I had the oppurtunity to review a brand new ebook written by Gena Suarez of The Old Schoolhouse magazine, normally I would be wary of an ebook that is written for children, but I was pleasantly suprised! The book is titled And Then Mama Said........It Takes Time to Learn to Read and is priced at $9.95 for 23 pages plus with your order you recieve a activity book that includes copywork, coloring pages, an alphabet maze, science sheets and more. Also you can specify if you'd like your copy autographed.
The book is geared towards new readers or those who are finding it difficult to read. As homeschoolers it seems everyone wants to try to prove wether we are good teachers simply because our children may not be reading on a normal school level, but this book lets a child know it's okay to take your time. Each child learns at different levels and different times and Splish's mom lets him know that.
The book has great colors that I think every child would like and enjoy as they read. You can feel Spish's disappointment when he doubts if he'll ever be able to read and feel his excitement as, well.....you'll just have to get the book if you want the ending - no spoilers here! The illustrations are well drawn and very cute, what child doesn't like animals? The children follow and obey their parents, no disobedience. At the end of the book there are vocabulary with simple definitions that are easy to understand. Explicity Biblical and Christian worldview and sublte hints of the benefits of homeschooling!
As an avid reader, and a mom who wants to instill the love of reading in her children, this is truly a great buy and would make a great gift for Christmas, birthday or just and added incentive to read.
