Cherokee Heritage Center - Nov 2005

The Cherokee Heritage Center is a nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation and promotion of Cherokee history and culture.  Located in the Oklahoma foothills of the Ozark Mountains, the Cherokee Heritage Center houses numerous exhibits, villages and activities designed to educate others about Cherokee history and culture.  The Cherokee Heritage Center, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, is home to the Ancient Village, Adams Corner Rural Village, the Trail of Tears exhibit, the Cherokee National Museum, the Cherokee Family Research Center, Cherokee Heritage Tours and the Tsa La Gi Amphitheater.  The wide variety of activities offered help the heritage center to reach its goal of becoming the best and most visited, tribally specific educational facility in the world.

Ancient Village: Once behind the large barricade surrounding the Ancient Village, visitors are transported to a time free of European influence.  Knowledgeable guides who teach the practices of their ancestors offer guided tours of this extensive village.  Guests will enjoy learning Cherokee history as they visit the village’s numerous living exhibits.  Demonstrations such as stomp dancing, flint knapping, blowgun shooting, pottery, stickball and basketry offer an educational, yet exciting opportunity for guests of every age.

Adams Corner Rural Village: Adams Corner Rural Village is a reconstruction of a late 19th century rural Cherokee community as it may have appeared after European contact. Each of the village’s seven buildings are designed and decorated to represent the lifestyles of Cherokee people during this time. Connected to Adams Corner is Heritage Farm, home to many animals common in this period.

Trail of Tears Exhibit: Visitors can learn about the journey of the Cherokee and four other tribes through the Trail of Tears exhibit permanently housed in the Cherokee National Museum. Through special effects lighting, videos, audio recordings, artwork, life-cast figures and holograms, this exhibit gives a detailed account of the Trail of Tears and often has a profound effect on each visitor.

Cherokee National Museum: The Cherokee National Museum houses many historically and culturally significant artifacts and artwork. In addition, the museum hosts two major art shows each year giving artists an opportunity to showcase their work and visitors an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind pieces. The museum also features a shop where visitors can purchase handcrafted Cherokee clothing, pottery, prints, jewelry, baskets and weavings.

Cherokee Family Research Center: A genealogy library is available Monday through Friday, and Saturday by appointment, with paid Museum admission. Basic genealogy workshops are held the first Saturday of each month. Advanced research is provided for an additional rate.  This genealogy library houses numerous books to aid in various types of genealogical research.

Cherokee Heritage Tours: Cherokee Heritage Tours offers a unique one-day trip unlike any other tour in this region. Groups will spend an intriguing day with a step-on guide and get an "inside" look at the things that are uniquely Cherokee. Itineraries will be planed to fit the needs of each group.

Tsa La Gi Amphitheater: The 1,800-seat Tsa La Gi Amphitheater is one of America’s most beautiful outdoor theater venues. The amphitheaters natural acoustics and highly acclaimed performances create an enjoyable experience for both guests and artists.
