The 14 days of homeschool
(tune of "THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS")
The 14 Days of
Homeschooling
On the first day of homeschool my neighbor said to me,
"Can you homeschool legally?"
On the second day of homeschool my neighbor said to
me,
"Are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"
On the third day of homeschool my neighbor said to me,
"Do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you
homeschool legally?"
On the fourth day of home school my neighbor said to
me,
"What about P.E., do you give them tests, are they
socialized, can you
homeschool legally?"
On the fifth day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "YOU ARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E., do you give
them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool
legally?"
On the Sixth day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "How long will you homeschool, YOU 'RE SO STRANGE,
what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they
socialized, can you homeschool legally?"
On the seventh day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "Look at what they're missing, how long will you
homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE!, what about P.E., do
you give them tests, are they socialized, do you
homeschool legally?"
On the eighth day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "Why do you do this, look at what they're missing,
how long will you home school, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, hat
about P.E. do you give them tests, are they
socialized, do you homeschool legally?"
On the ninth day of home school my neighbor said to
me,
"They'll miss the prom, why do you do this, look at
what they're missing, how long will you home school,
YOU 'RE SO STRANGE!, what about P.E., do you give them
tests, are they socialized, do you homeschool
legally?"
On the tenth day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "What about graduation, they'll miss the prom, why
do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long
will you home school, YOU ARE SO STRANGE!,
what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they
socialized, can you homeschool legally?"
On the eleventh day of home school my neighbor said to
me, "I could never do that, what about graduation,
they'll miss the prom, why do you do this, look at
what they're missing, how long will you homeschool,
YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E. do you give them
tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool
legally?"
On the twelfth day of homeschool my neighbor said to
me, "Can they go to college, I could never do that,
what about graduation, they'll miss the prom, why do
you do this, look at what they're missing, how long
will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, What about
P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can
you homeschool legally?"
On the thirteenth day of homeschool I thoughtfully
replied:
"They can go to college, yes you can do this, and they
can graduate, we don't need the prom, we do it cuz we
like it, they aren't missing anything, we'll
homeschool forever, WE'RE NOT STRANGE!, We give them
P.E., life it self's a test, they are socialized, AND
WE HOMESCHOOL
LEGALLY!
On the fourteenth day of homeschool my neighbor said
to me, "How can I get started, why didn't you tell me,
where do I buy curriculum, when is the next
conference, WILL PEOPLE THINK WE'RE STRANGE? I think
we
can do this, if you will help us, can we join P.E. and
we'll homeschool legally.

Supper Dilemmas
Homeschooling is a full time job, and it is so difficult (impossible?!!!) to keep up with everything we must do. Taking care of children, teaching them, keeping up with laundry, cleaning the house, paying bills, running errands, AND cooking meals is MORE than a full time job! One of the most difficult jobs for some of us is planning and preparing supper. By suppertime, we are exhausted! Our mind is so tired, we can't even think of anything to make! Do you feel like you'd like a maid to come in and prepare supper for a week? Well, here in Albuquerque, we are fortunate to have something almost as good as a maid. We have a few businesses in town who cater to those who want a break from planning and preparing meals but still want to have a family sit-down supper. Check out the links below. Maybe a break from thinking about supper plans is just what you need to break those winter duldrums!

Remember the Marriage!
Sometimes as homeschooling parents, we can be so focused on the children that we forget to focus on our spouse! January is often a great time to look at our homeschool progress, but February is a great time to look at our marriage progress! If we want to have a strong, successful homeschool, it is important to have a strong, successful marriage, too.
On Sunday, February 11, 2007, churches across the nation and around the world will be proclaiming God’s message on marriage in celebration of Covenant Marriage Sunday. For more information, see the Covenant Marriage web site.
A great way to focus on your marriage this month is to attend the Weekend to Remember Conference at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort, February 23-25, 2007, near Bernalillo, NM. For more information and to register for this event go to the Family Life web site.

Albuquerque Vote February 6
I have always wondered how Christians can consciously vote to support the government school systems. On election days, Christians have actually asked me, "Did you vote for the children today?" I wanted to ask them, "Do you mean to ask me if I voted for my family's hard-earned money to support the schools that teach evolution, pro-homosexuality, anti-Christianity, and liberal agendas?" I want to answer, "No, as a Christian, I feel that it would be completely wrong for me to support these things. So I never vote to waste money on this type of schooling."
We have a tendency to think that the government system has always been here, and it must always be here, and that somehow, it is a necessary part of our country. But the government school system has failed over and over again. I feel we MUST bring change to this system of education, and I think the only way our voices will be heard is through our pocketbooks. Unfortunately, the only way I see that the government school system will ever change is by the financial collapse of the system.
Money keeps pouring into the government schools, and it has been proven that more money does NOT mean better education. Did you know that just this February 6 election alone will cost the Albuquerque Public School taxpayers about $50,000? That money is for the election alone. The amount of money that is wasted is in the government schools is unbelievable. I have had my children in private schools as well as our home school. The private school that my children were in had lockers that were "hand-me-downs" from a public school. These lockers were in fine condition, but they weren't good enough for the public school. Waste such as this goes on all the time.
Did you know that the last school bond vote which significantly increased our taxes was just last September? Do you know how few people were instrumental in this tax increase? Only nine percent of those eligible to vote did so. Of those nine percent that voted, 57 percent voted for the bond, and 43 percent voted against it. So approximately five percent of the eligible voters in Albuquerque affected the taxes of all property owners in the city. A Christian should never think that his or her one vote really doesn't count; it does count, greatly!
Principles Community Impact News had this to say about the February 6, 2007 election:
School Tax Election - Tue, Feb 6
Tired of two school tax elections a year? What is the total budget for education? Is there a conflict of interest for APS to promote their own bond issue? What recourse is there when the majority of people voting for school taxes are employees or parents of public school students?
APS usually gets what it asks for. At two elections a year, APS can raise more income. David Grieves (Note 1) of Yes For Our Children said there won't be another school tax election for two years after the election on Feb 6. Yes For Our Children has an operating budget of about $45,000 dollars this year but typically operates with $50K-$60K. Each color post card that goes out to selected zip codes with high voter turnout costs the organization about $6,000 per mailing. Yes For Our Children sends three to four post cards per election. Admirably, the director David Grieves receives no salary. Grieves raises the money separate from school taxes but APS does pay for election expenses. A single election costs APS (taxpayers) approximately [$50,000] (Note 2). APS officials are not supposed to advocate voting "for" the school bond but APS nevertheless contributes taxpayer resources such as the APS website and personnel (Rigo Chavez, 881-8421 x2 and Kizito Wijenje, 848-8892) to "educate" voters about the election.
There is no tie between APS and the City of Albuquerque, so public education cannot be included in the city budget. APS is overseen by the city school board composed of seven members representing the community. However, school tax elections could be combined with other elections to save taxpayer's money. However (again), a combined election draws more voters to the polls that might be more concerned about taxes. A separate election has a low turnout composed mainly of APS employees and parents that stand to benefit from the school taxes. Teachers send notes home with students to remind parents to vote. Turnout for major elections is typically about 50% or more of registered voters. School bond elections can draw as few as 10% or less of registered voters.
The only bond not passed in the Nov 06 election was the one called a tax - "Gross Receipts Quality of Life Tax." Nomenclature is important to deceive the voter into thinking he/she is not spending any money. Call a school tax a school tax instead of a "two-mill levy" and see if it passes. Advertisements emphasize "all while maintaining the current tax rate." Was the election for the original tax increase advertised as a permanent tax ad infinitum? Taxes should be evaluated on their own merit and not continued just because the organization has discovered a way to keep spending the money year after year. Reducing taxes is just as important as not increasing taxes. Show the taxpayers a total budget for education and provide accountability in keeping that budget while achieving a promised level of quality.
Principles CIM is just as concerned about education as the next person but have we forgotten the requirement is education, not public education. Poverty is linked to illiteracy. Businesses and organizations benefit from a well-educated population. But if students get educated, why does it matter where they are educated? Private education has proven more efficient and produces better educated students. Educate NM provides an option - school choice. Without competition, the oversight of accountability is costly and bloats administrative costs. House Bill 34 (PUBLIC SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY & ASSESSMENT), sponsored by Mimi Stewart, is a 21 page document with the details of public school accountability.
Think NM has an idea for improving public education in their publication Making New Mexico’s Public Schools World Class through Decentralization, Competition and Choice (2000). This publication proposes a "third way" to improving New Mexico's public schools, a middle path between the extremes of the status quo and vouchers. The report describes Think New Mexico's proposal for moving more power down to the state's individual schools by allowing New Mexicans to choose to implement site-based management. Site-based management would allow the principal, parents, and teachers at each school to make decisions about curricula, budgets, and hiring and firing. In tandem with New Mexico's open enrollment law, this would allow public schools to set their own paths, and students and parents to choose the school that is best for them.
Gov Johnson vetoed a bill in Mar 2002 that would have separated APS into smaller, more accountable districts only "after the APS board agreed to consider hiring private companies to manage failing schools." Johnson threatened to sign the bill, but said board President Leonard DeLayo had pledged the board's support for getting proposals from private companies to manage some APS schools. Smaller districts and school boards tend to produce more graduates and better students through greater accountability, smaller administration, and more parent involvement.
If businesses and organizations are concerned about the quality of education, they will likely make a better investment in private education, allowing children from all levels of society to choose their schools through scholarships, tax credits, or school vouchers.
Please send your comments regarding school taxes to principles@integrity.com.
(Note 1) Thanks to David Grieves for spending the time to provide information on the organization Yes For Our Children. We both agree that education is important. One of his children attended a private school.
(Note 2) Cost of election not verified due to non-responsive APS and County staff. The County bills APS for the election and neither organization can locate a previous bill.
Please, get out and vote February 6!

New Mexico Homeschoolers in the News
I was so excited when I got my last Focus on the Family magazine! Right there on page thirty was a picture of Dr. Dobson with a group of homeschoolers from the Clovis Area Home Educators. The article commended a group of 30 teens from the group who raised a whopping $30,000 through 20 fund raisers for Focus on the Family's Option Ultrasound Program. Congratulations to the Clovis Area Home Educators on such a wonderful job well done! Your hard work will make such a difference in the lives of so many. |

Meaningful Christmas Ideas
Christmas is just around the corner
and
Terri Johnson from
Knowledge Quest Maps
has some great ideas to
Get Rid of the Gimmees!
9 Steps to a Meaningful Christmas for You and Your Family

Christmas can be a magical time for children. Yet this holiday can also bring out whininess, disappointment and an ungrateful "gimme, gimme" attitude in our normally sweet children. How can we, as caring parents, counter-act this contagious and disheartening attitude? Let's use the word CHRISTMAS as an acrostic to remember some key thoughts and actions that can help our children (and ourselves) gain a proper perspective and appreciation for this most holy of holidays.
C - The letter "C" stands for two words - candles and carols. Light your home with the glow of candlelight. The presence of candlelight evokes a holy essence in your home - fitting for the holy occasion that we celebrate. Fragrant candles are even better! And remember to sing the carols of Christmas - together as a family and to yourself as you go about your daily tasks. Play them also on your stereo. The words of the traditional carols will imprint themselves upon your heart and mind and upon the hearts of your children as well.
H - The letter "H" stands for homemade. Christmas does not have to empty your bank account. In fact, the most meaningful Christmas gifts are usually the ones that are the least expensive. Children naturally love to give the creations that they make. Help them to find gifts that they can participate in the making of - simple yet thoughtful gifts that show their love and care for the receiver. (This year, my children are making fleece scarves and pocket warmers for their cousins and other relatives.)
R - "R" stands for reading the Christmas story. Do not forget to spend time in the Word of God, reading the account of our Savior's birth. He is the reason we celebrate this time of giving. We follow in the footsteps of the wise men who gave their precious gifts to an infant King, the Savior of the world. And do not just read it aloud together once, but several times throughout the upcoming weeks. (Helpful hint - this relates to letters "M" and "A" below.)
I - "I" stands for invite. Open up your home and invite your friends and neighbors in for tea and cookies. Why keep all those yummy cookies to ourselves when we can share them with friends? Don't worry about having your home look like a picture out of a magazine. We don't need to be perfect. Our homes do not need to be perfect. But we do need to share the love of Christ with our friends and neighbors.

Best Online Geography Sites
BEST ONLINE GEOGRAPHY GAMES AND QUIZZES
provided courtesy of
Knowledge Quest, Inc.
1.Sheppard Software has provided many free and fun to play geography games at their website - http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm. There are various levels of play so that your beginners and advanced students alike can find something to hold their interest. You do need to have Flash Player 6 or higher on your computer to be able to play these games, but no other downloading is necessary. The instructions are minimal, so it takes a few minutes to get the hang of the games in some instances (or at least it did for me!). Also, they do have other games across the curriculum, so feel free to check out their science and vocabulary games as well - plus many others!
2.If you or your children like puzzles, then you will love this website! At this website - http://www.yourchildlearns.com/geography.htm - you can either play with the on-line puzzle maps, or you can download them to your own computer. If you would rather not download them, here is the direct link to the online map puzzles - http://www.yourchildlearns.com/map-puzzles.htm. These are a lot of fun and a great learning tool for kids of all ages (yes, even adults!).
3. Take National Geographic's Geography Bee quiz! These questions can be fairly tough, but you get a second and even third chance to get them right (there are only 3 choices per question) thereby allowing you to KNOW the answer, which you are unlikely to forget. Also, the questions are new every day, so you can play every day and get new questions to answer. Very fun! Here's the website - http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee
4. Test your knowledge of world or regional geography with this fun quiz at http://www.lizardpoint.com/fun/geoquiz/. A great aspect of this game is that children can see improvement quickly, even by their second round at the same quiz. Builds confidence and knowledge!
5.This quiz site - http://www.ilike2learn.com/ilike2learn/geography.asp - allows you to not only learn about the countries and capitals of the world, but also the mountains and bodies of water. If you need a hint, or the answer, it comes in the form of a pop-up, so you may need to disable your pop-up blocker. This site seems to add new games frequently. Great learning tool!
6.Another great quiz site - http://www.actionquiz.com/quiz.php?trivia=geography. Here you can play against other kids and teachers and see if you can win. You do not have to use your real name (no reason to, so don't!) and the game uses a pop-up window. So, if your computer blocks pop-ups, you either have to disable that feature to play, or if you get a message that allows you to open the pop-up, you can go about it that way. Warning: this is a fun game to play and rather addicting. After playing five times against some strong opponents, I finally won!
7.This website - http://www.geosense.net - also allows you to play alone of against another player. You are asked to not only identify countries of the world but cities as well. It is quite challenging and also very addicting. I played six rounds against my opponent and only won twice (and I thought I knew my geography like the back of my hand - reality check!). If you do not mind that your scores are not recorded in their log, you can play as a guest. Or create a login ID to keep track of your scores and establish an identity at this site.
8.This quiz site - http://www.garyradley.com/games - has both "find" games and "quiz" games giving your students a well-rounded familiarity with the countries of the world. My only trouble with these particular games was that it was sometimes difficult to click on the correct country because the hand spread over more than one country area. But overall, this is a great site to round out your online geography games.
GREAT REPORT SITES
Atlapedia and CountryReports are two great sites for general information. If your child or student needs to find some facts on a given country or view/print some maps for a particular region of the world, Atlapedia is a great all purpose website for gathering information for research papers, etc. - The website is http://www.atlapedia.com/index.html. Full color physical and political maps are available. Also, CountryReports lets you drill down on a world map to the country you are interested in and gives you some great facts and information and maps of that area. The website is http://www.countryreports.org/.
JUST MAPS - BUT REALLY COOL MAPS!
Would you like to see what the earth looks like a night as seen from space. This view of the world was taken from photos of the earth at night from a satellite. The earth is lit only from the city lights of civilization. Spectacular! - http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html
Okay, everyone knows about Google Earth, right? This is an incredible piece of software that is taken from actual photographs of the earth. In fact you can zoom right down into your own backyard. Mind-boggling! The software needs to be downloaded onto your computer. It is located here - http://earth.google.com/
FUN VIDEO SITES
Yes, this is one of my favorites! At this website - http://www.animatedatlas.com - you can watch a five or ten minute video about the growth of our nation. Superb and educational!
TEACHER RESOURCES
Are you in need of some worksheets to print out that will reinforce the geography you are teaching to your students. Here is a great site with lots of printables (my computer tells me that is not a word, but I think you know what I mean) - http://www.tlsbooks.com/geographyworksheets.htm.
