Mar. 2, 2009 - Math Tutor DVD's

I am not good in math.  I was given two Math Tutor DVD's to review for the TOS Crew, not to exciting, to this math illiterate person.  I must admit though I was pleasantly surprised.  In school I had many, many tutors up to and including my dad, for math.  I think things may have gone more smoothly and more peace in our house had we had these DVD's back then.  I was given the The Algebra 2 Tutor and The Basic Math Word Problem Tutor to review and was mightly impressed.

For the Word Problem Tutor disc I thought it would be confusing to have someone up front of me, reading a problem, working it out, so on and so forth.  Aside from the white board and Mr. Jason Gibson (the instructor and creator) wearing a white/gray tshirt, I was very impressed.  He begins by reassuring the student and talking about what will be covered on the DVD.  After that he begins going over the word problems, which instead of just reading them to you, are superimposed on the screen.  Very good for a visual learner.  He writes out everything and applies labels (the thing that used to drive me nuts, doesn't the teacher know how many pencils Bob had?)  but he actually makes it seem enjoyable!  I think it's because he likes math, so that extends over into the teaching DVD's.  This DVD costs $26.99 for 8 hours of math tutoring.  This is far less than hiring a tutor for that amount of time.

On the Word Problem Tutor Disc there is:

  • adding whole numbers
  • subtracting whole numbers
  • multiplying whole numbers
  • dividing whole numbers
  • adding decimals
  • subtracting decimals
  • multiplying decimals
  • dividing decimals
  • adding fractions
  • subtracting fractions
  • multiplying fractions
  • dividing fractions
  • percents, Part 1
  • percents Part 2
  • ratio and proportion

The other DVD Algebra 2, was also very well put together and Mr. Gibb's shirt also had added color.  Why do I mention color?  For me, I like color, it helps me to focus and while others may be distracted by lots of color and so these DVD's would be perfect for them.  This DVD amazingly had me understanding some algebraic problems that I never got before.  I may still not like math, but the DVD definitely helped with my knowledge of some math problems.  If your child is doing algebra and is having trouble and you aren't sure where to begin, I would suggest this DVD for him or her and you!  This DVD costs $26.99 and again is a great price for a 6 hour video tutoring course.

What is on the Algebra 2 Tutor?  Here is the list:

  • graphing equations
  • the slope of a line
  • writing equations of lines
  • graphing inequalities
  • solving systems of equations by graphing
  • solving systems of equations by sustitution
  • solving systems of equations by addition
  • solving systems of equations in three variables
  • simplifying radical expressions
  • add/subtract radical expressions
  • multiply/divide radical expressions
  • solving equations with radicals
  • fractional exponents
  • solving polynomial equations
  • the quadratic formula

Please take a look at these well-done, professional DVD's for your homeschool.  There are many more to choose from!
