Museum of Great Plains Activities - Lawton
Education Opportunities at the Museum of the Great Plains, 601 NW Ferris Ave. Lawton, OK. Website: http://www.museumgreatplains.org/index.html 1.
Children's Chores. Bring your class out to the Museum of the Great
Plains to experience early chores children performed in the morning and
after school. For instance, hauling firewood and water, changing
the mattress straw, shucking corn, grinding corn to meal, cooking
biscuits, and various other prairie home activities. Available by reservation throughout the year. 2. Red River Trading Post Red
River Trading Post was built from a written description of an actual
fur trade "station" which operated along Red River, c1840. Dealing
primarily with the Comanches and Kiowas, customers also included
Caddos, Wichitas, Wacos, Kiechias, Tonkawas, and Anadarkos, among
others. RRTP is stocked with both the hides of the animal species
hunted and trapped on the Southern Plains at the time, and the goods
for which these hides were traded. These hides include black bear,
beaver and buffalo, while the goods range from buttons and calico
cloth, butcher knives and belt axes, to tin ware and brick tea. Come
visit where paper money didn't exist, but furs bought needed
supplies. Available by reservation throughout the year. 3. Rental Kit "Plains Indian Life"
Items comprising this kit are typical of a Plains Indian home, c1875. A
bow, quiver & arrows, buffalo and otter hides, dolls, pipes,
tomahawks, moccasins, bone scrapers, parfleche, games, shell buttons,
buffalo bladder container, and quills. This kit allows students to see
and handle these and other items that otherwise would be only a
photograph or drawing in a book. It is a tangible link to the culture
and heritage of this region.
