WFMW Handwashing

Posted in WFMW

Cold and flu season is just around the corner, so now is a good time to reinforce the importance of handwashing with your kids.  Here is a way to demonstrate how germs are passed:

Put some glitter on your child's hands.  You can use a different color for each child if you are doing this with multiple kids.  Have them go about their normal activities for a little while, then retrace their steps and show them how many different places they left their "germs."  If you are using different colors, you might see that they have transferred their germs to each other.

Next, you can practice good handwashing techniques.  Try just rinsing and observe how much glitter is left on the hands; then show them really good handwashing techniques to remove all the glitter (and germs.)

be posting when you responded so quickly!

What a neat idea with the glitter. Kind of ironic too because we were using glitter in my SS class and another mother and I were talking about how hard it is to get the glitter off before it spreads everywhere as you touch your face, hair, knee, etc! I think I will do this! Thanks!
I wanted to let you know I am doing another blog about the weight thing. 5atkins.blogspot.com for accountability. Still remembering you!

Okay, I am off to bed now! Eva

What a great educational tool. I am always trying to teach my kiddos about hand washing. Last week in school my 6th grader's science teacher had the class look at their grubby hands under a microscope. Those kids were eager to wash their hands after what they saw, let me tell you! Thanks for the fun and interesting suggestion. I cannot wait to try it!

Come by and see me sometime at my Big Yellow House!

Our 11 month old will be getting a liver transplant soon. Since transplant recipients have suppressed immune systems, we will need to be extra careful about things like handwashing. However....I've been having a hard time explaning germs and proper handwashing to my 4 year old, so this is great! Thanks!
