Kids in The Forest Program - Department of Natural Resources

Where: woods of Beaver Bank (Sackville area)
Who?: Homeschoolers Grades 4-8
Register: by April 20th, email audreyrbarrett@eastlink.ca to register and for more information
Every spring, the Department of Natural Resources puts on a program called "Kids in the Forest". Bus loads of children come to spend the whole day in the woods of Beaver Bank (Sackville area), where learning stations are set up to talk about things like conservation enforcement, wildlife adaptation, forest harvesting and regeneration, aquatic life in brooks and streams, fire fighting (with the wild fire suppression truck and helicopter on site - always a big hit with the children!), water quality/wetlands, rocks and minerals, insects,.............. - it's a pretty full day! The folks who come to manage the learning stations are all professionals in their various fields, and the comments received from participating children and their teachers have been very positive.
I almost missed this completely this year! As I write this, I'm listening to a talk by Joan Ward of the Positive Image Network about Play. The annual "Say What You Mean Convention", a free convention online, is on now through February, 6th. Just for registering at Say What You Mean Convention you will receive a whole slew of freebies to download, some of which I have recently reviewed, such as offerings from Write Shop, Motherboard Books, and Media Angels! All day long you can listen to terrific podcasts, and you can even access the podcasts you've missed :) And great prizes are given out daily - all you have to do is register to get a chance to win! Enjoy!

Homeschool sessions at the Halifax Art Gallery have been running monthly on Thursdays from 10:30am - noon. This time has included touring the gallery exhibits as well as time in the studio doing hands-on art activities. The program is expanding to two morning per month beginning in March. Each group of children will attend one day per month in March, April, May and June, and the total cost per child will be $28.00, payable at the first session in March. No dates have yet been set, but more will be known in mid-January. Family groups will all attend on the same day, but the children will be divided into age groups at the gallery so that the programming will be age-appropriate. The programming is for children between the ages of 5 and 13.
If you are interested, please email audreyrbarrett@eastlink.ca and include:
your name
your phone number (in case of computer problems or last minute changes on gallery days)
your email address
your child(ren)'s name(s) and age(s) (so the gallery can plan suitable programming)
if you will be carpooling with another family and therefore need to come on the same day
