My kids have a dog; my dog has fleas.  Does anyone have any remedies that are cheap and kid-friendly and easy?

Eek! Fleas! I hate those! Happened to a family whom I was staying with. We had to buy those anti flea sprays and spray the whole house, including the mattresses. Preferably have the kids go out for that day or stay over at a friends house while you do that. For the dog, buy anti-flea shampoo and scrub her now, making sure to clean the nooks and cranny, like her paws and ears.

Sep. 3, 2008 - My cats have fleas

Posted by christinemoers

I found www.domyownpestcontrol.com a few years ago. I picked up some Archer IGR (our cats get fleas every single year, and the first year they were horrendous). The Archer IGR is pet/kid safe - just keep them out of the room/house for a few hours. It is expensive (about 50 bucks), but I am not even halfway through the bottle, and I bought it two years ago.

It breaks down the growth cycle - causes fleas to lay eggs that can't hatch - something like that. I just do one treatment at the beginning of summer. I have yet to ever have to do a second one, but if your fleas aren't under control, you can reapply a few weeks later.

I'm cheap - really cheap, and prefer more natural products, but this is something I will buy again when I do run out!

Sep. 3, 2008 - borax

Borax is a great home rememdy to use. Just make sure you have some time to leave home. Sprinkle it liberally all over your carpets, and under beds if you can. Work it into the carpet with a broom, and leave home for a few hours...longer if you can. WHen you get home, vacuum it up. Borax is very abrasive and basically causes the fleas to leak fluid, because it scratches their "shell". Repeat as often as necessary. And try to get some flea meds from your vet if you can. Wash the bedding if the pets have layed on it.

Unfortunately the only thing I have found that really works for me is Frontline. I application lasts 3 months for fleas so you don't have to put it on every month. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Oh when I put it on my dogs I use rubber gloves, put the solution in my palm and rub it al over my dogs. It tends to work better that way, dries faster and they don't get that funny feeling in their back.

Sep. 3, 2008 - Fleas

Before I became a SAHM, I was a vet, and I LOVE Frontline. Now that I have no income, I can't afford it, so I use a Hartz flea shampoo on my doggie. It works pretty well; it won't keep the fleas away, but it'll kill the ones that are on there.

If you go with a flea shampoo, get your doggie nice and lathered and then leave the lather on for 10 minutes - that's the best way to kill the nasty fleas.

Good luck! http://jeniallen.blogspot.com

Definitely try Frontline Plus - it's somewhat $$$ but it actually works. I've found that some of the cheaper brands don't work as well and are a waste of money. Frontline dries within a few hours unlike the cheaper brands that stay wet for days. Also make sure you thoroughly clean wherever your dog sleeps. Wash the bedding etc. If the fleas are in the house, we just used Zodiac brand carpet and upholstery spray and it seems to have worked. You can send the kids and dog out to play, spray the carpet, wait for it to dry (not very long at all), then bring the family back in. Much easier than bug bombs and other flea treatments.

Sep. 10, 2008 - Flea shampoo

If you need an inexpensive flea shampoo....use Palmolive dish soap...regular liquid from the grocery store.... I know it sounds crazy, but it works! I learned this from my vet several years ago when we took in a lost kitten that was COVERED in fleas.

This will kill all the ones there....treatment is next Frontline is great....but I am getting ready to try Lavender oil....all natural & supposedly - fleas HATE it! I am now a single homeschooling momma....would like to be able to cut another expense!
