What We've Been Doing This Week

Posted in School

Spenser and Reed made an igloo out of sugar cubes.

Spenser had done a lit study on Julie of the Wolves, and Reed studied Mr. Popper's Penguins, so together, they built an igloo out of sugar cubes.  The regular glue melted the sugar, so we had to use hot glue.  It turned out a litte wonky, but cute.  And I love when they work together without fighting.

We have also been studing Ancient Egypt in MOH, so they wrapped each other up like mummies.  I tried to put Spenser in front of a pyramid but it was a quickie job and doesn't look that great:

I didn't get a picture of Reed fast enough-- she broke free rather quickly.

Today we made our first lap book, or whatever we are supposed to call the non-copyrighted ones.  It wasn't as elaborate as some I have seen, but I loved it and the kids had a ball.  I will post pictures later if I get a chance.  The theme was Ancient Egypt, so they made pyramids and mummies and cartouches, etc.  Spenser showed me how to make the pyramid pop up when you open the folder.  I couldn't figure it out, but my 11 year old did.  Sigh.

Yesterday, we had science lab this week with our friends.  The older 6 kids did reports on biomes.  Spenser had to do 2 (deciduous forests and estuaries) and Reed did hers on the savanna.  They both did great (with no fuss.)  I credit Writing Strands.  They made brochures using Microsoft Publisher to go along with their oral reports and they looked rather impressive, I thought.

After the oral reports, we played a food chain game and it was cute and educational.  Meanwhile, the younger kids made a food chain mobile.  We were going to watch The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten (I got it from the library) but we ran out of time, so we are just passing it around.  I also got the book and another book for my younger ones called Brown Cow that is sorta like a food chain but also ties in to what they have been studying (letter C and cows.)

All in all it has been a fun and productive week.

We were supposed to go to Florida for the weekend to see Jason's family but we just couldn't make the money work.  I was sad, and Reed was very sad.  No one else was too devastated, but I thnk we were all disappointed.  ((((the beach))))  One of these days I will actually get to go to the beach, I hope.  *weep*

Tonight we went to eat at Olive Garden (we had gift cards) for our anniversary and Jason's birthday (Monday the 4th).  It was sooo yummy.  I told Jason I was in carbo-palooza.  Then we took Spenser and went to see The Illusionist.  (He was supposed to go to my mom's with the younger girls after going to his friend's house, but he was sad because Reed was at a sleepover and he didn't get to go, too.  Not with her, but with the brother of her friend.)  It was a good movie, I thought.

The picture of your "Mummy" in front of the pyramid is priceless! It reminded me of the Mummified Barbie my son ans I made years ago.

Love the mummy in front of the pyramid! That's hilarious. Where did you find sugar cubes?? I tried ALL last school year to find them so the kids could make a pyramid. But, I'll have to find them this year so we can make an igloo when we study artic habitats! It sounds like you all had a fun week! Thanks for sharing :)

It sounds like you all are having a lot of fun learning! Those are the types of activities that get left out of public school. No way could you use a hot glue gun in ps! That also sounded weird. The regular glue melted the sugar, but the hot glue did not! Ha!! I guess it was a chemical melt and not a physical melt. I hate to admit it, but I don't own a hot glue gun! I guess I will need to invest in one! :) I am so sorry you had to cancel the trip! We have been in Florida for four years and last year was the first time we went to an Atlantic Coast beach (Jacksonville). We are looking forward to visiting St. Augustine in 2007.
Have a wonderful week! I am still trying to recover from all our fun on Monday (got the carb headache)! Later, Eva
