Aug. 29, 2008 VolunTEEN Final Project

I wasn't able to make it to the VolunTEEN ceremony on the 24th of August to present my final project. So my VolunTEEN director said that I could show her my finished projected by posting pictures of it on my blog. So here it is.
I have four stations: (1) Animals that I have learned about (2) My Stations (3) Conservation (4) My favorite Experience

The first animal that I wrote about, in my first section, was the New Zealand Fur Seal. Next to each of the animals that I put what Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species they are in. And I wrote a brief description about the animal in the picture.
(I'm pretty sure that the paragraph I wrote is clear enough to read in this picture- if its not just tell me and I will try to fix it).

The second animal that I wrote about was the Amazon River Dolphin, also called the Pink Dolphin. (Again, tell me if the paragraph is to blurry to read or not).

Here is my favorite experience of all while I was a VolunTEEN at the aquarium.
This is a picture of me feeding Charlie the otter!! And then I wrote about my what I fed
him and what it was like underneath the picture.

I did so much over the summer as VolunTEEN that I wasn't able to put a picture and a description
about each one of my stations that I worked at so I just chose two.

For my conservation section of my poster board I chose to write on the subject of plastic bags and how bad they are for the environment.

Here a couple close ups so that you can read what I wrote.

So how did you like it?

Aug. 12, 2008 VolunTEEN Summer Update

My VolunTEEN program is almost over. I only have a few more weeks that I have to work there, and I am going to miss my job. I have to have my poster board done by the 24th of August and do a presentation for family and friends who come to the aquarium on that day. Here are some of the pictures of me that my VolunTEEN mentors took of me during the summer.
On Saturday we (Volunteens) got the opportunity to feed one of the otters at the aquarium. This is me and Charlie!

Feeding him was one of the coolest things I have ever done in my life!! I have always heard that otters are extremely nasty, but Charlie was adorable and not the least bit nasty! Every time he would finish one of the pieces of food that I would give him he would wait patiently for the next piece with his mouth open.
I was even able to pet his tiny wet nose!

This picture was taken at Shark Lagoon (where there are two big touch tanks where the guest get to touch sharks, manta rays, and horse shoe crabs) while I was on "Shark Interpretation". Which means my job was to walk around and make sure that the guests touch the animals with two fingers and answer any questions that they have.

And this last one is me at the magnet board. This station is a place where the little kids get to come and colour a paper animal of there choice and then tape it up on the board behind me. Most of the kids put their animals in the correct habitats but some kids like to put whales and sharks up in the sky. LOL!
I'll write again after the 24th and I'll post some pictures of my finished poster board.

Jul. 16, 2008 Working at the Aquarium

It has been a week since I have started working at the aquarium and I have to say that I didn't realize how much I would enjoy my job there. Of course when I first saw the article about it on the aquarium website it did sound like something that would be enjoyable for someone like me with a love for the marine sciences. But I really, I had no idea what I was going to be doing. Before
I started the program we had three Saturdays of training in which I sat in a class room of about 20 other teens. There we stayed for 5 hours and learned all the basic information we needed to know about all the animals in the aquarium. Then on Monday the 7th I started out on my first day of work.
There are a few different stations around the aquarium that we as VolunTEENS are in charge of working at. One of them is a shark cart where we are allowed to choose which items (such as sharks jaws, shark teeth, charts of what different sharks eat... etc.) we want to put on display that the guests get to see and ask us questions about. Here's a picture of my at the shark cart.

One of the things that I always put out when I am there is a can of Shark Fin Soup. I put it out so that when people ask about it I can tell them the reason why I have it on display. By putting the can soup out I am trying to make an awareness to others about the cruelty that is happening towards sharks in oder to make this "gourmet meal" (as it is considered).
To make it the fishermen must go out and catch a shark, cut off all its fins and then throw it back in to the water (having no other use for the shark any longer). Without the fins, the shark has absolutely no way to balance and therefor spins and suffers a very slow and painful bloody death. It's a very sad thing, but if we don't tell the guest whats to stop them from going and buying some at the local grocery store, (as one of the fathers that came up to my shark cart suggested to his little 7 year old before I told him the grizzly details, which he wasn't at all happy about. He was actually mad at me and walked away with a nasty look on his face)and as a result contributing to the loss of the shark population. Surprisingly, I get the strangest questions from people for example, one guest asked me (after I given the explanation about the making of the soup) if the VolunTEENS all had to taste the soup before we started working at the aquarium.....
Another station we get to work at is called the Lorikeet Forest where guest have the opportunity to go into a caged area filled with Lorikeets and feed them nectar. Its funny how the birds recognize uniforms. Whenever they see any of the staff in blue shirts or the VolunTEENs with the green shirts they fly right over and land on us. And in my case there is a particular bird that loves to hang upside down on name tag necklace. Here is a picture of my brother holding one of the birds as it drinks nectar.

So there's a little bit of the scoop on what I have been doing. It has been so fun to teach people about the animals at the aquarium!
On another note. Lorenzo turned 1 yesterday on July 15th!!!  As a tradition in our family we bought him a mini chocolate cake for him to smoosh as a happy birthday present. Look how much he enjoyed it!
Here's the before picture...

And here's after!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE RENZO!!

Jun. 20, 2008 Aquarium of the Pacific

I am so excited!!! Last week I just got a phone call that said that I have been excepted by the aquarium of the Pacific to be a VolunTEEN! As a VolunTEEN I will be teaching the guests that come to the aquarium about the exhibits. I will also be showing them how to handle and interact with animals like sharks, mante rays, sea anemone, etc. while they are in the "touch pools".
Tomorrow will be my first day of training (I have to go for three training classes before I start working). Tomorrow will also most likely be the day that i receive my uniform and my name tag! I will take a picture of myself in my uniform and post the next time I write. Myself and the other volunteens are going to each have a journal that we write about our everyday experiences at the aquarium in. At the end of our eight weeks (the whole summer) we each have to use our journal entries to create a poster board about what we learned, what did, and how we benefited from the whole program.
I am working towards my doctorate degree as a Marine Biologist and that is why I wanted to be a volunteen at the aquarium. I know it will be an awesome learning experience and a wonderful chance to spend time with marine animals! I am going to take as many pictures as I can while I am at the aquarium tomorrow and post them as soon as possible!!
Also, my mom's birthday is on Sunday- so I wanted to make sure to post something special for her, so here it is!

LOL!

Apr. 17, 2008 Rare Sea Turtle

This is amazing! Today there was a news alert that showed the strangest looking turtle that I have ever seen! In Northern Vietnam it was thought that this "soft-shell turtle" was extinct in the wild. It is also known as the "legendary turtle". The legend says that in the 1400s the Chinese invading Vietnam were held back by a warrior king named Le Loi, who used a "heaven- sent sword" to do so. But when Le Loi was sailing in a boat on the "Hanoi" his sword was swallowed by a turtle and was never seen ever again. Also because of the legend the lake is commonly known as "Ho Han Kiem" which means the "Lake of the Returned Sword".
Here is a picture of the "Hoan Kiem turtle" coming up for air and making one of his very rare appearances in 1993.

And here is the turtle coming up for air just recently.

 Mar. 21, 2008 Horton Hears a Who

On Wednesday of the week I went to go see the latest kids movie with my family. A lot of people that I have heard opinions from really didn't like the movie and seem to start giving it a bad reputation over a comment about home schooling. Although I don't think that the comment was meant to offend home schoolers. So I wanted to make sure that I gave it a good report in my book. The movie is based on one of Dr. Sues' books called Horton Hears a Who, that has tons of great messages in it. It is about Horton (played by Jim Carry) the elephant taking a bath in his jungle pond. He begins to teach his class of animal children when he sees a tiny speck float past his face. Not only that but the little speck makes a tiny scream! Horton quickly catches the speck on a flower in order to protect whatever little being lives on it. Little does he know that there is an entire other world called Whoville on the speck.
In Whoville no one suspects that they are no bigger than a flower and that the earthquakes and odd weather changes that they experience are the result of being carried by a "giant elephant", except for the mayor. The mayor (played by Steve Carrel) of Whoville (who has 96 daughters and 1 son) makes contact with Horton and is terrified that he and his fellow citizens could be destroyed any moment. He tried to warn all the other Whos but no one will believe him.
Up in Horton's jungle the other animals are completely disturbed and think he is crazy for talking and caring for this speck. Especially the Queen Kangaroo (played by Carol Burnett) who threatens to banish him if he doesn't stop his foolishness and throw away the flower! But the "elephant is faithful 100%" and wont give up his quest to find a safe place to put the speck where it wont encounter any danger.
As for the comment about home schooling it was made by the Queen Kangaroo. She thinks of herself as the leader of all the animals and is extremely controlling. She says that she doesn't want her little joey to be receive bad influence from the other children and that is why she "pouch schools" him. Even though it might have seemed that the movie industry was making fun of home schooling- in the end the little joey became a very strong leader who did the right thing when no one else would. And that's what home schoolers want to be right?
I wont ruin the ending for you, just in case you want to see it for yourself. But some of the morals in the movie were: "A Persons a Person no matter how small" (in order to support pro-life instead of abortion), everyone counts and can make a difference, and even if you can't hear, see, or feel something that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist...(and many more). This movie is a great family that is very funny and entertaining!  I think everyone would enjoy seeing it!

 Feb. 23, 2008 Carmen's B-day

My little sister Carmen just turned 8 on Thursday! So I made her another one of my homemade three layer cakes. This year I made her a cake with a Little Mermaid theme. I wanted to take a pic of it before my brothers and sisters started eating it but I couldn't find my camera. The reason I wanted to get a picture of it was to post it on my blog. So since I couldn't find it I just gave up and said "Go ahead eat up." As you might guess, the next morning after the b-day party my mom says "I found the camera!"....,sigh.... I hate Murphy's law.... WHY DO THESE THINGS HAPPEN! ARGH!  Anyway, I took a pic of it on my phone and my dad said that he will try his best to figure out a way to get the it from my phone to the computer. So whenever that is accomplished I will post a picture of it. But if for some reason I can't post it I will just have to wait until (my little sister) Vivian turns three in March to show you my next cake. The theme of her's is going to be fairies in a patch of grass. Her choice. LOL! She loves stuff like that! So Happy Birthday to Carmen and Happy February 23rd to the rest of you.

 Jan. 16, 2008 New Puppies!

I admit that I am most certainly the biggest percrastinator on the homeschoolblogger.com, but at least I post once a decade right? Anyway, yes my blog is still under construction, I just haven't decided the theme and with all the classes I have been taking in addition to my home school stuff my schedule has been packed! Not only that but now instead of just one baby in the house there are THREE! My little brother Lorenzo and......*drum roll*...... our two new puppies! Phoebe (my puppy) and Zoey (my sister's)!!! They are both two month old border collie sisters! Phoebe is big fat and not very active (the perfect kind of dog for me) and Zoey is thin and way more hyper than her sister (the perfect dog for Carmen). All of us have a lot of work to be done- but personally I am loving it!

Phoebe and me.

Dec. 6, 2007 Christmas Time is Here!!

Hey everyone. Before I start writing my entry I want to point out the reason for something if you have noticed it on my blog. Sometimes the entries that I wrote a while back wih pictures in them are deleted after a few months and that is because for some reason there is a limit on the control panel of my blog that wont let me upload more than a few pics. So if I want to post another entry with pictures I have to delete the last one first. Anyway, Christmas time is finally here! One of my favorite times of the year! Recently I have been taking a lot of classes at a college near my grandma's house (and have beenbusy with homework and such) and little Lorenzo is almost five months old (and needs LOTS of attention!!). So with the combination of the two I really haven't had time to start having fun with the "christmasy" things that I love doing in December. But soon my classes will be over and Christmas brake is coming soon and that means that I can begin decorating, cooking, baking, putting up the tree, going to see Bob Baker's Marianets, Glory of Christmas, and making crafts with my siblings. And in my next entry I post Christmas pics of all of our activities. So how do bloggers like the new theme of my blog. Groovy....no? :) te he.... By the by I came upon a recipe that sounds awesome for the holidays! In fact I am baking it right now in the oven as I type! I am a huge fan of biscottis, I love baking them, (and no I will not accept the mispronounciation of the word: "Biscaaaty"! It is prounounced "Bi-sco-ty") and this recipe makes me salivate just by reading the title. Have a fun Christmas! (Ps. I didn't write this recipe).

Triple Chocolate Chip Biscottis

INGREDIENTS:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder
  • 2 tbs baking powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tbs vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate

PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 400F. Cream sugar and butter. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until smooth and add vanilla extract. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the egg mixture. Stir in chocolate chips. Shape the dough into 6 longs loaves and brush with beaten egg yolk. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Cut each loaf into 1 inch slices and place back on baking sheet. Reduce heat to 350F and place slices back into the oven. Bake for another 10 minutes, then remove from the oven and cool. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate, and drizzle over the biscotti.

 Nov. 3, 2007 Bunjy Boarding!

Lately my brother (gino) has been getting into skateboarding and a few days ago he got a new idea from one his skater dude friends, he calls it: Bunjy Boarding! He takes a skate board with out the wheels and does this:

Pretty origanal no? As a site note: Little new baby Lorenzo is doing fine and Vivian (the 2 year old) who used to be "the baby" is not reacting in jealousy over attention as I thought she would but is apsolutely loving having another baby in the house and continually asks "Angie, do you need some help wit da baby?" and always begs to hold him at every opportunity. Here they are:

And here is a picture of Lorenzo during "tummy time" on the carpet- learn how to scoot around and role over.

My grandpa Jim made up a nickname that everyone on my mom's side of the family calls him " Lo Ro". Sense his full name is Lorenzo Rosario ______. Of course I myself always prefer the nickname that my dad insists is a girl name but I love calling him because of all the stories that I have read where people with the name Lorence have this perticular nickname: Lori. So far out of all of the babies that I have taken care of in this famiy, Vivi and Lori are deffinately the most good natured. (For vivian her personality really does go with her name which means "full of joy"). I'll write again soon.

 Oct. 22, 2007 Fires Galore!

My sincer apologies for not posting as soon as I usually do. I really did mean to over the last several days but have been through a few tramatic events that have made my schedule a little ascew (sp?). About a week ago, there was a humongous truck pile up on the 5 freeway which I live right by. So that made it impossible to go and do a lot of things that needed to be done- such as going to my college classes that we have to take the freeway to get to. If that wasn't enough to make traffic worse now we have the fires going on in almost all the major locations in Southern California. There are 15 of them that I know of at the moment and a lot of them are REALLY close to my house! But not close enough that we have had to evacuate. A lot of my friends have though, and the sky is filled with smoke! It's not as bad as yesterday but it's almost hard to breath when I go outside. If I find out anything else important I'll post another entry.

Until then,

Angie

 Sep. 8, 2007 I'm back

Okay... I guess that didn't go well. Yes, as you might have read about in my last entry, I did try to switch to blogspot as my homepage (so to speak). But it didn't work out at all! I still have it up and running if any of you guys want to check it out but I found that blogspot just is not as.. hmm... how should I put it?... fun and social as homeschoolblogger. When I posted there was never any comments- either becuase nobody read my entries or because someone wanted post a comment but couldn't becuase it requires gmail account to do so. So I have officially started writing entries here again, and it's good to be back. I'll be happily starting up on my super commenter possition again!

So what have I missed while I was gone?

Jul. 15, 2007 Goodbye for now...

Sorry guys, I haven't really had anything important to blog about lately, and I don't like blogging when there isn't anything good to write. Yes I could have blogged about the poll results, but sadly there was only like one MAYBE two people that wrote their vote in there comments. So there goes that idea out the window. LOL! So here is my announcement: I have been getting some what frusterated with the homeschoolblogger settings and control panel that I have to deal with everytime I want to change the template or write an entry. I wont be posting anymore on this blog, but I will posting more on my new site that I have created on www.blogspot.com and I programed it so that all you homschoolblogger friends of mine can comment on it.

Please come and comment, I don't want to lose contact with all you guys on my friends list. That would be sad. Maybe you can even make your own blogspot! But regardless I promise that I will still come and comment on your sites, cause a lot of you guys have some really cool blogs.

So if you guys want to visite it here is the link: www.anauthorsnotebook.blogspot.com

I haven't written an entry on there yet, but I am working on one. Please come and visite me and comment lots!!

Until next time,

Jun. 19, 2007 No I didn't fall of the face of the blogesphere!

Hi everyone. Yes, I am still here on homeschoolblogger! I didn't Fall off the face of the blogesphere (I like that word). I have had some technical difficulties with my blog for a while, my mom said that she wanted me to block everyone except for logged in homeschoolblogger members from seeing my site, and some how when I did that, I accidently blocked myself from viewing my own site (don't ask me how I did that-becuase I haven't the slightest idea), and that's why I might not have been able to return all of your comments. I couldn't see any of your comments. LOL!

But during that time I was gone, I had lots of time to think of what to post and I....still couldn't figure out anything to post, right now I am writting and thinking at the same time. Okay, I have it. I want you guys to take a poll. (Inquizitive (sp?) minds in my family wanted to know this) If you guys comment (which I really hope you do, I like comments) Answer me this question and in two week time I will post an entry showing the results.

How do you spend the summer?

Choices:

1. We do school all summer, just like the school year

2.  I go to summer camp

3. We take the whole summer off

4. We have a combination of on and off weeks of school throughout the summer

See ya in a coupe weeks.

May. 21, 2007 The Days are Filled

A lot of things have been going on sinse the last time I posted. First of all about my eye, the doctor said that I was having an allergic reaction from something that fell in my eye and it's not swollen anymore. But Saturday my family and I had a really great time. We went to the BUG FAIR! It was so much fun!! At the muesuem that it is held at there are tons of things to do. The first thing we did was go over to the section where all the bug sellers had their booths set up. Gino (my bro), my Mom, and I are bug collectors and every a couple years ago we buy (dead) bug specimens to put in our collections. The first time we went to the bug fair my mom assigned all of us a Country to look for bugs from and I was assigned South America. So I collected butterflies and moths from places in South America. But this year we didn't want to have to bring all the boxes of collections with us so I brought mine and mom used it to put some of the bugs that she bought in it. This year my mom collected a hug moth from Arizona and a huge Rhinoceros Beetle! I would love to show you some pictures but this darn conotrol panel wont let me download anymore pics so....sorry. But anway, another thing that has happened sinse my last entry is this. Gino now has a problem with his fingers. Don't ask me why everyone is having so many health problems but that's life for you. So as I was saying, this morning he woke up and he showed mom that his fingers were purple and blue. As if they were bruised or something, but Gino (www.homeschoolblogger.com/ginoblog) says that he doesn't feel any difference or pain in his fingers at all. My mom thinks that the problem might be that blood is having a hard time cirulating to his fingers. So today we are going to the doctors AGAIN! (Sorry again for not being able to post any pictures).

To make up for the lake of pictures and interesting things in this entry here is a funw website that you guys can surf around on, you guys might already know about it but I just found it last month and I thought it was pretty fun for when your desperately bored:  http://kids.yahoo.com/

Sincerely,

And do you know how many people out of that 93 actually noticed that there was in fact a comment button??? 4!!! 4 PEOPLE! That is sad!! WAS IT SOMETHING I SAID THAT MAKES YOU PEOPLE NOT WANT TO COMMENT??? WHERE DID I GO WRONG??! Well, maybe now that you people relize that I know that you are being counted as a NONcommenter! you might think about commenting. Am I right? I said a I RIGHT? Here I'll make you a deal. I will comment on your site for however many times you comment on my site. Deal?? Anyway, on to something interesting:

This morning I woke uo with my eye completely swollen and red, and as you read this I can bearly open my left eye. My mom said that I have what is called "Conjunctivitous" (sp?) or otherwise known as "Pink Eye"!! Really I must say though, it's a much more onnoying sickness than anything. My eye feels like a five pund weight, is watering, and I can't do anything about it! I'm not supposed to rub it or touch it at all! I would show you a picture but I on't have one on hand right now and I have to get ready to go to the doctors where he is going to put drops in my eyes. But to give you a picture of how I look here's a quote from my brother Carlo and what he said about me this morning "OH MY GOSH! YOU LOOK LIKE THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME!" LOL! ROTFLOLSTC!

I'll write again soon. Sincereley,

 Apr. 29, 2007 Weird Template!

Hey Peoples! How do you guys like the new template?? It is sort of weird with the comment situation though, I must admit. In case you guys can't figure out how to leave me a comment now here is how: First you have to push the thing that says how many comments I have so far and it will look something like this at the top of my entry " 2 Comments" (or however many comments I have at the time). Click on that and then there will be a place that says "Add comment" that you can push.  Here is a new Tag that I have made up and even though a lot of you bloggers are very annoyed (or so I have heard) by tags you will have to read the tag to see if you are tagged or not. Here it is:

(1.) What is your middle name?

(2.) Do you like you first name? if you could change your name what would change it to?

(3.) What is your pets name? (If you don't have one) What would you name a pet if you had one?

(4.) What are your favorite books in the world?

(5.) What is your dream house?

(6.) Do you enjoy being the age that you are? (If not) What age would you preffer to be if you could go forward in time right now?

(7.) Do you have any siblings? (if so) Do you enjoy having siblings? How many kids do you want when you grow up?

(8.) Do you enjoy to cook? (If so) What is your favorite thing to cook?

(9.) What girl names do you like?

(10.) What boy names do you like?

(11.) What is your favorite colour? Give three adjectives "Why?".

(12.) Who are the bloggers that you are going to tag next?

Okay that was it! Now here are the people I am going to tag:

Coffeegirl, Yoshiyahu, BobaFett, Boomer, Bookfreak, Anonymousgirl, ginoblog, dragontongue, BibleMan, and NickNitro.

Comment and tell me whether or not you are going to do my tag or not so that I can come to your site and see your answers.

 Apr. 16, 2007 I love Lucy

Hi bloggers, sorry for not posting for so long. I have just been (and still am) so depressed that I haven't wanted to write. You see on Thursday my best dog friend in the world had two seziures. My dog Lucy was so weak that she wouldn't eat and everytime she tried to walk she would collapse and fall down. She was only eight years old so I new that she couldn't be dying from old age. So we waited a day to see if she would improve, and my dad and I fed her chicken soup with rice all day, but she wouldn't eat a bit. So on Saturday we took her into a free vet clinic where the vet and my mom vigured out what the problem was. A few weeks ago we had discovered that there were wild rats on the side or our house, so my dad put some poison on the wall near our house. About a week before Lucy had the seizures she had stayed out in the backyard all night (I tried to get her to come in but she refused), and my mom could hear her chasing the wild rats all night. But after that week was over we didn't hear any more rat chasing. So from all the signs that the vet and my mom found, they figured out that Lucy had eat a wild rat that had eaten some of the rat poison that we put out. The vet said that we should give her iron three times a day for 90 days. So we started the treatment, but it didn't do much. So my mom geussed that maybe if we got some potasium in her system that she might feel better. We looked around at all the local stores but we couldn' find any viteman K. We went to a vet (the free clinic was only open in the morning frm 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM so we had to go somewhere else) but they wouldn't sell us any meds without scheduling an EIGHT-FIVE DOLLAR appointment with the doctor! So there was nothing we could do in that case. When my dad and I got home from our search for potassium, Lucy was still weak and hadn't moved from the spot that she had been an hour ago. So the only thing that we could do was give her water and iron and try to have her eat food. The next morning was Sunday, and my dad said that I should go to church and that he would take care of Lucy while I was gone. Before I leftt for church I spent as much times as possible with Lucy. I said goodbye to her and went to church. But once I got back it was all over. She had died in my dad's arms while I was gone. Yes I know it's shocking since only two entries ago I told you about her chasing cat's up a tree, but it's true. I'm not sure if dog's go to heaven. I don't where they go, all I know is that God has a plan for everyone and everything, and I'm hoping that one day I'll see her again. Thank you to all my friends who prayed for her while she was sick.
