Homeschooling Through High School
Does the thought of homeschooling your child/ren through high school strike fear into your heart? Do you have a child that does not fit the "high achiever" profile, or one who would rather do anything but school work?
Karen Davis will address these issues at the Second Annual Love to Learn Conference* in August, with the topic "A Relaxed Approach to High School at Home." Join us to hear Karen speak and explore a way to approach high school that puts you and your teen/s on the same team, on August 16, 2008, at Catawba Valley Community College, in Hickory.
Karen Davis has one homeschooled graduate, and three more children at home, ages 17, 11
and 7. If you would like to hear Karen and other wonderful speakers, visit http://www.LoveToLearnConference.com* for information on how to register for the second annual Love to Learn Conference*!
*The Love to Learn Conference was created to fill the need for up to date, accurate, unbiased, information concerning issues that affect the climate of homeschooling in North Carolina. We want to provide a variety of speakers and sessions on a wide array of homeschooling topics. There will be something for everyone from the beginning homeschool family to those more experienced. We are pleased to create an inviting environment for the sharing of homeschool information. We are inclusive, and open to all homeschoolers. We hope you come to enjoy and share this homeschool journey.
Please join our grass roots effort to get the word out by sharing this post with other homeschool lists!

Early College for Randolph County
It is time for Fall registration at Randolph Community College. It really is a simple procedure with only
three steps:
1. Fill out an application
2. Fill out the Concurrent Enrollment Release Form
3. Turn in high school transcripts (grades and
test scores)
High school home school students, who are at least 16 years old, can get started on university transfer courses or take classes to earn an associate degree tuition FREE at Randolph Community
College. Classes are available online, at your home or on the RCC campus.
I would like to reach the home school population to tell them about this free program. If you have e-mail addresses for any of the home school folks in your area please send them to me.
The state of NC offers tuition free classes in the public high schools, but also offers the tuition free classes to home school students as well. I find that many still do not know about this program. Also, I can help you register with ease for the fall semester. Fill out the document - Concurrent
Enrollment Release Form - which can be located on our website listed
below: http://www.randolph .edu/academics/ pdf/Dual_ Enrollment_ Form.pdf
The name of the school is whatever you named your school with the state. The name of the principal is the person you named as principal. We also need transcripts from your home. List the name and date of the courses taken in your home school high school along with grades and end of grade test scores. Next, mail the form and transcripts to me and I will sign you up for the class of interest. Fill out an application online if you have not already enrolled at our college. See application site below: http://www.randolph .edu/admissions/ apply_now. php
If you download a paper application you may send the application to me in the mail along with the Concurrent Enrollment Release Form and high school transcripts.
Give me a call if you have questions at 336-633-0310. I will be glad to mail the university college transfer courses or associate degree programs offered to your home. Please send me your name and address to get on our mailing list. The general information sites are listed below:

No More S.A.T. Exams!
Check out this Trend Setting decision by the high Ranking NC University - Wake Forest :
2 Colleges End Entrance Exam Requirement
By TAMAR LEWIN
Published: May 27, 2008
Smith College, a women’s college in Northampton, Mass., and Wake Forest
University in Winston-Salem, N.C., will no longer require prospective
students to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of their applications.
At both institutions, the policies will take effect with the class entering
in fall 2009.
The number of colleges and universities where such tests are now optional —
mostly small liberal-arts colleges — has been growing steadily as more
institutions have become concerned about the validity of standardized tests
in predicting academic success, and the degree to which test performance
correlates with household income, parental education and race.
Some schools that have made standardized tests optional have found that they
have attracted a more diverse student body, with no decline in academic
ability.
“By making the SAT and ACT optional, we hope to broaden the applicant pool
and increase access at Wake Forest for groups of students who are currently
underrepresented at selective universities,” said Martha Allman, Wake
Forest’s director of admissions. Wake Forest will announce its change on
Tuesday; Smith announced it on May 16.
While students will still have the option of submitting standardized test
scores — and in fact, the majority of applicants still do so at many
test-optional colleges — the most important criteria for admission will be
high school curriculum and classroom performance, writing ability,
extracurricular activities and evidence of character and talent.
Wake Forest, with 4,500 undergraduates, is ranked 30th among national
universities by U.S. News & World Report, and is the highest-ranked on that
list to have dropped its testing requirements. Smith, the nation’s largest
undergraduate women’s college, with 2,600 students, received 3,771
applications this year, the most in its 137-year history.
Generally, only small colleges and universities with the resources to pay
attention to recommendations, essays and extracurricular activities, as well
as to a student’s grades and test scores, have been able to eliminate their
testing requirements.
But some state universities, too, now admit most of their freshman class
without regard to standardized test scores.
At the University of Texas, for example, most students are admitted under a state policy guaranteeing admissions for those in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
