Back to Homeschool Week: Curriculum UPDATED

Posted in School

School starts Monday and I am excited, although not as ahead on lesson plans as I would like to be.  But we are just going to jump in and get started!

This year we are using:

  • Language Arts:  Trying something new again this year.  Maybe one day I will fall in love with a Language Arts program.
    • Grammar, Composition and Spelling:  A Beka (grade 7 for Spenser, grade 4 for Reed and grade 1 for Sydney.  Macy will be working on phonics.)
    • Literature:  A hodge-podge of what I deem important for everyone (FIAR for Macy)
    • Handwriting: A Reason for Handwriting for Reed, Sydney and Macy.
  • Math  I know it's not for everyone, but I love Saxon!
    • Spenser-  Saxon Algebra 1
    • Reed- Saxon 54
    • Sydney Saxon Math 1
    • Macy- Alpha Omega Kindergarten Math
  • Science  We enjoyed CKEB so much last year we thought we would stick with the same concept again this year.  Next year I will switch Spenser to Apologia.
    • Spenser- Christian Kids Explore Chemistry
    • Everyone Else-- Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space
  • History Again, this one's a keeper!
    • Spenser & Reed Mystery of History 2
    • Sydney-- Aplha Omega Lifepacs History and Geography
  • Bible
  • Latin The kids love it and ask to do it every day.  I can't argue.
    • Latina Christiana for Spenser (he'll finish Vol 1 and start Vol 2)
    • Latin's Not So Tough Vol 3 for Reed
  • Logic when I can order it, The Fallacy Detective for Spenser.  until then I am given him critical thinking puzzles from online

I just saw your comment on Randi's blog and wanted to see what's going on in your home and school. I'm not a Saxon fan, but love it when someone really does like it. Randi does too. I'm actually going to be borrowing Randi's Fallacy Detectives to use this year. I have wanted to get it but have never actually seen it to make a final decision on it. I'm excited.

Hope your year goes great.

But now that all ya'll have your lists, it's giving me the bug. I'm seriously thinking the Mystery of History, since you're not alone in loving it.

Sounds like a great list of stuff to do! We have the other math program that Saxon recomments: Singapore. We like it a lot.
