7th Annual Cherokee Gospel Sing - Park Hill, OK
7th Annual Cherokee Gospel Sing to be Held at the Cherokee Heritage Center Park Hill, Okla. On May 20, 2006 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. the 7th Annual Cherokee Gospel Sing and Hog Fry will be held on the grounds of the Cherokee Heritage Center. Everyone is invited to this free concert and hog-fry. This will be an evening to remember of beautiful music, fun and food. So bring your lawn chairs to sit under the sky and enjoy Cherokee and English gospel singing by local choirs, individuals and regional vocal groups.
While at the Cherokee Heritage Center see the many attractions and exhibits we have to offer, like the Ancient Village, Adams Corner Rural Village, the Cherokee National Museum, the Museum Shop and the Trail of Tears Exhibit. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission: $8.50 Adults, $5 Children, $7.50 Students and Seniors. Free admission for children ages 5 and under and Cherokee National Historical Society members.

Trail of Tears Art Show - Park Hill
|
PARK HILL, Okla. The 35th Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale opens on Saturday, April 29. Guests are encouraged to attend this prestigious show to view more than 250 entries from across the United States. Categories for this years show include Painting, Graphics, Sculpture, Miniatures, Basketry, Pottery, and the Trail of Tears Theme. Another popular category is the miniature category, where artwork is not allowed to exceed four inches high by four inches wide. The Trail of Tears Art Show can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The exhibit will be shown through May 28. Upcoming Events at Cherokee Heritage Center - Tahlequah
April 22
Cherokee Pottery Class. Saturday, April 22, PJ Gillam-Stewart will be
teaching the history of Southeastern handcrafted pottery. Pottery has
always been an important part of Cherokee heritage and much of it has
been found at various sites in the old Cherokee Nation. Class fee is

May 13th
Limb Flute Class: A demonstration on how to create a Native American
style flute from a tree branch and will cover the tools, methods and
design of a flute that can be used by anyone.

Gospel Sing and Hog Fry. Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs
and listen to several Cherokee and English gospel music groups. A FREE

The Life of John Ross Exhibit: John Ross served as Chief of the
Cherokee Nation from 1828 until his death in 1866. His administration
lasted during a time that included the Removal, the "Golden Age" and
the Civil War.

Indian Territory Days March 30-31
Indian Territory Days March 30 - 31st.
Letting children learn through experience can be the most exciting way
to teach them about history. That is why the Cherokee Heritage
Center hosts Indian Territory Days, a hands-on cultural event designed
to teach students about Cherokee history and culture. This year,
Indian Territory Days will be March 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Students participating in Indian Territory Days will learn of the
Cherokee lifestyle typical to the late 1800s through storytelling,
cultural demonstrations and re-enactments. In addition, they can
participate in stickball games, blowgun shooting, marble playing and
museum tours. Visitors can also walk through the Ancient Village
to learn more about Cherokee trades such as basket weaving, flint
knapping, and housing structures.
Admission to Indian Territory Days is $4 per child. One adult will be
admitted free with every ten children. For more information or to

Cherokee Saturday at the Cherokee Heritage Center
First Cherokee Saturday of the Year
Offered Feb. 4. PARK HILL, Okla. On the first Saturday of every month
members of all federally recognized Cherokee tribes, and one guest, are
admitted free to the Cherokee Heritage Center museum and
villages. The first Cherokee Saturday of 2006 is February
4. Visitors are encouraged to take
advantage of this opportunity to view the Cherokee Genealogy Dawes Roll
Exhibit. This exhibit features several Cherokee rolls and their
value to researchers and will show reasons why the Dawes Roll was
created as the only roll accepted in documenting Cherokee tribal
membership. Also offered on the first Saturday of every month are
newly developed genealogy workshops, sponsored by Bartlesville Office
Supply. Experienced genealogist Roy Hamilton will be
available at 11 a.m. to offer instruction on the numerous resources
available for tracing ones family history. While this workshop
is free to tribal members on Cherokee Saturday, registration by the
Friday prior to the workshop is required. In addition to the above-mentioned items, the Cherokee Heritage Center offers many permanent attractions.
The Ancient Village offers guided tours through a replica of a Cherokee
village as it would have appeared before European contact. Visitors can
witness Cherokee people performing the daily activities of their
ancestors. Adams Corner Rural Village represents the
lifestyles of the Cherokee people in the late 1800s. Visitors
can take a self-guided tour through the seven historical buildings that
make up this replica of a Cherokee village. Through the Trail of
Tears Exhibit visitors can learn more about the tragic journey known as
the Trail of Tears traveled by the Cherokee and four other
tribes. Through special effects lighting, videos, audio
recordings, art work, life cast figures and holograms, this exhibit
gives a detailed account of the Trail of Tears, a tragedy that has
become a symbol for the suffering of all Indian people. The Museum Store offers a wide variety of books, apparel, jewelry, and other native arts and crafts.

Cherokee Heritage Center - Nov 2005
The Cherokee Heritage Center is a
nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation and promotion of
Cherokee history and culture. Located in the Oklahoma foothills
of the Ozark Mountains, the Cherokee Heritage Center houses numerous
exhibits, villages and activities designed to educate others about
Cherokee history and culture. The Cherokee Heritage Center, in
Tahlequah, Oklahoma, is home to the Ancient Village, Adams Corner Rural
Village, the Trail of Tears exhibit, the Cherokee National Museum, the
Cherokee Family Research Center, Cherokee Heritage Tours and the Tsa La
Gi Amphitheater. The wide variety of activities offered help the
heritage center to reach its goal of becoming the best and most
visited, tribally specific educational facility in the world.
Ancient Village: Once behind the large barricade surrounding the
Ancient Village, visitors are transported to a time free of European
influence. Knowledgeable guides who teach the practices of their
ancestors offer guided tours of this extensive village. Guests
will enjoy learning Cherokee history as they visit the villages
numerous living exhibits. Demonstrations such as stomp dancing,
flint knapping, blowgun shooting, pottery, stickball and basketry offer
an educational, yet exciting opportunity for guests of every age.
Adams Corner Rural Village: Adams Corner Rural Village is a
reconstruction of a late 19th century rural Cherokee community as it
may have appeared after European contact. Each of the villages seven
buildings are designed and decorated to represent the lifestyles of
Cherokee people during this time. Connected to Adams Corner is Heritage
Farm, home to many animals common in this period. Trail
of Tears Exhibit: Visitors can learn about the journey of the Cherokee
and four other tribes through the Trail of Tears exhibit permanently
housed in the Cherokee National Museum. Through special effects
lighting, videos, audio recordings, artwork, life-cast figures and
holograms, this exhibit gives a detailed account of the Trail of Tears
and often has a profound effect on each visitor.
Cherokee National Museum: The Cherokee National Museum houses many
historically and culturally significant artifacts and artwork. In
addition, the museum hosts two major art shows each year giving artists
an opportunity to showcase their work and visitors an opportunity to
purchase one-of-a-kind pieces. The museum also features a shop where
visitors can purchase handcrafted Cherokee clothing, pottery, prints,
jewelry, baskets and weavings. Cherokee Family Research
Center: A genealogy library is available Monday through Friday, and
Saturday by appointment, with paid Museum admission. Basic genealogy
workshops are held the first Saturday of each month. Advanced research
is provided for an additional rate. This genealogy library houses
numerous books to aid in various types of genealogical research.
Cherokee Heritage Tours: Cherokee Heritage Tours offers a unique
one-day trip unlike any other tour in this region. Groups will spend an
intriguing day with a step-on guide and get an "inside" look at the
things that are uniquely Cherokee. Itineraries will be planed to fit
the needs of each group. Tsa La Gi Amphitheater: The
1,800-seat Tsa La Gi Amphitheater is one of Americas most beautiful
outdoor theater venues. The amphitheaters natural acoustics and highly
acclaimed performances create an enjoyable experience for both guests

Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale: This competitive art show
and sale features works from some of the top Cherokee artists in the
Nation. Entries are open only to artists who are members of the
Cherokee Nation, United Keetoowah Band or Easter Band of

Cultural Class: Flint Knapping & Blowguns Experienced

Cherokee Geneology Seminar - Tahlequah
Reduced Registration Now Offered for Cherokee Genealogy Seminar
PARK
HILL, Okla. The Cherokee Heritage Center is currently offering a
reduced registration fee for the upcoming genealogy seminar, In the
Cherokee Nation: A Guide to Research. The seminar is Saturday,
Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Osiyo Classroom located behind
the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop in Tahlequah. Desk registration is
from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m.
Pre-registration, before Oct. 10, for this conference is $30 for Cherokee National Historical Society
members and $35 for non-members. Registration after Oct. 10 is
$45 for members and $50 for non-members. Early registration is
recommended as class size is limited to the first 50 enrollees.
Participants of this seminar will be introduced to several aspects of
Cherokee history as well as the various techniques used to conduct
Cherokee genealogical research. General and detailed information
about particular Cherokee rolls will be offered.
