Fruit of the Spirit Part 3 I think

Posted in Church God Faith

Last week, we studied peace.  We practiced a *skit for Sunday morning, so we skipped the games this time.  The Bible study was about Abigail and Nabal and David.  It was a new one for the kids, so that was nice.  I think sometimes we tell kids the same few Bible stories over and over and miss out on many good lessons.

Tonight the lesson was on patience, and the story was Joseph.  This is one of my favorites so the kids have heard it a few dozen times.  I told the story conversationally rather than reading it  so that I could quiz them on the points I thought they should know.  I was a little disappointed that no one remembered the vital part of the story: "What you meant for evil, God meant for good."  I thought I had drilled that into their heads enough they could quote it in their sleep.  Alas.

Instead of a game, we made cookies.  "What do cookies have to do with Joseph?" Sydney asked.  Glad you asked, my dear.  I made them taste each ingredient as we added it to the bowl.  Sugar, brown sugar, peanut butter and even salt were a hit; flour, Crisco, not so much.  Baking powder had a little bite to it.  I didn't let them taste the eggs (salmonella) or the vanilla (I had exactly the amount I needed.)

The point was that not all of the ingredients were pleasant but they all added up to something good.  Like Joseph's life: not all of his experiences were pleasant or good, but God had a plan for him and the results were good.  And so were our cookies.

*The skit was written by a 12 year old in our group, on her own initiative.  Her family doesn't come to church, but she is pretty faithful on Sunday and Wednesday nights.  She brought the skit to me one night and asked if we could do it.  No way I was telling her no-- I was thrilled that she was thinking about church at home and that she was taking the initiative.  We edited it slightly and performed it Sunday morning.  Sadly, she is moving away and won't be coming to church anymore, but she has assured me that her stepmom is looking for her a church where they move.
