Eleven Oreos

"What's My Gift?

Last night when I was making the "good night" rounds, Mahala wanted to show me something she had made.

She had taken a thin rope, tied one end of it to the top bunk and the other end to Jared's lego table.  In the middle, she had tied the rope around a Rainbow Brite doll. Under the doll, she had put a shoe box turned upside down, and the doll's feet rested on the box.

Mahala would pull on the rope and make the doll dance on her little "stage".

I laughed and enjoyed watching the doll dance and twirl.

Mahala makes all kinds of interesting things. She has a full ranch she made stretched out on her bedroom floor with all kinds of cute details. She's made things out of paper that are amazing, like a bunkbed that stands 1 foot tall and 8 inches long for paper dolls. She puts together the most amazing outfits for herself...funky and cute...and collects little things to create doll and tiny animal homes.

I called Tim in to watch the doll dance, and we smiled and laughed and I said, "She has such a gift for creating fun things."

All of a sudden, from up and down the hallway, children in bed began calling out, "What's my gift, Mom? What's my gift?"

Children need us to name them.

Not only give them their birth names, but name them...tell them who they are and what they can be and how they can do it. They need to hear from someone they trust how wonderful they are so that when they are not wonderful, they know that someone saw something really good in there. So that they can know God made them for a purpose.

I sense that so much with my own children too. And I know that scene when you encourage one the others are right there wanting the same encouragement and direction. We have a wonderful and frightening power in their lives. I am so grateful that God is with us to enable us to fulfill our mission.

I don't disagree at all.

But ... I'm very unobservant. AND I have trouble listening. I'm not sure, myself, what my children's gifts are. I guess I need to ask the Father, but I struggle so much to hear Him, and there's so many things I should be talking to Him about, I get overwhelmed.

I don't think I know what my chidlren's gifts are! :-(

our very own personal specialness. That child doesn't sound gifted to me -- she sounds like a genious! I am always blown away by intricut, detailed talent and wonder how? How do people think up all the clever things they do? Is there anything left? Am I special too? Doesn't that start about twelve when everybody around you seems to be doing so much and you are making a mess of whatever you touch! Studying your children doesn't seem to end when they leave the nest. I am still observing, making notes, trying to figure out the thinking, the desires...
I know about the snowflakes but how in the world did God manage to make every
living being uniquely themselves?? Ain't it fun?
be blessed,
Miss Meg

Thank you for sharing. It is so easy to over look these precious moments and so wonderful
to capture them. Children love affermation as much as adults.
ps. I left you my adress on the previous coment I made so you could find me if you like.
I have you listed as one of my friends so that I wont losse you. Thanks.

This is so true, I've seen it here, and even felt it in my adult heart. I blogged about that...

That is really quite a profound message! Such a simple thing and so easy to overlook. I have been praying about this lately for my son whose gifts are less obvious than my other children's. He is a darling, sweet boy and I have been asking God to reveal his gifts to me so that I can encourage him. I'm sure when I recognize them, I will realize they were right before me all the while and I just was very deficient in seeing them. It is indeed so very important to name their gifts and acknowledge their precious uniqueness!

Blessings,
Courtney

What an amazing talent!! So creative and intricate! You are so right. Each of God's children has a gift. My dd's gifts were readily apparent since she was young. I believe in providing children with experiences so that they can discover their gifts early in life and what they might want to do with them.

My dd is very creative. She is a writer, very well spoken, a deep thinking, profound and has a talent for duplicating almost anything she sees. It has made her a very proficient black belt in karate among other things. She is very focused and has a deep sense of moral convictions. She is outspoken but gentle. She also has a talent for debate and humor.

My son's talents are harder to pinpoint. He is a very deep thinker and asks MANY questions. He taught himself to read at the age of 3 and has always been good with computers ...figured out how to use them, despite my efforts to keep him from it, when he was 2yrs old.

Nov. 18, 2006 - Birth Names

Posted by bubbebobbie

Birth Names often speak much about the Child and the gift inside them. As we read throughout the Bible we are told often the meanings of a child's name. And that name is often played out in the life of the child. Speaking their name, naming their gift is a hug to their hearts in so many ways. It sounds like your home is filled with hugs. I really enjoyed reading your post. Because of Jesus, Bobbie

We are a fairly large homeschooling family with one just starting out in life, some of school age, and one married with a family of his own. There are many things unique about us, but the first thing most people notice is that some of us are black and some of us are white. Thus our name...Eleven Oreos. This blog is for recording journal entries for our children...most specifically our daughters and daughters-in-law...in case there is anything they can learn from our turn on the seesaw.
