Family Presentations
Assigning presentations creates special family memories while teaching our children to research and organize a presentation in a safe environment.
If you are teaching multi-aged students in one subject area, assign independent readers supplemental material to read on their own, with the purpose of sharing their findings with the family. By doing this, you have a perfect opportunity to give your students practice in presentation skills.
For example, when we study Ancient Egypt, I assign my early reader Tuts Mummy: Lost and Found. I assign my better reader a book on how the pyramids were built, and I assign my oldest child a research project to study hieroglyphics, using many resources.
They prepare presentations for the family about what they read. Then, a couple of weeks later, we will gather around to listen to the presentations. By requiring an occasional presentation of the books each student reads, the entire family benefits from every persons independent learning.
These family book report presentations can be as elaborate or as simple as your family wishes. For the more creative family, students can create posters and models; for the more scholarly family, students can write a well-designed speech; for the technical family, students can create a multimedia presentation with PowerPoint to make their presentation personally rewarding.
Save family presentations for evenings, when Dad can benefit as well. Students have a lot more fun learning about history if they are able to discuss historical events as an entire family. I know that my husband enjoys what we discover during our studies, and finds our education fascinating, but hes rarely included. This is a perfect way to involve him in each childs education and display the benefits of homeschooling in a very practical way.
Here is a great opportunity to bless another homeschool family who is going through a difficult time. Let's get this family some post cards from New Mexico! Here is the information:
We have here in New Zealand a wee boy who has cancer & we are trying to get as many postcards around the world sent to him & his brother (both home schooling) to put some brightness in their day. They are living 7 hours away from home so Sean can have treatment.
In the past you have been able to share with so many other bloggers when a family needed prayers & thoughts - I was hoping you could do it again for a family in New Zealand
This is a call for support from homeschoolers around the world.
Sean Ternent age six from our local homeschool group has - Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. It's a Non-Hodgkins Cancer.
Sean is currently receiving chemotherapy at Starship Hospital. His mum, Catherine, dad Mark & older brother Cameron (9) are staying seven hours away from home at Ronald McDonald House so they can be close to Sean. They will be there until Christmas at this stage.
Both the boys are fascinated with travel and are very interested in geography and different countries. It would be wonderful if they could receive postcards from around the world (including New Zealand) to help brighten their day You could share a bit about the town you live in.
Please send Post cards to:
Sean & Cameron Ternent C/o Starship Children's Hospital Ronald McDonald House P.O. Box 92024 Auckland New Zealand
