Sep. 24, 2006 - Obstacles
DH has been working on Saturdays for the last few weekends, and not getting home till around 8 p.m. each night. When it gets like this and the kids haven't seen him much, we usually try and go visit him at work. This Saturday was perfect because they were at the obstacle course. The kids had a lot of fun seeing the soldier do all the climbing and rope sliding. Grace was saying she wants to join the army (oh boy, mixed feeling for me there! That's a whole 'nother post altogether) and she wanted to try all the obstacles. Alex had fun watching, but when they jumped into the mud for the low crawl under barbed wire, he was not impressed. He'll get dirty, but he wants to have a purpose to it, not just to get dirty. He'll get all kinds of dirty catching a fish, for example.
I always had fun on the obstacle course when I was in the army. I don't like heights, but they always have enough safety equipment that I knew I probably wouldn't die. Several of the soldiers had a hard time climbing up to the big platform way up high to do the rope slide. Even a big, tough guy was just frozen for a while.
It's interesting what terrifies one person doesn't even worry another. Fear is a funny thing. I never wanted to jump from planes but I talked to lots of airborne guys who said they were scared of explosives. I used to go home and find plastic explosive bits in my pockets. We tossed around old landmines and wore detonation cord around our necks to carry it.
I kept wishing I'd brought my camera and it wasn't till they were all done that I remembered I have a camera on my phone. Afterwards we had lunch with DH and two of his co-workers. It reminded me that it's been a long time since I was in the army. DH worked till late that night, but it was nice to carve out a little family time at the end of a busy week.

Bits of explosives in your pockets? Ummm...yeah...I hate it when that happens...yeah...
And obstacle course sounds like fun! I like mud, climbing, jumping, and all such of ridiculous movements... I'm sure I stink at the climbing part though. I hate to admit it, but I have never in my entire life been able to do even ONE pullup/chinup! *sigh*
Glad you could spend time with your dh-- even if for just a little while! Those little bits of time really do add up over the years!
Love,
Marsha
