Lord of the Rings

Aug. 13, 2007 - Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings?

I've been reading the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. I started reading them when Aldawen had her trivia contest a few weeks ago. I was going to try to read them before the contest ended but I never got to. I am, however, still reading them. I am on the Voyage of the Dawn Treader right now. I have read "The Magician's Nephew", which was excellent, "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe", "Prince Caspian" and now I'm on the VotD. I skipped "The Horse and His Boy" because I started to read it but it was not interesting. I will, most likely, go back and read it. I just wasn't in the mood before.

I loved the Magician's Nephew. It was so fascinating and I couldn't put it down. I finished reading it within three-four hours. I had read the Loin, the Witch and the Wardrobe before so that was an easy read. Prince Caspian was awesome. I think Caspian is one of my favourite characters. He sounds so heroic and so handsome. I love the way he takes charge when they come to the Lone Islands. Edmund is my other favourite character. I felt sorry for Ed in the second book and he just improved as the books continued. He starts to act like a real brother to Lucy and is a lot more loving towards her. I can't wait to see what's next.

I believe that Lewis is, in fact, a great writer. I've learned a lot about him because of him knowing Tolkien. He was a Christian, which played a big part in his books since it is an allegory to the Bible. There are quite a few things that line right up with things that happened in the Bible. It's pretty cool.

I know some would prefer him over Tolkien. What is your choice? Would you rather read Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings?

I thought I'd take a poll since this is a LOTR blog... how many of our readers are actually Narnia fans moreso than LOTR fans?

Well, I have not read any of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy except for the Hobbit. I tried reading The Fellowship of the Ring, but got to the 400th page and was confused. I have read all of the Chronicles of Narnia, several times in fact. I don't think I can give a definite answer on this subject, since I don't know that much about the Lord of the Rings.

I can understand why you skipped the Horse & His Boy. It is different. I could hardly tell it was a Narnia book at first. It does get more interesting towards the end, but you're not really missing any vital part of the story by skipping it.

Sincerely,
Kylie

That's a tough one! As to the books, I like LOTR because of its sheer size...it's an incredibly epic story! But, if you're interested in the meaning behind the stories, CON is a fantastic piece of literature. That's my take on it, anyway!

P.S You didn't like the Horse and His Boy?? That's my favorite one!!! But I'll admit, it did take a second read-through for me to get interested... :-)

Aug. 16, 2007 - Of The Lord of the Rings, and of History

I like the Lord of the Rings better because It's history is phenomenal! The intricacy in Tolkien's writings are truly amazing. In the Silmarillion, he told even all the way back to the creation of the world. What's more, all of his stories fit together. Once you find all of them, they make the most sense than almost anything that you've ever read. So if your like me and you love books with the history included, The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and especially the Silmarillion are perfect for you!

It's just usually people don't want to take the time and effort to read them and actually try to understand them. :-)

I don't know if I would rather read the Chronicles of Narnia or LOTR. I've heard the Chronicles of Narnia is a good book. I think my mother said she read it. I've actually been reading LOTR latley. Have you read LOTR Jocelyn? Maybe sometime if my parents have the money I might try reading the Chronicles of Narnia, though I would rather read LOTR right now. :)

I wouldn't know, I haven't read any of the LOTR books except for The Hobbit. I'm still trying to get ahold of the other LOTR books, but I think I like either one, The Hobbit was good! Oh, The Horse and His Boy starts out kinda slow, but It's REALLY good! I've read them all, and I LOVE them too!

Although I dearly love Lewis, I still prefer Tolkien by far. LotR is so much more deep and has such amazing history. The language is richer; overall, I just think it's much more epic.

CoN is more simple and childlike - which I love of course, but don't prefer over the poetic nature of LotR. There are quite a few allegories in CoN, but when you think about it, LotR portrays great Christian philosophies in much bigger ways. It's horizon is wider, so to speak. I would try to explain it, but I am too inept in expressing things through words...

One can hardly read about Lewis or Tolkien without learning about the other. I love how Tolkien was influential in bringing Lewis to Christ.

Thanks for linking me. :-)

I would much rather read CON. I've never read LOTR but I've read the Hobbit and found it not to my taste of books.

I think I prefure the Narnia books over LOTR, but I have not read all the Narnia books while I have read all the LOTR books. I know it's weird.

I definatly enjoy Lord of the Rings more. I do like CON, but I tend to fall asleep while reading them. Lord of the Rings keeps me on my toes. (For the record I fell asleep once during the second LOTR movie.)

Sep. 16, 2007 - CoN Vs. LOTR

I read only one of the Narnia books, "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" but I do remember loving it. However, that was as a kid and so maybe I wouldn't like it as much today (maybe I should pick it up again). I read the LOTR books as an adult and while I did enjoy them, I remembered being bored with all the songs. Still it's too hard for me to compare one to the other without nostalgia getting in the way!
