Every year, I receive informationthrough my local school district about Heritage Fairs. We have yet to participate, but I thought this might be a good place to share the information. I won't transcribe the entire brochure here, but basically, it's about undertaking projects that have a Canadian theme (history, geography, or heritage) and presenting them at a local Heritage Fair (I'm assuming through a local school-- which, please.... doesn't mean the government is sticking their nose in your business!!!! It's a venue.). These projects can be models, caricatures, posters, collections, maps, demonstrations, crafts, artistic displays, short stories and heritage journal writing, poetry, theatrical scripts, debates and public speaking, dramatic productions, music, dance, computer presentations, video "Heritage Minutes", oral interviews, photography exhibits... [taken from brochure]
For more information, please contact your local school district for an information packet (which includes a really cool game-- play it and call it school! what could be easier???), or go to http://www.gnb.ca/0007/heritage/
Relavent school... fun projects... free stuff.... what's not to like????
** there is a curriculum sale for those who homeschool in French on August 28th, 2007. This is not so much for those who are teaching French as a second language, although a friend of mine will be there, touching base with the vendors about the need.
** NOT GOING BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC!!!! Tentative date is September 7th.
As I mentioned, full details and contact numbers/ e-mails can be found at the MAH blog:
Last weekend and this this weekend we've experienced a bit of a reminder that winter is not quite over yet!!! I think we've had more snow these last two weekends than the rest of the season combined...
Last night's support group meeting was cancelled due to the inclement weather, so I checked their site and got the following information...
Next meeting: Friday, April 20th
Next meeting after that: Thursday, May 10th.
On Next Friday's Meeting:
Bring your favorite language arts materials to share with the group. Did you buy something that really bombed? Show us that too. Marlene McDonald, the new owner of HomeSchool and More, will still be able to join us. This will be a great time to meet her and to see the spring catalogue. She'll have more details for us concerning their upcoming open house.
General Information:
Moms In Touch meet at 6:30 Support Group meeting begins at 7:30 We meet at The Christian Church Address: 2181 Mountain Road (across from Bulman Drive). Please use rear entrance (down the little hill - there is parking down there as well)
There is a new site to share events and resources for homeschoolers in the Moncton, NB area. It's a blog, but more of a bulliten-board type thing for events and stuff. Unfortunately it's not here at HSB, but we'll forgive them for that!!! LOL
So... if you're wondering what Moncton homeschoolers are doing, or have opportunity to do, go on over and check it out!!!!
First of all, I have no idea what the prize will be, but maybe I can talk something out of Kris or Gena....
I want your pictures of something to do with homeschooling in New Brunswick. This can be of a field trip, your kids doing school, a display of curriculum you use, a pic of a lapbook.... whatever you can come up with. The more "New Brunswick-y" the better... but use your imagination, or even get your kids to submit something.
Send me your submission, along with your first name, area of the province, how many kids/ how long you've been hs'ing, and a desciption of your picture. All pictures will get posted (unless some joker sends in something I obviously cannot include in a family-friendly blog), so please be sure no one has a problem with that. I absolutely WILL NOT post identifying/ personal info in the interest of protecting kids from internet weirdos. Your e-mail will remain confidential.
So-- get snapping people!
Send to: (remove spaces & insert appropriate punctuation) lunenburgpuddin (at) hotmail (dot) com
Homeschooling in NB is perfectly legal, and the requirement of filling in those annoying forms is based on this section of NB's Education Act. It states:
16(2)The Minister shall, on application of the parent of a child, exempt in writing the child from attending school where the Minister is satisfied that the child is under effective instruction elsewhere.
A copy of the brochure that is sent out to homeschooling families can be found here. It's a pdf file, so you'll need Adobe Reader to view it.
