Dec. 9, 2008 - Rime to Read

If you are like me and have a beginner reader in your house or maybe just one that has to brush up on their reading skills then you should check out Rime to Read . The books are virtual, which means there is nothing to take up more room on our already overloaded bookshelves. You can print them too if you so choose.
The books are written by Sara Hines and Lynn Klaiman and illustrated by Shari Hookman Berger. The illustrations are very cute and in color. The words in the book are color coded which helps to show visual differences and similarites in words that the child is reading. There are 20 books with every four featuring a word or rime family.
What is a rime? A rime is a word that is similar visually (ex: rat, cat, sat) rather than auditorially (as in a rhyme, like son and fun).
Here are some features of Rime to Read:
- the cost for these are 4 books for $9.99 or you can purchase all 20 books for $44.99. This does sound expensive but once you see point number 2 it will make sense.
- these books are yours! For as long as the website exists, these are yours, no deadlines! This means if you have an infant who won't be reading for several more years, he can use it too.
- audio feature to help the child read the word. Highlighted words only.
- can be an alone activity. While working with another child your reading child could work on these after you log in.
- Easy to manuever website. The site is very straight forward and easy to get around.
So in conclusion, this is definitely a reading program that is worth it's price. With it being a virtual program, as with anything virtual, there can be bugs but the owners are very good in getting things fixed and up and running again without causing a major upset to the experience of their books or for education. I would recommend this if you'd like something that all your children can use and build on reading skills.
