We just returned from a tag-along trip with daddy, to Indiana. It was laid back and non-stressful. Needed that so much. So anyhoo-posted the pics of some of our experiences there. Please visit my other blog: Homeschooling on a Wing and a Prayer to see the tour and pretty old bridge. If you want to keep up on what is going on with us, please visit my blogspot blogs-I post there most often. I also have a blog for the workbox system- What's in the Box?, one for lapbooking-Scrapbooks and Lapbooks, and one for all my review posts from being a part of the TOS Review Crew (I am returning as a First Mate this year)-1 of 100 (plus 25) TOS Crew Reviews, which is a great place to glean insider info on many homeschool products, with links to other crewmate's blogs and vendor websites! Thanks so much for stopping by! |

Sorry about that-I am mostly on the blogspot ones. I am up to 5 of em now, so maintaining them all can be time consuming. If you haven't had a chance to visit my new blog for workboxes, please do so. Even if you are not using the system, you may get some ideas for your kiddos-and be sure to check the blog roll-lots of great bloggers there too. Thought I would post the little critter my hubby spotted scooting across the yard yesterday before the big storm hit. He is kinda cute. We actually get lots of turtles thru our yard (maybe I will start charging a toll?) becuase for whatever reason their autopilot takes them right between our yard, and the neighbor's house. They go pretty far too, as we have figured they are layed and hatched way across the street in a depression area (gets kinda boggy and such when it rains a lot,but nothing too wet most the time-which is kinda odd because I thought they needed watery areas to lay their eggs)...guess we have some researching to do about turtles. Anyhoo-we usually spot about 10-20 a season. We have a 100 year flood plain (and due to the storm, it is very full of water right now) and a large pond behind us. Guess it is more turtle friendly than the bog area. So it seems they are hardwired to make a trip across the bog, street, and thru our yards to get to the ole pond. Hope he makes it and becomes a big turtle dude, and not anyone's lunch. We let old Columbus go after the huge, destructive storm blew over. The boy loved him and begged for us to keep him-but alas, that just isn't going to happen. We do not have very good luck with that sort of caretaking.
Ok, the one with my son and the turtle is so cute but is taking forever to load (and basically isn't) so I will post that one on my homeschooling on a wing and a prayer blog. |

I started a blog just for workbox chatter; and so if you are interested in such things-please feel free to visit it for ideas, memes and resources. I have links to other blogs that discuss it as well...since this is kind of a newer program -finding such blogs is not easy, except by word of blog. Sure hope this helps you fellow workboxers out; and for those looking to see exactly what all the fuss is in regard to, sure hope it helps answers some of your questions.
Blessings! |

I have been seeing some chatter on some fellow HSer blogs and they kept talking about these workboxes and organizing their hs day and so and I was thinking-"I need to know what this is all about!" I have to buy the book still, but have been gleaning info from several blogs- the gal, Sue Patrick, came up with this idea to use boxes to put the goodies for the day (for each kid) into for them to work on (that way they know what to do, and what needs to be done, and you can see progress and well-it organizes things). Her site is: Sue Patrick's Workbox System I suggest going thru it yourself, since I have yet to buy the book and cannot clearly describe it. Also, check out these blogs for more helps and I see there are also Yahoo groups too. This seems like a great way to get my HS flowing in a positive direction and looks to save frustration on all member's parts (esp. mine!) and you can find info on the FIAR Thread. These are just a few I have found. Hae fun researching this. I will post again after I own the puppy and have a clearer understanding of it.

A small thing really, but it is going to bless our homeschool so much by it. I have tons of things that are in the pile to be laminated. I have been wanting one for years...and finally bought one today. I am so proud of it. Have already laminated my son's practice sheets for his handwriting, and test drove them to see how well they worked (quite nicely actually) so that he will not use up a few hundred tress trying to get his HWing down pat. We just use a washable Vis-a-Visa marker and a paper towel...when he has the letter or number down pat-then he can write out the stuff on a reg. sheet of paper to add to his notebook. We are using a new HWing product I received to review, and I like it, but we had to take a step back to the letter formation so he had that in his head before moving on to the full-blown activities. My mind is buzzing with all sorts of stuff I can make for his schooling....and the kids' photo IDs and getting the FIAR disks laminated, so I can put the velcro dots on them finally (for the map) and so and so on.... It may sound sad to most out there that one gets so excited about a laminator, but if you have a high demand for plasticized items, then you would understand. It obviously doesn't take much to thrill me...hahahaaa. Ah, just had to share my exciting purchase for the day! Well that and the 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies we bought too....

Memory Verse - Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. Introduction - I thought that I would hit the “easy button” this week and not only make the assignment light, but also give us a chance to get to know each other better through prayer. Assignment - This week I would like you to post any prayer requests you have. What is going on in your life that you need prayer warriors for? Feel free to post an unspoken request if you feel it is too personal. Then if you would just take the time to visit as many other BFS buddies as possible, pray for them and then leave them a little note letting them know that you have prayed or will be praying.
Ok, well- Please pray that I can stay focused and finish out the last stretch of weeks for this school year-as we are all feeling the burned sensation and I am lacking motivation. Please pray for our friend Kristen (Inheritance of Hope founder with hubby-info found at Inheritance of Hope) as she is not doing well with the trial drugs/therapies to kill the cancer that is continually growing in her body (she has been struggling with this aggressive and rare cancer for several years-we believe her strong faith in God has kept her fighting and here all this time-esp. since they have 3 young children she homeschools). Please pray the Lord will bring spring here soon-as this winter has been long and overwhelming to many in the upper US states. Thanks.

Concerning the problem of not being able to get away. Now, I understand that concept all too well-for years and years I didn't so much as get to a coffee shop or anything. I thought I was being selfish, didn't have money/help (or so I thought-yes, you have to ask for it, it won't fall into your lap like I thought it should) and/or I thought it wasn't necessary....I learned the hard way it is vital to do something for yourself...even if it is just locking yourself in the room while dad or someone watches the kids-so that you can recharge (either by reading/Bible study/listening to music/napping/whatever). I payed a heavy price physically for not taking care of myself...I still am. It has taken years (many, many) to get myself repaired. I am not out of the woods yet, but much, much better. You see, it does eat away at ya inside-physically, emotionally and spiritually. It does. The best way to get a getaway is to plan one, months in advance. I know of moms who get together, book a hotel room for one or two nights (sharing expenses) and then when the time comes, they go off and recoup. It can be done-with planning. There has to be someone you can trust with the kids for even a few hours. A trusted sitter, neighbor, your parents/inlaws, family or what have ya. Pray about it. Ask God to provide the funds, help and place. Even if you go alone! I have done that too-not my first choice, but it did recharge me! I am not talking about heading out the door every weekend or so-I only do my scrapping weekend 2x per year-once in the late winter and once again in mid-fall. That is all I need. I walk for 45 min. every other day and usually alone, with my i-pod and God, but sometimes I bring along the fam or esp. the hubby-those moments make for mini-recharges-but a good ole fashioned leaving of the typical area I see/partake in is a very good thing. I spend almost all my time at home with the kids (as I have chosen to do and truly love it), I pretty much only frequent the same places: grocery store, church, library, bank-but after a while-it becomes so monotonous that I become numb to it. I glaze my eyes and miss the details the world has to offer, I get too used to the fam/hubby that I take the everyday things for granted...I forget that I too, am human and must spend time refreshing, and renewing my mind/spirit to avoid serious health and spiritual problems. It is not being self-absorbed; nor do I constantly ponder upon the next get away-I just try my best to schedule out some time for me that is balanced and fair. Jesus is my example here-even he needed to walk away, go off by himself and pray and think-and if GOD has to do that-then why should I think I do not? It took me YEARS to get to this point and to be able to say that. YEARS, and my post was really to encourage all you to remember to recharge yourselves as well...no matter how you accomplish it. I do so hope that you all saw it as it was meant to be, encouragement to take care of yourself all the while you are taking care of others-I think moms tend to forget that. I know I do (still) and will reread this post on occassion to remind myself. Blessings to all of you moms out there! |

Introduction: This is a steal, literally, because I found it on Facebook and decided to use it this week. This is an expression of Praises to God- using the ABC’s. I thought this would be a good way to be able to Praise God and use every letter of the alphabet! Assignment: Try to think of one thing you can say to the glory of God- one thing to thank Him for, a positive thing you can say about Him, or one of His Names-using each letter of the alphabet. You are allowed to make up words- if you can justify them by making it clear what you mean- and you may also use any foreign language (but please explain what it means) - and you can also use a thesaurus or dictionary if you get stumped. I’m putting my list below so you’ll have to copy and paste this then remove my answers. It’s a bit of a challenge but I think you’ll enjoy it. Have fun with it! Alrighty-here is my rendition of this assignment: A is for Average (He uses people of average abilities and average lives to do great things) B is for Breath-taking (look around and you'll know what I mean) C is for Creative (think of all the ways the Lord blesses people!) D is for Dependable (like no other) E is for Easter Sunday (the day the Lord Jesus rose from the dead to take his rightful place on the Throne) F is for Far (He will separate you from your sins as far as East is to West) G is for Gospel (Praise the Lord for the glorious Gospels) H is for Honorable (depicts Him and what He expects us to be) I if for Inexhaustable (His mercy never ends) J is for Justice (He will give you beauty for ashes) K is for Knee (every knee shall bend, every head shall bow) L is for Lavish (how He extends his love to us) M is for Majesty N is for New (each day we are given the opportunity to start a new) O is for Out (He will always provide a way out of trouble) P is for Precise (as everything is so precise down to the most miniscule detail) Q is for Quandary (as I could put myself into one trying to figure out the Lord's ways) R is for Rescues (He will not let you fall into the depths of the pit -or in my case-pits, He will rescue you) S is for Searches (the Lord continually roams to find those who he can bless, and searches our hearts) T is for Tasty (all the good foods he has created to bless our palettes) U is for Unimaginable (what I know about Heaven-it is simply will be unimaginable glory and a sight to behold) V is for Vanquish (He will/has defeat(ed) all enemies of ours, and has already vanquished the Devil ) W is for Well (come to Him and draw from his well, which never runs dry) X is for Xerxes (as the Lord worked thru a gentile king to change the course of the Hebrews in Esther's time) Y is for Yesterday (He is the same today and will be tomorrow, as He was Yesterday -never changing) Z is for Zipline (He will take you for one amazing ride, and all you need to do is follow His instructions and enjoy the adventure-all the while being securely harnessed to His zipline) |

thought I would catch ya up on our goings on...basically, we are thru the storm on cold/flu/ear infections and seem to be back on the road to normalacy. And that is always a good thing! I am preparing to go out of town to do some major scrapping, laughing and general lack of sleeping for an entire weekend. My girlfriend, Michelle, has very generous inlaws who have a cottage up north (about 3 hours from us) that we are able to use. We pull late nights and scrap until our eyes bug outta our heads, or our fingers cannot tape, cut or stick something scrappy down anymore. I actually come home more exhausted than refreshed because of the lack of sleep, but oh how I look forward to the getaway. I have managed to get several pages done per getaway and that is the only way I am able to finally pull all the pages together to create the kids' yearbooks for their highschool days. I have not even begun to get to the baby pics and all those years between yet. But I am trying. Outside of that, not much homeschoolish to report. We are trying to plug away at the review products I have left to cover and to get some "to do" items/subjects covered so I can take the summer off. We actually have pretty much gone thru from last school year, into the summer (only had about 4 weeks off), then straight into the fall, with the addition of my toddling nephew, and the TOS review job. Wow. Been rather busy I must say-and I am so thankful for the good Lord's strength, encouragement and extra patience he has sent my way. Now for my sermon- I sure hope that you, on the other side of that screen, are plugging along and doing your best. No need for perfection -it can never be achieved-just take it one day at a time and do what you must for just that day. Tomorrow will have its own worries. God's grace will be anew each day. If you don't get to that most wonderful project or read that one extra book you feel the kiddos cannot survive without-do not fret over it. Sometimes, less is best-as you can try to cram all that stuff into their brains (information overload, one of the mistakes we tend to make, in my humble opinion), but have no control over what will stick. If you are banging your head against the proverbial wall cuz Jr. cannot recall his math facts or refuses to sit long enough to write a sentence; perhaps you need to re-evaluate what is needing to be put aside for a time, and bring out the less stressful activities to decompress your school day. I have been at this for 15 plus years and can tell you-even I panic a bit here and there when Jr is not where they should be-but then I do a God check...is it really what is best for that child, or am I trying to teach something because I feel they need to know it? Is it really necessary to know such and such at this particular age or can I put it off until they are older can actually retain/understand it? Have I lost focus on what they must know and forgot to add the fun into the week; or have I created a boring, senseless schedule that may meet time and calendar deadlines, but has so totally lost the real purpose of homeschooling the individual child- according to their abilities and needs? These are huge. If I can stay where God wants me to be with each child's goals, then I am doing just fine. How do I know if I am on track with what the good Lord wants me to do? Am I nervous, pensive or is my spirit a bit restless and not at peace about what I am asking of the child? Then I am out of God's will. Am I at peace and things are moving in a positive direction? Then I am on track. Does this mean I don't push a child when he/she needs a wee bit of it? Of course I gently push and encourage, sometimes I even have to whip out the "if you're not going to work for me, you're going to work for someone-school is your job-so decide" kind of motherly chat....but sometimes dear friends, they are just not ready. Some may be potty trained at 2 others 4, not because they are being stubborn but because their body just isn't ready for what is being asked of it. Some read at 5 others 9. Again, some are just not hardwired to do some of these things we are requiring. The thing I always try to remember (and of course, fail at now and again) is that I am an adult-what seems like second nature to me-once was very hard to get/understand. I cannot expect a 7 year old to think and learn like a 42 year old. I cannot expect a 14 year old to reason like an 80 year old seasoned veteran of life. It just isn't possible unless the Lord has intervened for HIS purpose -so check your motives, check your spirit. If you are doing things to be the SuperSchoolingSister of the HS world-then you are need of a tune up. My best seasons for "schoolin" have been when I stopped hogging the driver's seat and let the Lord get back into it where he belongs. Besides, it is way more fun to be a passenger 'cuz you can pay attention to the scenery out the window instead of trying to avoid ruts in the road and the bad driver next to you. He knows where he is leading you-so enjoy the ride, occassionally read the road map and give some directions and see if he takes you up on it...but stop trying to do it all. There is where the burn-out and one way ticket to the Burnt Toast Sanitarium visit comes in. Pray for guidance and take a day off-do something out of the norm for your school day and refresh and renew yourselves. When those more difficult days come (oh and they will dear friend, sometimes like a tidal wave and others like that little ache that turns into a giant migraine by the end of the day)-you will have the reserves you need to remain calm in the storm. Don't forget too, little get-aways like I am taking are not selfish of you, nor are they cruel to the children (maybe dad cuz he has to take over both roles The Lord's peace and grace be unto you-amen. |

and may not be used to that). Everyone, including mom, needs a bit of time away to remove themselves from the hubbub of daily life and to truly recharge those batteries.
