Transparent Butterfly aren't they beautiful~~~

It comes from Central America and is found from Mexico to Panama. It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which is a natural camouflage mechanism.

A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful.    As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by rain forest ecologists as an indication of high habitat quality and its demise alerts them of ecological change.  Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glasswing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed: in life that which is unnoticed has the most power.

 This is incredible!

Really something isn't it?
Thanks Vicky

Please be careful before you back up!

Hello:

We do not want to assume that everyone automatically knows who Steven Curtis Chapman is; but if you've been following the news lately you know his family has been touched by a backover tragedy.  Chapman is one of the most visible and influential figures in Christian music.  He has sold over 10 million albums and has won five Grammy awards.  Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth, have six children – three biological and three adopted young girls from China.  On Wednesday, May 21, their youngest daughter, 5-year-old Maria Sue Chapman, was killed because her older brother simply could not see her in the large blind zone behind the SUV he was backing in the driveway.

People Magazine has an article in their June 9th issue entitled, “Grief Beyond Words.”  (pages 83-84).  People Magazine included information about backovers in a special sidebar entitled, “A Preventable Tragedy” with a link to our website.  www.KidsAndCars.org  This is an excellent way to help their readers learn about just how often children are being backed over.

May has been a particularly tragic month for children being hit by vehicles. (backovers and frontovers)  During the past 2 weeks, at least 12 children have lost their lives all over the country.  There also have been many more incidents where children have been critically injured.

May 28, 2008  Child hit, killed by car - St. Petersburg, FL

May 25, 2008  Toddler Accidentally Run Over, Killed In Church Parking Lot - Whitewater, WI

May 24, 2008  Woman accused of hit-and-run death - Lower Onondaga Park, NY

May 22, 2008 17-month-old Rainer Girl Dead After Father Backs Over Her with Jeep - Rainer, WA

May 22, 2008  2-Year-Old Girl Hit By Car, Killed by Family Friend - Greenwood, SC

May 21, 2008  Toddler hit by pickup, killed - Waynesville, FL

May 21, 2008  Toddler dead after being hit by car in driveway - Swisher, IA

May 21, 2008  Steven Chapman's daughter killed by SUV in driveway - Franklin, TN

May 20, 2008  Mom kills tot in driveway tragedy - Garland, TX

May 19, 2008  7-year-old is run over by a pickup - East Dubuque, IL

May 15, 2008  2-year-old dies after being struck by vehicle - Longview, TX

May 15, 2008  Toddler killed by SUV - Roosevelt, UT

Please help us to raise awareness about these predictable and preventable tragedies.  Simply ‘assume’ a child is behind or in front of your car every time you move it.

Walk around and behind a vehicle prior to moving it.

Know where your kids are. Make children move away from your vehicle to a place where they are in full view before moving the car and know that another adult is properly supervising children before moving your vehicle.

Teach children that “parked” vehicles might move. Let them know that they can see the vehicle; but the driver might not be able to see them.

Consider installing cross view mirrors, audible collision detectors, rear view video camera and/or some type of back up detection device.

Measure the size of your blind zone (area) behind the vehicle(s) you drive. A 5-foot-1-inch driver in a pickup truck can have a rear blind zone of approximately 8 feet wide by 50 feet long.

Be aware that steep inclines and large SUV’s, vans and trucks add to the difficulty of seeing behind a vehicle.

Hold children’s hand firmly when leaving the vehicle.

Teach your children to never play in, around or behind a vehicle and always set the emergency brake.

Keep toys and other sports equipment off the driveway.

Homeowners should trim landscaping around the driveway to ensure they can see the sidewalk, street and pedestrians clearly when backing out of their driveway. Pedestrians also need to be able to see a vehicle pulling out of the driveway.

Never leave children alone in or around cars; not even for a minute.

Keep vehicles locked at all times; even in the garage or driveway and always set your parking brake.

Keys and/or remote openers should never be left within reach of children.

Make sure all child passengers have left the car after it is parked.

Be especially careful about keeping children safe in and around cars during busy times, schedule changes and periods of crisis or holidays.

These precautions can save lives.  www.KidsAndCars.org

KIDS AND CARS has Public Service Announcements (PSAs), brochures; window clings to remind parents not to leave children unattended in or around vehicles and anything else you might need to raise awareness about these dangers to children.

All these families have lost a precious family member......famous or not; the pain is just as intense.

Best Regards,

Clark Improv

Hey Clarkies;

June 13 - 15th in the Norman Theatre at the Tulsa PAC.

Kicking off the weekend at 8 pm on Friday, June 13, the Laughing Matter Comedy troupe goes downtown in a unique evening of improvisational comedy.  For one night only, a few of the adult Heller Laughing Matter troupe will combine with the Clark Theatre Laughing Matter (that's you) for a show featuring Tulsa's funniest improv performers.  All tickets $10.

On Saturday June 14, the Norman Theatre hosts the Tulsa Area Community Theatre Alliance showcase.  Just under a dozen local theatres will perform 10 pieces that show off their best features.  Among the offerings, Heller Theatre reprises a scene from "Recent Tragic Events," and Clark Theatre shows a scene from its recent production of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing."  It's a great way to get a 'sampler platter' of Tulsa's thriving theatre scene.  The show starts at 8 pm and all tickets are $10.

On Sunday, June 15 'Round the Bend Players' present "Granny Diva," written by local playwright Dale Whisman.  This original comedy tells the story of Marie, who, after the death of her husband, begins taking acting classes on a lark.  Finally lifting herself out of depression, Marie discovers a talent for acting that takes her from community theater to Broadway, with an unexpected stop at Divaville.  Marie's rediscovery of her true self is at the heart of this original play.  'Round the Bend Players', is Tulsa's first senior theatre troupe.   The show starts at 2 pm and all tickets are $10.

All these events are part of the annual SummerStage festival and sponsored in part by the Tulsa PAC Trust.

Youth Services offers New Art Studios for Summer 2008

Press Release

Youth Services offers New Art Studios for Summer 2008

Youth Services of Tulsa is proud to offer a new slate of art studios for Summer 2008 that foremost encourage self-expression and creative intuition.  Working with some of Tulsa’s finest artists and arts organizations, including National Indian Monument & Institute, 3rd Street Clayworks, and the Bead Merchant, we have developed high quality arts studios at an affordable price.  An exciting opportunity for budding artists at any level—you don’t need any previous experience to be a part of our program; you only need desire to discover, readiness for adventure, and openness to experimentation. Offered in this session are Experimental Photography, Wheel Throwing, Mixed Media Painting, Beadwork and Jewelry Making, Clay Hand Building, Groove, Osage Finger Weaving and YST Drama Troupe.  For ages 12-17. Studios begin the week of June 9th. For a brochure, more information, or questions, please contact Scott Heberling at 382-4427 or sheberling@yst.org. All studios held at Youth Services of Tulsa, 311 S. Madison, unless otherwise indicated.

Beadwork and Jewelry Making

Haven’t you always wanted to make art that you can wear?  By introducing you to varied methods and media of creation, using hemp, cord, wire, leather—and even possibly making your own beads, this studio encourages you to invent and create your own jewelry and beadwork art. Artist: Susanne Barnard. Cost: $40. Tuesdays 4:30-6:00pm. June 10th – Aug. 26th. **Held at The Bead Merchant, 2745 E. 15th St.**

Mixed Media Painting

Through hands-on experience and experimentation, this studio fosters the visual realization of your inner voice by teaching the complimentary use of diverse paint media, collage, found materials, print and paper making, fabric, and an endless variety of other resources in a single work.  A studio where more is often more. Artist: Mary Jane Porter. Cost: $40. Wednesdays 5:30-7:30. June 11th – Aug. 27th.

Experimental Photography

Using some traditional and much non-traditional equipment and methods, create wholly new and different works in the medium of photography.  You will experiment with pinhole cameras, quad lenses, Polaroids, tinting, filters, collage techniques, darkroom techniques and many other means of manipulation. Artist: Gaby Guyman. Cost: $40. Fridays 5:00-7:00. June 13th – Aug. 29th.

Wheel Throwing

A studio in clay offered in partnership with 3rd Street Clayworks. Students will learn how to throw pots, glaze and fire. Artist: Jeff Wells. Cost: $50. An eight week studio on Fridays 6:00-8:30pm. June 13th – Aug. 1st. **Held at 3rd Street Clayworks, 1001 E. 3rd St.**

Pottery Hand Building

Come work with clay.  Create functional hand built items as well as critters, mask, and other fun stuff. Artist: Jeff Wells & Richard Smathers. Cost: $50. An eight week studio on Saturdays 12:30-2:30pm. June 14th – Aug. 2nd. **Held at 3rd Street Clayworks, 1001 E. 3rd St.**

Groove

A workshop for the young poet, musician and percussionist, Groove will provide students the tools to express their thoughts and feelings about life and experiences. A platform for self-expression, the workshop will teach youth to express ideas and use their imagination in song and percussion. The creation process will not only allow expression but will support the willingness to “ask”. Offered in partnership with the National Indian Monument & Institute. Cost: $15. A seven week workshop on Tuesdays from 2:00-4:00pm. June 17th – July 29th.

Osage Finger Weaving

Students will learn the basic techniques to Finger Weaving. This workshop will allow the students to set their own pace and individual time with the instructor, Julie Cote, who is known for her intricate designs and craftsmanship. This type of finger weaving is a traditional off-loom weaving that is practiced and used by many Oklahoma tribes, like the Osage, Muscogee-Creek, Seminole and Choctaw. This will be a hands-on workshop, which will help with dexterity while helping keep a traditional art form alive. Offered in partnership with the National Indian Monument & Institute. Cost: $15. A seven week workshop on Wednesdays from 1:00pm-3:00pm. July 2nd – Aug 13th.

YST Drama Troupe

An exciting and important opportunity for youth, the YST Drama Troupe is a touring ensemble of youth who research, write and perform plays addressing youth-specific issues, exploring the ideas and topics that affect every teen. An ongoing program, the Drama Troupe is always accepting new members committed to the idea of writing and performance as a way to both freely express themselves, their concerns, and their opinions and to using this expression for positive development. Artist: Scott Heberling. Cost: This program is free. Ongoing—call #382-4427 for details.

Always wanted to blog?

Liz does such an awesome job this came from her site: If you or your kids have always wanted to blog here is your chance for free in a safe environment. I have a friend that blogs here several actually, it is a good place it is easy to navigate and learn. The page is a lot like this on that I am on. Thanks Liz! Sunny

I am a member of www.TheHomeschoolLounge.com. I love it. You can
have your own page, blog, chat with other homeschool moms, join
discussion groups and so much more. Because their moms were having
so much fun the kids wanted a place so they could have their own
place and page and blog and chat so THL created a safe place for
them. The adult membership is free because there are ads, but the
child's site, which will be connected to your site, is ad free.

If your child has been wanting a MySpace page, but you don't want
them to be vulnerable to everything out there, get a The Homeschool
Lounge site for yourself and get a webpage for your child. The
children's page costs $2.95 per month or $14.95 for 6 months. It is
safe and you choose who will be your child's friends from other
homeschoolers on the site.

I noticed that they have a boys only and girls only groups, a Webkins
group, horselovers, pen pals, and more.
