Jun. 2, 2009 - When I Grow Up I Want to be a.......
Chef!
The Old Schoolhouse (TOS) Magazine has created another series which seems to be very promising! TOS is known for their quality ebooks to help and support homeschoolers and this new series is no different. Titled the WannaBe Series it is a mini study in what "I want to be when I grow up!"
Most children love to play dress up and will put on shoes, layer up the clothing and become only what their imagination limits them too. Wether a child is pretending to be a mom, firefighter, nurse, vet they act it out and pretend to be that profession. This series isn't about making our children want to be these things (IMO the most honored and blessed profession a girl could have is to be a wife and mom) it allows the child to learn about a profession. I had the chance to look at the WannaBe...Chef ebook and I am pleased that I did.
To begin with their is a introductory letter to the parent and to the student, to sort of aclimate them to what is going to be taught in this particular ebook. I really like the fact that two professional chefs lend their knowledge and 'talks' to the child through this ebook. The style is conversational and relational, so that the child (or parent) feels they are really learning and not just being talked at and so that they can relate it back to their own lifestyle. Learning about chefs and what it entails can make you appreciate just who is making your food in that restaurant you just ate at for dinner!
Like most of TOS ebooks, internet links are included for even more information should you choose to check it out. The ebook discusses what a Chef makes based on where they live, like in Charleston a chef could make $30,359 but in Los Angeles they could make upwards of $71,000.
So what is so educational about this you may ask, well let me tell you. There is a "I Want to Be Chef" quiz, writing and activity prompts, science activities, math problems based on being a chef, vocabulary, fill in the blank, word find, cross word and some wonderful copy work in both printing and cursive. There is also handwriting practice so that they can practice before completing the copy work. Coloring pages, American Sign Language, end of unit activities and themed party ideas round out the rest of what is included in this unit. There are also answers for the teacher and even more links at the end of the ebook.
I would definitely suggest that you check out this new 66 page ebook from TOS, this would be something fun for your children to do over the summer, while you may be traveling and eating at restaurants and they don't even have to know they are learning. Enjoy and to TOS, another job well done!
