Foreign Exchange Student - Statewide
As a homeschool parent and pastor, I am also area representative for OCEAN, a foreign exchange student organization. We place international high school students in American high schools and with host families. OCEAN has tremendously high moral standards to which all incoming students must abide. Many are Christians, and many are not, but all will attend church with the host family. They are exceptional in academics. This is like doing foreign missions in one's own home. Our family has hosted two students ourselves in the past, and one boy, now a young family man, is a Christian back in his home country of Uzbekistan. We had incredibly wonderful experiences. I can't think of a better type family a student can stay with it than a Christian home school family. The advantages are enormous for everybody concerned. A student does not need his own bedroom; he or she just needs a separate bed. The host family provides room and board; all students' natural parents will provide spending money for everything else. The students usually ride the school bus every day. The host family gets to pick which student it wants, based upon gender, nationality, interests, etc. We have many students arriving in August to be here until the end of the school year in May 2007. We have other students who will be arriving next January in mid-term and staying until the end of the fall semester in December 2007. Please contact me for more information: Chris Humphreys, (405) 969-2226, Humphreys6@peoplepc.com. Also visit www.oceanintl.org, 1-800-28-OCEAN to learn more about the program.

OHLAP Scholarship Info
If you are looking for information about qualifying for the OHLAP scholarship, check out this website: http://www.okhighered.org/ohlap/required-courses.shtml. You will also find a handy checklist (pdf document) of courses required to obtain this scholarship. *Students graduating from a high school not accredited by the Oklahoma State Board of Education or a recognized accrediting agency must also achieve a composite ACT score of 22 or higher.
Note from Cindy about homeschool eligibility: On June 29, 2006, I received this email when inquiring about homeschool eligibility: "The law does not currently allow home schooled students to receive the scholarship; however, we strongly encourage home schooled students to enroll. There was a bill introduced, but defeated in the last legislative session. If the law is changed, we do not anticipate a change to the enrollment requirement of the student being in the 8th, 9th or 10th grade or a "grandfathering" clause. Thank you." Geography Bee Info - Statewide
At least six, and possibly 7 or 8, of the 55 participants in the National Geography Bee in Washington DC on May 24th were homeschoolers! Read about it here: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/04/0404_060404_state_bee.html The winners from the school level bees across the state take a written test and the top 100 scores go to the state bee. The winner of the state bee and their "teacher" get an all expense paid trip to Washington DC to the national bee. If anyone is interested in participating or hosting a school bee and needs more information please contact Tamara at tamaragelnar@sbcglobal.net. The more groups that host a bee, the more chances homeschoolers have of getting to the national bee. You
only have to have a minimum of six students (4th through 8th graders)
for a group to have a school-level bee. Please view the website as most of your questions will be answered there! http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geographybee/study_corner.html Contact: Tamara Gelnar, H: 405.348.7743; C: 405.816.5764

Genj Clubs - Statewide OK
Mrs. Beth Harkins and her daughter Caroline of OKC are wanting to form a new GenJ Club in their area. The Harkins live on the northwest side of OKC. (Just a reminder, there is a GenJ Club located in Del City. If you want to join that Club, contact Liz Cromack at ecromack@cox.net.) If you are interested in joining this new Club, please contact Mrs. Harkins or Caroline at theharkinszoo@yahoo.com.
If you live within 30-45 minutes of OKC, I would strongly encourage you to contact Mrs. Harkins and Caroline and consider joining the Club. There are numerous benefits that Clubs provide. Each Club meets once a month where the members will pray for elected officials, discuss current issues, participate in civic and community duties, prepare for campaigns and SATs, and help be conduits of the truth - both politically and spiritually.
Right now, there are two other Clubs in Oklahoma, and Ned really wants to increase the number of Clubs in each state by the end of the year. Additionally, there will be several campaigns in Oklahoma this fall that we would like to get involved in. The GenJ Clubs are vital in helping to recruite volunteers and win races.
If you do not live near OKC, but are interested in starting a Club in your own area, please email GenJ at generationjoshu@hslda.org.

They are treating them just as any high school student, to include the fact they will qualify for enlistment bonuses up to $20,000, free college tuition for all of Oklahomas State Colleges and Vo-Tecs. Fossil Hunting Field Trip - Arbuckle - Must respond by April 2
The dates for the Fossil Hunt have been decided. We had such a huge response that we had to set up 2 different days to accomodate all the people. Many of you requested a Saturday, so that both parents could attend. So the first date is Saturday, May 13th and the other date is Monday, May 15th. I also had a few people mention to me they will not be able to attend if we scheduled in May. So, for those of you who absolutely cannot make one of the May dates, CTF has scheduled another homeschool group out of Norman, for Tuesday,April 11th. They are willing to add about 5 more families to their group to help accomodate us. We are only opening up this date to those of you who absolutely cannot make it otherwise. I will need everyone to email me once again, to request the date that you prefer. This will be on a first come, first serve basis. That's the only fair way to do it. Please indicate your alternative choice if the date you requested is unavailable. Also let me know if the date is your only choice. I must receive a response from you again in order to confirm your attendance on one of these days. I also need to know how many family members you will be bringing and the children's ages. Once the sorting has been done, I will email you with complete instructions and confirmation of the day I have you signed up for. Example: #1 choice: May 13th or Only option: May 15th #of Adults: 1 # of Adults: 2 child #1: 14 child #1 14 child#2: 8 child#2 8 child#3: 2 child#3 2 The charge is $25 per family(this includes all children). So if you have a 10 yr. old and a 2 yr. old, the charge is still $25. The $15 student fee is only if you are sending your child along with another family. The money goes to support the operations of the Creation Truth Foundation. Check out their website, if you would like additional information http://www.creationtruth.com/ . You must respond by Sunday, April 2nd. Also, be thinking about who you might carpool with so that we can cut down on the amount of vehicles in the caravan. We will probably be meeting in South OKC or Norman around 8:45/9:00am and caravanning to the Arbuckles from there. I realize those of you with large families will not be able to carpool, but for those of you with smaller families, combining with another small family would be a huge help. We will finish up around 3:00pm. There will be a bathroom break in Davis, OK and a few places there to pick up something you forgot, but it's best to bring a sack lunch with you. With such a large group, everyone going to the bathroom, is going to take up enough time, as it is. Things to Bring: Sack Lunch Your $25 per family(cash or check made out to CTF) Hammer-for chiseling bug repellent sunscreen appropriate clothing, especially shoes for hiking something to carry your fossils home in If you have additional questions, please email Karyn Henvey at karynhenvey@yahoo.com or call at 749-0310 to sign up, no later than Sunday, April 2nd.

Contests for Homeschoolers in OK
The State Department of Education, State
Department of Labor, and the Parks and Recreation Departments are
working together to host the 2nd annual Playground Safety Awareness
Poster Contest for K-6 Oklahoma students. Last year my daughter,
Brooke, was the only homeschooler to enter. She placed 1st in her
age catagory, so I was asked to help let other homeschoolers know about
the contest this year. The award ceramony was at the State
Capital where the winning posters were on display for a week, they met
and got their picture taken with Gov. Henry, had a calendar made from
their posters, and received savings bonds (ranging from $25-$1000) as
prizes. This year the posters must be in by March 31. The full
contest rules are at the Labor Dept. website, http://www.labor.ok.gov/news/photos/newsphotos20051024.htm. You can download last years calendar, get this years contest rules, or view last year's winners.
* OERB has a poster contest for 3rd-6th graders. Info for that contest is on the 2nd page of their newsletter, http://www.oerb.com/downloads/ProgressReports/classified/2006classified.pdf.
* Oklahoma Council on Economic Education is having a poster contest,
Drawing for Dollars to highlight an economic or money management
concept. The contest rules are at: http://www.ocee-ok.org/drawingfordollarsad.pdf

All Star Band Auditions
|
CENTENNIAL COMMISSION CREATES ALL STAR CENTENNIAL BAND!!! Produced
by Charles Jones II, a native Oklahoman, this unique group will perform
at many significant and yet unannounced events to promote Oklahomas
first 100 years. To
promote the event, special clinics for eligible musicians will be held
across the state. During these clinics, young musicians will not only
learn about how they can best prepare for the rigorous auditions, but
have the opportunity to lay down a musical track creating a musical
video of the sights and sounds of Oklahoma. This once in a life-time
experience for high school musicians is just one project the Oklahoma
Centennial Commission is sponsoring to celebrate Oklahomas first 100
years! Eligibility Only
Oklahoma high school students enrolled in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade
in April 2006, are eligible to audition. This includes homeschoolers.
Students must also have a grade point average of 3.0 (out of 4.0 scale)
to be eligible. Only the following instruments will be considered:
Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, horn,
euphonium, trombone, sousaphone and percussion. Percussionists will audition on snare drum at the initial audition. Audition dates and locations: Saturday, April 22, 2006 University of Oklahoma Campus, Norman, OK Sunday, April 23, 2006 Woodward High School Campus, Woodward, OK Sunday, April 29, 2006 Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK Eligible
musicians may choose which audition they would like to attend. Once
they have completed their application form and obtained their letters
of reference, they may sign-up for a spot on the audition roster.
Students who pass the first level of auditions at one of the locations
listed above will be assigned an audition time for the final auditions
on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Oklahoma City University, in Oklahoma
City. Interested students should contact Oklahoma Centennial Band
offices by calling 800-914-1002 or through e-mail at

Don't forget Capitol Day on Feb 20th!
February 21, 2006 at the Oklahoma State
Capitol. Each year home educators from across the state gather at the
capitol to learn how to influence their legislators and then put that
knowledge into action.
The objectives for Capitol Day are:
To protect the right, granted in the Oklahoma constitution, of parents to home educate their children;
To bring home education to the legislature, demonstrating that it is a
viable option for providing an excellent education and that regulation
is not necessary; and
To build positive relationships with our lawmakers, allowing them to meet and visit with homeschooling families and students.
