Apr. 15, 2008 - No Cook Cooking Day for Homeschoolers
On Friday we attended a no cook cooking class held at a local library. It was just for homeschoolers. The program is LYFVE (pronounced life) and it stands for Love Your Fruits and VEgetables. The kids made a dinosaur using a half of bagel, green beans, strawberries, and cherry tomatoes. The older kids then made Humpty Dumpty, using hard boiled eggs and other foods. It was a nice event and my kids had fun. Plus, their friends from co-op went also, so it was an extra bonus.

Apr. 8, 2008 - Our Monday
I started off the day by rearranging our living room and that spread into moving out some stuff from our computer room. Now our desk is in the living room and our computer room, once dining room, once bedroom is getting ready to become a bedroom once again (its original state). The kids spent the morning playing and pretending. They played house, school, store, ballet class, and other things I can't think of at this time. Ariella had geography this morning and while she was gone, the babies slept and Kaylah played a few computer games while I showered and did some laundry. Then we had a delightful tea party.
When Ariella came home, she and Kaylah decided to learn and put on a play, Fee-Fi-Fo. It's a two character play based on Jack the Beanstalk. They plan on practicing every day and will put on the play for us this weekend. After lunch, we played Battleship. The girls were so excited because Ariella happened to spot it on-line the other night when I was browsing on e-bay and I ordered it for them. Well, it came this afternoon in the mail and we had it in the house for not even a minute and the wrapper was off the package. Our game was cut short because we had to leave for CCD.
Hooray...Jason went and bought the wood I needed to build our garden and sandbox. I would have bought it myself a few weeks ago, but 10 foot pieces of wood just won't fit in my minivan! Hopefully the weather is nice on Wednesday so I can get out in the yard and start building. Tonight, we went for dinner and a tour of McDonald's with Brownies. The girls and parents seemed to have a really fun time. My girls were most impressed with the freezer. Boy, it was cold in there! Overall, our Monday was pretty calm and a good beginning to the week ahead.

Mar. 30, 2008 - Animal Masks
After reading a book about a little boy who makes his costume for a school play, Ariella and Kaylah decided to make their own costumes. Kaylah decided on a bunny and Ariella, a cat.

Mar. 18, 2008 - Planetarium tonight
We just got back from taking the Brownies to a local planetarium. How fun! We watched a film about the planets and then headed up to the observatory to see the moon and Saturn through a huge telescope. Saturn looked fake--I could really see the rings around the planet. The man there said that it actually wasn't that great of a picture since it was a little cloudy out. I was amazed at what we could see.

Here is part of the troop getting ready to watch the video. As you can see, Stella came with us too!

Mar. 14, 2008 - TGIF

We're headed to Homeschool Game Day at the library. We're pretty excited about going and hanging out with other homeschoolers. Plus, Ariella's psyched for the fact that we're picking up her friend from co-op to go with us. I'll write about it later!
Added later: Game Day was allright. Ariella played Scattergories with Anna and a boy who was there and then her and Anna watched a game of Chess between two other boys. Kaylah played Chutes and Ladders for a short while then played I Spy Bingo with Gracie and another homeschooled girl. The babies ran amuck...but what else is new?!

Mar. 12, 2008 - Found: Flat Stella!
Hooray! We have located Flat Stella. Tonight she went to Rita's with Maeghan. I have searched high and low in this house for her for the past three months and had absolutely no luck. I was venting to my mom tonight and she suggested that Maeghan may have her and with one phone call, she was found. And now that she's found, we can breathe a sigh of relief. I joined the Flat Stanley Project on the HSL and was hoping to send her off on some new adventures with other homeschooling families. I think she's heading to Mexico first with Brigid for spring break!
Brig, I'll get her to you...with the Thin Mints!

Mar. 12, 2008 - Today's notes (3/11/2008)
We headed back to the Brandywine zoo today for Art at the Zoo. The kids had so much fun. You know, that zoo is wonderful for little tykes. It's much more relaxing because it's small and the only ones that are ever walking around are other homeschoolers (at least during the hs programs that we attend) and the occasional grandparent bringing their grandchild for a tour. I can let the babies out and they can walk along looking at the exhibits. I could never do that for an entire walk through the Philadelphia zoo.
After the zoo, I decided to treat the kids to lunch so we drove through Wendy's, which is a rare moment indeed. Then we headed to the playground for a few hours of more fun. The babies took a short car nap from the zoo to the park, so they were energized enough to go down the slide about fifty times and swing for twenty minutes. It's exhausting to the arms to push a swing any longer, otherwise they would have been content to swing even longer.
I picked up Ariella's friend, Maeghan on our way home. We tried to pick up one of Kaylah's friends too, but it didn't happen. The babies crashed when we got home and so I was able to get a load of wash in, check e-mail, and clean up a little while the girls played Polly Pockets outside on the picnic table. Then it was off to Chapter book club for Ariella and Maeghan. Ariella's doing really well withthat. The last book she read completely on her own. This week's book is a 5th grade level, so I'm anxious to see how she does with it. Maeghan and her are the youngest in the group, but the librarian assures me that she does great with understanding and discussing the books.
Tonight, we went to Penney's with my mom to pick out Easter outfits and Ariella's First Communion dress. She picked out a beautiful one...pics will definitely be uploaded for that one. And the kids will be looking pretty spiffy next Sunday. Stay tuned for those pics too.

Mar. 7, 2008 - Learning history with American Girls
For Christmas this past year, my mom's gift to Ariella and Kaylah was to take them to the American Girl Store in NYC and buy them each a doll. The girls were not familiar with the stories...they only knew what they did about the dolls from the catalog that came to our mailbox. My girls chose their dolls based on their cuteness and accessories. Ariella chose Samantha and Kaylah decided to get Biddy Twins, two girls and gave one to Milana.
A few weeks before going to NYC, I happened to find a few AG books on sale at our library's donated book section and so I bought them for Milana to give to Ariella for Christmas. And since then, we have been reading all sorts of American Girl stories. We especially like the AG short stories. These tell of each girl's experience with certain things, such as Felicity's new shoes (Felicity borrows a new pair of dancing shoes and she improves her skills so well, that she soon no longer needs to rely on the shoes after some time) or Addy's Summer Trip (Addy travels from Philadelphia to Cape Island via train to visit her father). All of the short stories are set in the times of the girl and towards the end, the authors discuss what life was like in those times.
So far, we've read about Felicity who lived in colonial America, Addy who was a black girl growing up through the Civil War, Molly who is quite the patriotic girl of the 20th century, and Samantha who was born around 1900. The stories hold all our interests and when I readthem aloud, we can get through the entire story in about a half hour, perfect for while the babies are napping or while we're sitting at the table eating lunch!
