I went to my state's homeschool convention

This year was different for me.  I still feel like I purchase books that I did not need.  The vendors that I wanted to see were not there.  However, it was still a very good experience.  It is always beneficial to go just to hear the speakers and listen to what others have to say.

I went to Marcia Sommerville's lecture on Tapestry of Grace.  It was very informative.  I went to the table afterwards to hear how to actual do the program.  I have my plans for the next two years set in place.  I was impressed with this program.  I think that I will look at this curriculum again in two years from now after my older son has completed seventh grade.  We are following the Story of the World series.  I am recycling history.  I am not doing anything new however we will approach it differently for the next four years especially for my older son.  My younger son needs work in different areas.  So, I will see about Tapestry.

I enjoyed Debra Bell's How to Prevent Burnout.  I thought that she was encouraging and movtivating.  I hope that I can follow one of her ideas in order to prevent burnout.  She said that we should have the children do less writing in the younger years because it causes resentment towards it in the older years when it really counts.  In the younger years, she suggests more field trips.  I agree.  We will see what the future holds for this one.

The highlight of the convention was meeting the moms from the Well Trained Mind boards.  It was meet the face with the cybername.

The convention had its ups and downs like everything in life, but I truly enjoyed myself.

Freebies from the Old Schoolhouse Magazine

If you have been reading Freebie Fridays for very long, you have probably figured out that I really like E-Books.  They are convenient, easy to store and many times FREE!  But, like anything else, when you start to get a lot of them you have to organize them.  I recently came across a great free E-Book called E-Books What Do I Do With Them All?  This E-Book will tell you why E-Books are invaluable to homeschoolers, along with practical solutions to effectively manage the files once you have them.  If you plan on continuing to download all the freebies I find for you this book, this will come in handy! You will find information on how to download this E-Book HERE.

How about another new E-Book?  The Quest for Thunder Mountain is the first book in the new Tales from Terrestria allegory series.  This is a follow up to the Terrestria Chronicles series. This book was
written to help young adult readers experience the wonder of finding and doing the will of God. It is a great read-aloud for family devotions, classroom use, or just personal reading enjoyment. You will find the entire book in E-Book form for free at this link. There is also a free study guide at the same link.  (They are both near the bottom of the page.)

Here is a free E-Book for those of you who are leaders in the homeschool community.  The Homeschooling Image: Public Relations Basics by Mary Griffith is about
public relations and how to present a favorable picture of homeschooling. This is an excellent resource for promoting homeschooling!  You will find the free download here

This freebie is so great we thought we would run it twice!  The great Bible-based nature publication for homeschoolers, Creation Illustrated, has offered a number of their back issues at NO COST to homeschool support groups.  Simply send an email to ishjl@netscape.net and request the number of back issues you would like to distribute to your support group members (leaders only should ask, please).  They will send them ASAP -- just in time for summertime reading with character-building lessons for students of all ages.  Many readers call Creation Illustrated, "The Christian answer to National Geographic!"  Every issue's a keepsake.  Check it out at www.creationillustrated.com

I'll see you next week right here at - Freebie Fridays!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

An HSLDA E-lert

New Jersey: Calls Needed to Stop Expansion of Government Control Over Homeschoolers

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Your calls are needed to defend parental freedom against three bills that are under consideration in the Assembly Education Committee. These bills aim to expand state control over young people by expanding the compulsory school attendance age.

Assembly Bill 375 would raise the age of compulsory school attendance from age 16 to 17. Assembly Bill 1209 and Assembly Bill 1759 both would raise the age from 16 to 18.
Parents alone know whether it's best for their 16- and 17-year-olds to stay in a formal education setting or follow some other path.  The government cannot know the needs of individual students. One size does not fit all when it comes to school attendance.
ACTION REQUESTED:

Please contact the members of the Assembly Education Committee immediately and express your opposition to these bills. Your message can be as simple as:

"Please oppose Assembly Bills 375, 1209, and 1759. These costly bills will force unwilling, unmotivated older teens to remain in classrooms where they will cause disruption.  Protect the right of parents to decide what educational or vocational path their 16- and 17-year-olds should follow."

It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since these bills undermine the rights of all parents. If your name begins with A-G, call group 1.  If it begins with H-M, call group 2.  If O-S, call group 3. T-Z call group 4.  Also, call your own assemblyman, if he is listed below, regardless of what group he is in. (Use our Legislative Toolbox if you don't know the name of your assemblyman: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox ).

Group 1

Cryan, Joseph - Chair    (908) 624-0880

Voss, Joan M. - Vice-Chair   (201) 346-6400

Jasey, Mila M.  (973) 762-1886

Malone, Joseph R.    (609) 298-6250

Group 3

Moriarty, Paul D.    (856) 232-6700

Pou, Nellie   (973) 247-1555

Ramos, Ruben J.    (201) 714-4960

Group 4

Rumana, Scott T.    (973) 237-1362

Vas, Joseph     (732) 324-5955

Wolfe, David W.    (732) 840-9028

BACKGROUND

You may be told this legislation does not affect homeschooling.  It
does. It would subject homeschool families to additional years of government mandates with respect to family education.

You may be told students who graduate are exempt.  This is correct,
but it does not turn these bad bills into good bills. They destroy parental freedom and control with respect to 16- and 17-year olds who have not graduated.

Raising the compulsory attendance age will not reduce the dropout
rate. Some of states with the lowest completion rates compel attendance to age 18.
Twenty-eight states only require attendance to age 16. Older
children unwilling to learn can cause classroom disruptions and even violence, making learning harder for their classmates who truly want to learn.
Mandating attendance until age 17 or 18 would restrict parents'
freedom to decide if their 16 or 17-year-old is ready for college or the work force. Some 16- or 17-year-olds who are not academically inclined benefit more from valuable work experience than from being forced to sit in a classroom.

Another significant impact of expanding the compulsory attendance age
would be an inevitable tax increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public school.
For more information on compulsory attendance, please see our memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3623 .

Thank you for standing with us for freedom.

Sincerely Yours,

Scott Woodruff

A Request from the ENOCH volunteer coordinator

I know it seems like a long time away but believe it or not, registration for the upcoming Enoch convention is now open.  Check out the website'  http://www.enochnj.org/   The convention is May 30th and 31st (not Memorial Day Weekend).
The list of speakers and topics are quite impressive (Marcia and Scott Somerville and Debra Bell for starters)!!
This year I will be serving as the volunteer coordinator and I just wanted to make you all aware of the opportunity to serve in this way.
We need men, women, and young adults on both Friday [1:30 to 9:30pm] and Saturday [8:30am to 6:30pm]. Most positions require only 2 1/2 hours of your time [feel free to give more!]. ENOCH would like to thank its volunteers with either Early Bird shopping at the Used Curriculum Sale [Friday 8pm-8:45pm only] or with ENOCH Bucks which can be used toward the purchase of workshop tapes, meals at the convention facility, most vendors, and at the Used Curriculum Sale.
If you choose to volunteer, simply answer “Yes” to “Volunteer?” when you register, either by mail or online. At the end of your online registration there will be a link for you to follow to our new automated online volunteer program. I strongly encourage you to register now! When you register early, you are able to take advantage of the early-bird registration rates and it will increase the likelihood of you getting the volunteer position and shift you want.
If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact me at either bailliemk@yahoo.com or at (856) 482-2963. I would be very happy to help you find the best place for you to serve.
Warmly,
Kathi Baillie
Volunteer Coordinator

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's Homeschool Minute: Special Bulletin

I want to share this Special Bulletin from the Old Schoolhouse Magazine.  Please click on the links, especially the Sunland Christian School and the complete court decision:

"The fundamental theory of liberty upon which all governments in this Union repose excludes any general power of the state to standardize its children by forcing them to accept instruction from public teachers only. The child is not the mere creature of the state; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations." (Pierce vs. Society of Sisters, 1922)

What In the World Is Going On In California?
By Karen Braun

By now, most homeschoolers across the country have heard about the California appellate court ruling handed down on February 28 ordering the children of Phillip and Mary Long to attend public school or a legally qualified private school. The judge's ruling surprised everyone and sparked a firestorm of concern among homeschoolers nationwide, many wondering if homeschooling had become illegal in California.

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine staff has been following the developments since World Net Daily first broke the story a week ago. In this Homeschool Minute, we would like to provide a brief summary of the events and offer links to various perspectives to help homeschoolers understand this ruling, how it impacts homeschoolers in California, and what homeschoolers across the nation can do to help.

To gain a better understanding of this case, it is necessary to note that prior to this ruling, the Long family had been involved with the juvenile court system regarding the care of their children. Such proceedings are confidential, and in most cases, a court-appointed attorney is provided to represent the interests of the minor children. The attorney representing two of the children was not satisfied with a ruling made by Superior Court Judge Stephen Marpet, who found the children's education to be "meager" but determined that Phillip and Mary Long have a constitutional right to school their children in their own home. The attorney for the children brought an appeal before the Second Court of Appeals of California.

The California Second Appellate Court in Los Angeles found that the Longs had not demonstrated that any of the exemptions to California's compulsory attendance applied to their children. The court reversed the finding of the Superior Court and ordered the children to attend public or a "legally qualified" private school. The court remanded the case back to the lower court for a hearing to determine if the family was in compliance with the law. The family plans on appealing this ruling decision to the California Supreme Court.

Read the complete court opinion here.

The ruling spurred reactions from attorneys representing various homeschool groups and interested parties across the country. The Homeschool Minute provides these links for informational purposes related to this case and does not necessarily endorse these sites.

Sunland Christian School. The Long children were enrolled in this school.

Pacific Justice Institute (PJI). These attorneys are representing Sunland Christian School and advising the family.

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). HSLDA presents several appeal options to reverse this ruling or diminish its impact upon California homeschoolers. There is a petition available for those interested in supporting the HSLDA's move to depublish the ruling.

National Home Education Legal Defense (NHELD). Attorney Deborah Stevenson offers a detailed and informative analysis of this case.

Several homeschool groups in California issued statements concerning this ruling:

Homeschool Association of California

California Homeschool Network

Christian Home Educators of California

Private and Home Educators of California

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement in support of homeschooling:

"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children. Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."

By the end of a long news week, the court decision reached the broader Christian community through a radio broadcast by Focus on the Family. Dr. Dobson discussed the California court case with several prominent guests.

WONDERFUL RESOURSE FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY

You all know how TOS is a quarterly magazine? Well a lot of our readers wish the magazine came monthly. So guess what we're going to do?

No, we're not making the magazine a monthly.

Instead, we are going to start sending our magazine subscribers something brand new online monthly between magazine issues.

It's called The Teacher's Toolbox and you all are going to love it!

Each edition, we'll  focus on a different topic giving you words of encouragement, hands-on teaching ideas, book recommendations, field trip suggestions, and then some type of bonus download item.

This online mini-supplement to TOS is a FREE resource only for our subscribers! If you're a TOS reader, but have been buying your copies at a bookstore, now would be a great time to subscribe.

We'll be sending out the first one at the end of this month, and you are NOT going to want to miss out.

It's supposed to be a surprise, but I can tell you this much - the topic is perfect for Spring, has some great science ideas, and the freebie gift itself, practically covers the price of your subscription!

So, here's what you need to know.

If you are a current TOS subscriber, you'll want to make sure that we have a correct phone number on file for you. Your phone number will serve as your subscriber number and will be how you retrieve your online free gift. Email customer service if you have any questions or need to update your number.

If you haven't subscribed yet, NOW is your chance. This month's toolbox is scheduled for March 24th.

You won't want to miss out on all of the great resources. Just click one of the appropriate links on the side to become a TOS subscriber and make sure that you don't miss out on this month's Teacher's Toolbox.

Another change is this:  Confirmation will be via email, so be sure to include your email address when you register whether online or by snail mail.  Those without email will have to check your bank for a canceled check.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in Montville, March 8,9,15,16

C. S. Lewis' captivating novel comes to life on stage for four spectacular nights. Montvale Evangelical Free Church presents The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, a play based on the first book of "The Chronicles of Narnia."

This theatric presentation features an original score, dramatic costume and set design, plus an array of local talent from Bergen County, New Jersey; and Rockland County, NY. Pastor Chris Coppola (Park Ridge) is Pastor of Worship Arts at Montvale Evangelical Free Church. Rose Curry (Montvale, NJ) directs the production. Tony Capparelli (Dumont, NJ) is the artistic designer. Lynda Weigle (Ridgewood, NJ) is the costume designer. Ryan Connor (Montvale, NJ) is the lighting designer. Steve Andersen (New City, NY) is the fight director. John DeGroot (Fair Lawn, NJ) is the composer of the original score. Actors of all ages, elementary school to adults, have joined together to tell the tale of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.

Written in 1950, and set during World War II, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has been adapted for stage, television, radio and cinema. Most notable is Walt Disney Pictures film entitled "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," which was released in December 2005. The tale is wholesome, universal, and family-centered. The story's message parallels the Gospel themes of temptation, betrayal, death, resurrection, and redemption. Montvale Evangelical Free Church (MEFC) had great success with another C. S. Lewis work "The Magician's Nephew" two years ago. Based on the audience response to that production, MEFC was inspired to dramatize The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Performances of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe are March 8th (Sat), 9th (Sun), 15th (Sat), and 16th (Sun). Saturday shows begin at 7:30 pm. Sunday shows begin at 5:00 pm. Admission is FREE.

Montvale Evangelical Free Church is located at 141 West Grand Avenue in Montvale, New Jersey. The church is conveniently situated minutes off the Garden State Parkway and the New York State Thruway. For more information, call the church office at 201-391-6233.

Upcoming Manusoratorium Home School Debate Event, March 13-15

This spring a regional qualifying NCFCA tournament will be held at FEE, the Foundation for Economic Education. This is an excellent opportunity to observe both speech and debate events and is free and open to the public. You may come to observe, have your pre-teens time a debate round, or judge a round.

This is the first time a NJ debate club will be co-hosting a tournament of this size, for which the organizers covet your prayers. Anticipated are over 100 students participating in the events that run for three days. Please prayerfully consider serving as a judge because judges are the key to a successful tournament - a tournament can’t run without judges (over 100 judges from throughout the community are needed). Parents, business owners, government officials, pastors and grandparents can serve as judges!

For more information on this event that runs from March 13 – 15, 2008, please visit freedom.homeschooldebate.org. Feel free also to contact Eunice Au at 732-937-8960 or manusoratorum@gmail.com for answers to your questions.
