Sep. 11, 2006 - Kids scripture memorization
I thought of a way to make scripture memorization eaiser for my daughter and for myself, so I'd thought I would share it with you all :)
Here's what I did. I took the verse to be memorized, and wrote it on a lined 4x6 index card, in fairly large print to make it easier for my daughter to read. Then on blank 4x6 cards I wrote 1, 2, or 3 words (depending on the length and difficuly of each word) from the verse on each card in large letters. So each card was similar to this.
Psalm 9:1
I will give
thanks to the
Lord with
my whole heart;
I will tell
of all thy
won der ful
deeds.
Then I arranged them, in order, so that when you flip through the cards the verse will be read in sequence. I put the verse written on the lined index card in front, as a reference.
I then punched holes along the top edge, and placed rings through the holes so the cards could be flipped easily and be kept in sequence.
Its much eaiser now for my 6 year old (and for me) to memorize scriptures. I can sit on the couch with her and have her flip through the cards and read the words, and help her sound out any words she has some trouble with. After we've flipped through the cards a few times together I'll get up and let her continue reading the cards on her own. She can sit at the table, on the couch, at her desk, etc... while I make lunch and I can still be close enough if she needs any help. She can continue flipping through and reading the cards on her own.
Doing this she also can practice reading and sounding out words on her own with out getting distracted by bright colored pictures in begining reader books.
By the time I finish fixing lunch, she has had enough repitition with the verse that if I ask her what the verse was during lunch she can say it with little help and without looking at the cards.
To make it a little more fun, and to have something useful to have to do during spare time, I can take the rings off the cards. I can then shuffle them and have her put them back in sequence , or arrange them in order on the floor or table. She can use the verse on the lined card as a reference if she needs to.
I store the memory verses in 4x6 picture pocket pages. I have the type made by "Ultra Pro" that have 3 pockets to hold 4x6 pictures and is 3 hole punched to store in a binder. But any pocket picture album from a variety store or Wal-mart will do, or simply use a card file box.
Storing them in the pockets help to keep the cards together so I can take the rings off of one verse set and use them for another memory verse set.
For the rings, I used crochet/knitting stitch markers. These particular ones are made by Boye, and come in a blue box, and I found them in the craft department at Wal-mart close to the yarn. The rings fasten so you can open and close them multiple times. But if you don't want to get very fancy, just tie your cards together with some yarn, ribbon, or string threaded through the holes.
I will keep the verses stored, and pull one or two out at a time for her to "refresh" her memory. You could also take a set along in the car for review in the back seat while you are driving.
I hope this helps some one! If not.. then at least I have it documented here for me to share it later with a friend!!
You all have a blessed and prosperous day! Angela

Sep. 11, 2006 - A letter to a friend...
I reiceved an email from a friend recently who was struggling in her home schooling. I thought there might be other moms who feel the same way as her, so I am posting this reply hoping it will help or encourage you too...
I've changed names to protect the innocent. I haven't corrected the spelling mistakes to protect me though... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friend
It took me a while to reply to this because I wanted to be sure my works
were seasoned, and not to blunt and frank. I know as friends we want to
be upfront, and truthful with each other. But I know I have a tendancy
to be too much negatively truthful and it usually hurts others I speak
to instead of encourage and exhort others like I'm supposed to do.
First off, let me start by saying I really value your friendship. Even
though we don't get to spend a lot of time together, but the time we
have had on the phone and together in person, I have always come away
encouraged by something you have said. Especially when I was going
through our ordeal with DHS, you were always faithful and such an
encouragement.
I read what you have written, and have heard what you have said
recently, and I hurt along with you. I know things are bad for you and
your family, and you see no way out with your natural eyes or
understanding. Dan, from what I feel after speaking to you, probably
doesn't really enjoy what he's doing, but is doing it because it's the
only way he sees he can provide for his family. He feels trapped, and
you feel trapped to.
Even though things have gotten better financially for us, we still have
a long ways to go, and things are still extremely tight for us and we
too go through weeks not knowing how we'll put enough gas in the car for
Jerimiah to get to work. We too see things we want to do, but yet we
can not budget it into our finances because we are still paying for
mistakes and stupid decisions we made in the past. Our finances are
completely handled by faith, which I believe is where God wants us.
Even though I have not been in your specific situation, I have been
where you are and I still am in some aspects.
This is what I understand of you and your situation based on things that
have happened in the past and things you have written me or have said.......
You feel like you are a failure because you have had little, if any
support from your husband, from his family and from your family regarding choices
you have made for your family. Because you have little support in
regards to homeschooling, you feel you have to do it all by yourself in
your own strength. Living under their judgment and condemnation for so
long, you have started to shape your perception based on what they and
others think and say about you. You have started to judge and condemn
yourself. Because you feel like you don't live up to your own
standards, you try harder in your own strength, and again don't meet
those standards so you start again in another cycle of self judgment and
condemnation. You probably still pray, read the bible, see God's
promises for you, and maybe even confess those promises for you... But
because you feel you are under so much judgment and condemnation, you
don't truly believe those promises are for you, and that you truly can
never claim them.
Your boys being behind does not make you a failure. You are not a
failure. You have not quit, and you have not given up. As long as you
don't quit or give up you will never fail. By what standard have you
failed? The public school system? By their own standards they have
failed as well, since outcome based education has been instated as a
standard in our community.
The only way you will fail is if you keep continuing to school with your
own strength, your own rigrious effort, your own standards, and your own
understanding. The only way we will succeed as mothers, wives, and
homeschool moms is if we submit to and allow our selves to be led by the
Helper who has been sent for us, the Holy Spirit. But we cut ourselves
off from His leading when we continue to live in self condemnation and
see ourselves as others see us. Living by the Holy Spirit it truly an
act of faith. Living by the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit
means that we must trust Him, and trust our husband's abilities, and
trust our children's abilities. Jesus knew that we would need guidance
and direction in every area of your life, including homeschooling, that
is why He did send the Holy Spirit. He is there and made available to
us for us to come to him in every need and with every concern and ask
for wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.
Living by the leading of the Holy Spirit in every area of your life
brings freedom, and the ability to enjoy life. Living by the Holy
Spirit means beings empowered by the Holy Spirit.
You do not enjoy your life right now, because you have allowed that
enjoyment to be stolen from you. You live your life according to what
the law says, and what the law requires. Living by the law only sucks
the life out of you, and brings death and misery. We, in our own
strength can never fulfill the requirements of the law.
You know what John 10:10 says. Jesus came that we might have an
abundant life, full of life, have a life that is so full it overflows.
And I believe that also includes in our home schools. Home Schooling is
part of life.
The Holy Spirit knows exactly what your boys need, and when they need
it. Yes, there are things that, by state law, and for them to succeed
in our world our children need to have knowledge of and understand. But
God knows what those things are. Our job as mother-teachers is to give
our children the concrete tools they need so they can learn and help
them develop a relationship with their true Father, God in heaven.
God has given them the abilities to succeed in life, and He knows what
those abilities are. And He wants to be the one to lead you as you
teach and instruct your children according to the abilities they have at
the point of life they are at.
You say "it hurts to think that that's how I started out, not chained
down by the hassles of what is required, but simply wanting to help my
kids enjoy learning. " It hurts, because it was probably your God given
dream and vision. But because you live under so much judgment and
condemnation from others and yourself, you fear that you will never live
that dream. You can live that dream! You think you are behind?? God
can and will meet you exactly where you are and wants to lead you to
where You are more than a conquerer in Christ Jesus!!!
You also said "It's nice to keep the kids sheltered from the real
ugliness of school and society, and honestly, that's always been my
biggest goal. Keeping them home and getting a crummy education (but the
best I could do on the time and money we have available to us), I
thought, was better than a crummy education and a lot of nasty habits
and bad attitudes and low self-esteem that they would have picked up in
public schools."
We were never instructed to shelter our kids from the world. Yes... we
are to insulate them, and build them up and teach them who they are in
Christ so they can go into the crummy world and dominate and subdue it.
But are we really keeping them from a crummy education and a lot of
nasty habits and bad attitudes and low self esteem if that is what we as
mothers are living at home? If you don't enjoy schooling your children
then why would you expect your children to have a good attitude about
school and love learning? If you feel like you are a failure, and keep
self condemning your self, can you really example a godly self esteem,
and can you really enjoy schooling your children?
"I have to get real, and have been trying to, to make sure I don't ruin
them with a bunch of sweet, fluffy ideas that make everyone feel warm
and fuzzy inside, but that don't stand up to even the cruddy public
school educations."
No we are not to fill our kids with sweet and fluffy ideas. That is
what is wrong with the world. We are to center our kids on the Word of
God, and teach them the principles based on God's word. And live our
lives according to His word, and live life and use examples from life to
teach our kids each day. And yes, we are to "get real".... but unless
our reality is based on God's word and what the Holy Spirit is telling
us, then our reality will only be a finalized perception of what the
world and those around us are telling us. Our reality is this, yes we
are in the situations we are in. But we also have God's promises and
God's provision as our source. God's power and authority supersedes
what we see and what we feel. This is where we are now, but we do not
have to stay where we are now, and it does not have to be like this in
the future.
"Anything she says will probably be very enlightening and encouraging
and uplifting, but since I know from experience that those methods just
don't work (or at least didn't for me and my kids), hearing more of it
would just be condemnation for me. I'd hesitate to even read her book
for the same reason."
Nothing I say or she says is meant to condemn or discourage you. But
you take it that way because you feel like you are failing and you
condemn yourself. No, maybe her exact method will work for you. But
can you take some of the ideas she has and see if they will fit your
life? Let me read to you an execerpt of a book I've been reading (Teaching Children as the Holy Spirit Leads by K.J. Allison)
"......When a method is proven to work, people want to mass produce it,
and sell it "in cans" But many methods that are successful with their
authors fall apart when other teachers try to copy them. Why? Because
success depends not upon the method, but upon the teacher. A good
teacher is something like an artist. Her work must by fresh and
original to be really good. A warmed-over method doesn't have the
needed spontanaeity. It must be an intensely personal approach capable
of meeting the needs of particular children in a particular setting.
Furthermore, the teacher must feel comfortable with it.
" Does this mean good teachers just grope around until they hit on
success? Some do just that; but the Spirit-Led teacher can go directly
to God for help in analyzing the problem, defining the goals, and
working out a solution. To know whether you are a successful teacher,
you need to know the instructional goals you plan to attain. The
Christian teacher must dig into the Scriptures to determine what
teaching goals and methods are in harmony with God's goals. A method
may be successful in the eyes of the world, but if it's based on values
that poison a student's mind it can hardly be called successful by
Christian standards.
"Part of the secret in being a good teacher is tapping one's own
God-given creativity. What keeps most teachers from finding their own
personal approach is fear-fear of failure, ......fear of not using the
provided materials in the prescribed way."
"....Not that these materials should not be used. The problem is that
most teachers do not realize what the materials can and cannot do, so
they don't understand how to use them most effectively. Materials are
tools; they are not teachers......."
The lady I invited you to go see simply has a method that she came up
with through her own God given creativity, and works for her, as a
single mom homeshcooling 8 children and working part time. She takes
off from her part time job to go about the country to encourage other
moms and to share her method. Nothing she says or writes is meant to
condemn you or make you feel like a failure.
Do I expect her method to be the perfect fit for me? No. But I do
expect to glean ideas from her that I can incorporate into my home and
our home school. I expect to get ideas that will help to spark my own
creativity to homeschool with a fresh, applicable, and Spirit-Led
approach that works for us.
I've gotten rather lengthy. I hope you don't think I am preaching at
you. I am just sharing with you what I have learned and am still
learning after all may years of being a stubborn wife and mother. I
refuse to live my life doing things the same way with the same attitude,
and expecting different results. That is insanity. If I have to be in
an atmosphere of rules and strict regulations, and life-less methods to
school my children then I do not want to do it.
I hope you find encouragement in what I have written to you as a friend
seeking to exhort you and build you up.

Aug. 27, 2006 - I haven't dissapeared!
You all wonder if I fell off the face of the earth? Well... i sort of did... the internet earth. the past weeks have kept us hopping and so busy that I have had little time to do anything online except check my email.
The last week of July, we worked at becoming more consistent with doing school work every day and preparing for our family vacation to Colorado.
I also made an effort at doing more detailed cleaning so we would come home to a nice and uncluttered home (at least it would be that way untill we unload the car).
Amid all the last minute plans, preparations, and cleaning, we were given a piano. Our "new" piano is an old upright that comes about as big and heavy as they come. We were lucky in unloading it because the tail gate of our truck is the same height as our back door, so we unloaded it into the kitchen. To fit it into the liivng room, I would have to comepletely re-arrange the furniture, and I didn't feel like doing that so we let it sit there unitl after we got back from vacation.
The first week of August, we left for Colorado to visit my hubby's family. We spent 2 wonderful nights at his grandparents cabin near Gunnison with all of his dad's family, then drove from there Nucla, CO to spend a night with his parents before driving home.
It's close to bedtime, so I will continue tomarrow and catch you all up on our life!
God Bless for now!

Jul. 21, 2006 - Our School day Today....
Today started out pretty smoothly. Little Joelle slept in for me (actually she woke up, but daddy was nice enough to go get her and put her in bed with me adn she fell back asleep). Since she was sleeping longer than usual, I was able to shower and get dressed without any interruptions or rushing to finish before little fingers get into too much mischeif
Jordan had woken up by the time I got out of the shower, and we then started our morning chores. While Jordan did her chores, I focused on cleaning up the kitchen and hand washing the remaining dishes from last night. After her morning routine, Jordan helped to make breakfast (scrambled eggs).
After the girls ate breakfast (I had a keifer smoothie for my breakfast), I had Jordan clear the table and then help me clean the bathroom. She sprayed down the sink and counter tops, and wiped them down as I scrubbed the toilette and bathtub.
I'm wanting her to start learning new skills and cleaning duties by having her work beside me and clean an area of the room I am cleaning for the day. Since my home and my rooms are fairly small, I think I can concentrate on cleaning one room a morning, and get it accomplished fairly quickly. And having her be responsible for one thing to clean or one area to clean in the same room I'm in, it will make it easier for me to show her how to clean it and for me to be near her to help her or make sure she's doing it correctly.
As she learns a new skill or cleaning duty, and does it proficiently, then we will add it to her "commissioned chores" chart. The "commissioned chores" will allow her to earn some money or treats by doings things above her normal chores.
We finished chores by 10:30, and then started into schoolwork.
We started with the "Pledge of Allegiance" and then had "calendar time", identifying todays date, yesterday's day and date, and tomarrow's day and date.
Then we had "bible time" and reviewed what we have learned so far about creation: Genesis means beginning, God made the sun to rule the day, and the moon to rule the night, etc.
Next came reading/writing. I read aloud several poems from "Poems and Prayers for the very Young" about the sun, moon, stars, and God's Creation.
We then reviewed phonetics "g", "s", "qu", and "b", and Jordan practiced writing the letters. Joelle had to be like big sister. She sat at her little table, and I tried to give her paper and crayons, but she would not be happy until I gave her a pencil too!
Jordan practicing penmanship
"See mommy, I'm learning too".
I tried to incorporate a little of the arithmatic in luchtme. For lunch, we made sandwiches, and we practices top, middle, and bottom. Bread was on the bottom, tuna was in the middle, and bread was on the top. Jordan also later demonstrated "top, middle, bottom" with her blocks. 3 red blocks were on the bottom, 3 yellow in the middle, and 3 green on top.
We also practices counting to 100. Jordan had no trouble counting by 10's, but she still struggled a little bit with counting by 5's and by 2's.
We continued the theme about the sun, moon, and stars for "God's World" (Science(. I read aloud from Childcraft Copywrite 1954, Vol 9, pgs 144-148. We read about the stars, what they were, and about constellations. We also discussed how God put the moon and stars for signs and seasons. And also why stars looked so small, even if they were bigger than our sun.
We then closed our books for the day, and had naptime.

Jul. 19, 2006 - Little Hands, little helpers
Jul. 18, 2006 - Homeschooling is underway!
Well, it finally happened. We were able to sit down and have a lesson. We'll it really wasn't a lesson. Today was more of a "review" on JOrdan's part so I could get an idea of what she knows well and what she doesn't.
Today we tackled Week one, Day 2 in LAH-Kindergarden by Ann Ward. We started with the Pledge of Allegience, then "calendar time". Jordan had some trouble remembering the days of the weeks. But she identified the date on the calendar fairly easily, and was able to tell me what the date tomarrow will be and the date yesterday was.
Then we did "bible time", and she colored pictures of the sun, moon, and stars while I read to her from the book of Genesis about days 1,2, and 4. She easily answered questions regarding what the light was called (day) and the darkness was called (night), etc.
Then we reviewed the phonetics "a", "d", and "c" and practised handwriting the letters. She does have very pretty writing as long as she remains focused and pays attention to her work.
I could tell she was getting restless from staying in the chair for so long, so we took a break while I worked on folding laundry and made dinner, and she went into her room to listen to books on tape.
After dinner we finished up "schoolwork", and reviewed colors and sorted items by color. She had no problem with naming all of the colors, but didn't know the primary colors or why they were known as primary colors. Then we finished up by counting to 100, counting to 100 by 5's, by 2's, and by 10's. She had no problem counting by 10, and a little trouble counting by 5's, but really struggled with counting by 2's. It took her a while to figure out that 12 comes after 10 and 14 comes after 12. But after we worked through it she was just fine, and counted by 2's again with very little trouble.
We then closed the book until tomarrow and Daddy took the girls outside to play, since the sun has gone down and it's not so hot. (It may be below 100 by now).
The rest of the day really did not go as planned.
Since we had company over for dinner, and they stayed rather late last night, I woke up extremely tired and dragging when hubby's alarm clock went off. With then getting to bed so late last night I expected them to sleep in, but they woke up as hubby was leaving for work.
Since the girls were up, I decided to go ahead and go to the store for weekly groceries before it got to hot to be driving in an old truck without an air conditioner. We were ready and out the door by 8:00, and got home sometime around 10:30. Jordan and I unloaded the truck and I put away the perishables, then made lunch. After lunch I put the girls down for a nap, or rather they were dragging me into their room so they could take a nap, and then straightened up the house and get things ready to go to Melissa's for a "craft party.".
But we didn't make it to Melissa's. Jordan woke up saying her stomach was hurting, and I didn't want to take chances with her giving any of the other kids anything, so I cancelled.
And because we didn't go to Mel's we were able to get our schooling in before dinner time.
I'm anxious to see what tomarrow will bring and what we will get accomplished.

Jul. 12, 2006 - Been a long time..... am I procrastinating too much???
Well.. it's hard to believe, but it's already the middle of July. And I still haven't been consistent in home schooling. I had set my target date to start home schooling the first week of June, but that got pushed back because I did not have all the materials I wanted to start with. Our church had several events in June that we participated in as well, so that prolonged things as well. Then I didn't want to start the first week of July due to it being Independance day Holiday.
I believe another big part of it is that I am still working weekends, and late into the night, and then church takes up most of the day Sundays. By the time Monday comes, I feel all of my strength is just zapped, and it seems to take the rest of the week to catch up on my rest before I go back to work on Thurdsay. I've been really lax about our daily routine during the week, and even more lax about fitting schooling in during the day.
Monday evening, my hubby and I had a pretty good "heart to heart" about it. He likes the idea of us homeschooling our daughter, but if she's to be homeschooled we need to start now. We've decided that homeschooling needs to take a higher priority, even if it means me backing off on my housework. Which I hate to even think about. I'm not the biggest neat freak, but it still bothers me when our small home becomes cluttered or dirty. I wonder if a lot of it has to do with me trying to be a perfect mom and home-maker? So from now on, my housework will be limited to the basic mornign housework, the girl's chores, and if more needs to be done hubby will help do it after he gets home from work or it will go undone.
So for the past 3 days I've been efforting to organize and make out lesson plans and gathering what I'll need for schooling the next few weeks.
My daughter has completed Kindergarten in public school. But I've decided to go through kindergarten again. The cirriculum I'm using ( Learning at Home by Ann Ward) seems to be more advanced at the beginning of first grade than my daughter was at the end of Public School Kindergarten.
Learning at home is written for a 4 day a week school week. I plan on "schooling" Monday-Friday, and have hubby take her on field trips on Saturdays when I am working. With us schooling 5 days a week, we should get through the Kindergarten cirriculum sooner, and probably start 1st grade some time early next year.
Hubby will also be taking care of Phys Ed. He is a Physical Therapist Assistant, so probably more qualified for Phys ed than a couch potatoe, bon-bon eating housewife... ;)
Well.... the sun's gone down and it's cooling of a little outside now, so Its time to take the kids outside for a while.

May. 22, 2006 - Our weekend.
This past weekend has been a very busy weekend.
Saturday we went to the dairy in Claremore to pick up milk for the milk co-op. We went later in the afternoon, so the cows were not beings milked for the evening yet, so we didn't get to witness that. It's always neat to watch, and it fascinates Jordan so much.
After we picked up the milk, we delivered it to the other co-op members, and stopped at a yard sale on the way home. I found two books on house keeping and cleaning. I'm always reading up for better ways to keep a house organized and clean. My problem is currently, that I am usually too tired after working all weekend to effectivly keep the house de-cluttered. But one day it will be!!!!
Yesterday (Sunday) was our baby's 2nd birthday. We went to church, and came home and camped out on the couch as a family and watched a movie. Then we met my sister and her family at the park, then we all went back to their home for BBQing and water play. It was a long, but very relaxing evening.
Well... that's all for now. It's bath time, then off to bed!

May. 18, 2006 - Getting used to being home all day!
Well, Jordan has graduated from public school Kindergarten!! She's now home all day, and although it is a big adjustment for all of us, I'm really enjoying having her home all day and getting to spend all day with her. Yesterday we didn't get much accomplished because I just wanted to relax and focus on having some fun. But today we got more chores accomplished, and we played with/made a big mess with playdough.

Now it's nap time. Then it'll be time for me to get ready for work. I'll be so glad when I am no longer working weekends and can devote my whole time to family, church, and home.
I'm off to fold laundry!

May. 15, 2006 - Under Construction
Well.. here I go. I've never blogged in my life, but here's my attempt. I'll be posting and reconstructing little by little as I catch up on my house work, re-assign things places as I recoverfrom a yard sale, and try to get orgainzed for home school.
But I'll give you a quick intro first.
My name is Angela. I'm married to a wonderful hubby, and have two beautiful (most of the time) tomboy daughters. Jordan is 6 and Joelle is 2. Jordan is currently in public school Kindergarten, but is graduating this week and will soon be home all day with us.
I work part time, weekends, as a waitress. We are serious about obliterating our debt, and my current job allows me to help contribute some income but not have to put our girls in daycare.
We are also very active in our church, so our schedules keeps us very busy. But once a few more of our debts are paid off i'll be home full time!
My focus this summer is to have fun and spend time with my girls, work on manners and good charachter traits (for me as well), and gather things we need for Homeschool.
Well that's a brief intro..... Have a blessed day!
