from the cheaper 2 1/2 gallon jug of store brand spring water. If I am making tea or lemonade, I use the tap water but otherwise it is too chlorinated. ************ Now I feel compelled to tell about my other side. I am very frugal in other areas. I cannot bear to pay retail price for things, I always shop used or clearance. I almost never buy new books, unless they are a special gift for my hubby. I use ebay, thrift stores, half.com, amazon marketplace or the library. Ditto clothes. I buy used or clearance. 95% of my kids' clothes come from eBay and then I turn around and resell them the next year. They always look cute, but its not because I spend alot. I buy used curriculum, too. Mostly from ebay, but from any where I can fnd what i need. I also take online surveys that pay me in Amazon gift cards- that is how I bought my MOH and CKEB books (which go for almost retail on ebay.) I resell what I am finished with and buy the next year's books. (This one is not duplicatable) We have a movie pass from a good friend who works for Carmike Cinemas. We can all 6 go to a movie for free. I am sorry, I know it is horribly unfair. It is almost my favorite thing ever. (Also, not exactly duplicatable) We all get free haircuts. My cousin took us all for haircuts in January to the place where she gets hers done weekly. She paid that time, but because my husband is a minister, the lady who cut our hair insists on doing it for free. It is like an offering she feels she can give to God (if that makes sense, I am not sure how to explain it.) She even keeps up with when we need it. My cousin will call every 6 weeks or so and tell us to come get our hair cuts (or is it hairs cut) when we can. God has truly blessed us. We don't have alot of money (maybe you didn't know that about ministers ) but He always provides for us in so many ways. |
