December 24, 2009 - Three Christmas Books To Read Before You Die
The Best Christmas Pagent Ever by Barbara Robinson This one may seem slightly irreverent to some, but I love it. Mary, Joseph, the wise men and the shepards were all REAL ordinary people put in a REAL extrordinary circumstance. How would you have reacted?
The Other Wise Man by Henry Van Dyke Matthew 25:40. A fourth wise man traveling more slowly than his better-known companions searches for Jesus his whole life, always just a step behind. Will he have any treasure left to give the King when he finally finds him?
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens I'm sure you are all familiar with the story line. I would, however, encourage you to read the original if you haven't. The language and word pictures are amazing. (Those of you who were at the Christmas Concert last week have a head start of several pages.)

Dec. 23, 2009 - A Savior is Born
A young woman gently rests her newborn child on the hay in the manger. Her first born, she already knows God has great plans for Him. She already knows her son, no, God's Son, would be teaching her, not the other way around. The Messiah, King of Kings, Prince of Peace, was here. Their Savior had come.
And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, for there was no room for them in the inn. ~ Luke 2:7
A shepherd sits silhouetted against the night's mysterious light. His gaze remains transfixed on a star shining vividly above the town of Jerusalem. He has never seen it so bright. He turns to the other shepherds and points. He does not need to use words. Their eyes follow his finger and they marvel at the star, shining so brilliantly. An Angel of the Lord stands before them, and the glory of the Lord shines around them. They tremble in fear, and fall to the ground in awe. The Angel speaks, telling them of great tidings.
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ~ Luke 2:11
Another man sees the same star the shepherd has been watching. He also calls others to look, showing them the star of the King of Jews. Their clothes are not like those of the shepherds, coarse and rough, but are fine and rich. The wise men prepare for a journey, bringing gifts and hearts ready to worship an infant King.
"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." ~ Matthew 2:2

We finally have our Christmas Cards sent out and away into the vast world. Of course, we were late in getting them out. I think that has become our trademark.
Anyway, it's just one more thing that signifys how close Christmas is! Yay!

Saturday, December 19, 2009 - Washing Dishes By Hand
Up until recently, it was my job to empty the dishwasher. This happened daily, sometimes twice a day.Well, a few months ago, Mom decided we were going to quit using the dishwasher. Just an experiment to see if it made any difference on our electric bill. We kids (I was, at least) were skeptical, but went along with it cheerfully enough. Surprisingly - I found I love washing dishes! We quickly worked out a schedule. Emily is to wash the breakfast dishes, Elisabeth and I do the lunch dishes, and Amy and Mom do the supper dishes. It works out pretty well!
One more thing - we don't run out of knives anymore! That might not seem like a big deal. But we used to be running out of knives constantly, it seems. Now that the dishes get washes more often than once a day (in theory at least, right?), the cupboards are more full of dishes.
So you see, technology isn't always that much better. In this case, I think washing by hand is better. That doesn't mean I'm going to start washing clothes by hand, though. Don't get any funny ideas.
