Freedom of homeschooling!!
I have to say that I love the freedom of schedule that hs'ing affords our family. We do a modified year-round schedule, and it's such a great fit for us. For instance, we started our new school year the first week in August so that we could take extended breaks at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This week, we "did school" on Monday & Tuesday, and now we're on Thanksgiving break. Doing it this way allows me the time to get ready for our road trip, while not having to worry about getting school done.
After today though, I'm wondering if I should have planned school for this whole week--the kids are out of sorts at having all this free time, and are whiny with me & snippy with each other! Oh, the joys of motherhood! :)

It is only 5:30 AM where I live, I am newly out of bed and have not quite finished my first cup of coffee. When I saw your post on the last 100 blog entries, I thought the title was "Freedom From Homeschooling." Oh, well... I am more awake now.
My daughter and I do a modified year round schedule too. I have to submit something to the school, so we do have an official schedule, but... on most days we don't look at it. And... we have only been homeschooling for 1 year so I am by no means an expert.
I wanted to share something I did last year. I was preparing an adoption dossier and didn't really have time to school. I didn't have time for my daughter to interupt me 1,000 times a day to bemoan her deep and utter boredom either. We got a book at the library. (We used Carry On, Mr. Bowditch) And read the book together in the morning. I gave Marissa an assignment from the book. Nathanial Bowdich learned foreign language's himself. He started with an Bible in his native tongue, a Bible in the language he was trying to learn and a dictionary. After we learned that, I sent my child to the computer (her favorite place) and had her translate John 1:1 into Spanish and French. I gave her a Haitian/English dictionary the next day and had her do that too. Mr. Bowditch sailed. We printed a map and she drew in his voyages on another day. Mr. Bowditch was interested in astronomy... another mini assignment. Another day, she had to draw a scene from the book. Marissa loved it. I thought, "If only I was more creative, we could do this all the time..."
