Oct. 7, 2005 - QUESTION ABOUT APPROACH
Lately I seem to be more full of questions than wisdom and this conundrum is a doozie. My question is difficult to explain through words but, I'll give it a try in hopes that I can hear your wisdom.
Thing One would like to move onto more complex math. Before he can do that I feel like he needs to learn the basics. So, I have tried implementing acceleration. We have been skipping portions of lessons for less repetition of the material. With the idea of acceleration you skip around and complete the more complex practice then do a pre-test. If they score over an 87% then you have a confident score that they understand the material and can move on to the next concept/lessons. Here is the problem.
Once he gets to the pre-test he doesn't understand some of the instructions; but he can to the math. I tend to agree with him that the instructions are vague and rather specific only to this particular math curriculum, which btw is Horizons. I feel that learning to follow directions and understand written instructions is important; but, I'm wondering if this curriculum is only teaching their instructions. In other words, if it were a different curriculum it might have different instructions.
I've always used the school rule that I will help with the directions on a test but, not the math. I suppose I'm second guessing this in trying to use the acceleration method. Here is my set of questions:
-
Which is more important? That he learns the math concepts or that he learn to follow the directions within the curriculum?
-
Do you think there would be a danger of letting him learn the basics while performing higher level math instead of going through the traditional steps?
-
Fourth Grade Horizons spent a great deal of its lessons on estimation; a difficult concept for a literal thinker. It has taught him to estimate to the nearest dollar, nearest tens, hundreds, and thousands. I question some of their answers. For instance; when we estimate in real life we usually round to the nearest dollar, ten, or maybe even a number ending with a five. One of the answers had him round to $339.00. In practical application wouldn't we just say, $340.00? How detailed is the curriculum you are using when it comes to estimation? Have you experienced anything similar?
I suppose I am rather anxious about this because I don't want him to become bored in math; and, I don't want him to lose his enthusiasm and wonder for higher math. I fear if we spend too much time on the basics then I might lose that window of opportunity. Does this make any sense? What thoughts do you have to share regarding math?

Oct. 5, 2005 - CHESS CLUB?
I'm searching for a Children's Chess Club in or around the Tulsa area. All the ones I have found thus far are held in the public and private schools (after school hours) and are more classes than club/tournament style. Does anyone have any information that might lead us in the right direction?
