Momentary Panic, now Relieved!

I got up this morning, turned on the laptop and left to unload the dishwasher. I came back a few minutes later to find it completely frozen. Nothing seemed to work. I tried pushing the power button--to no avail. (I later found out that I just didn't hold it down long enough.) Shift-alt-delete didn't work either.
We had breakfast, and then I phoned our local computer man, and voila! Holding the button down longer did work. Am I dumb? This has never happened to me before. When the screen has frozen, I've always been able to restart it.
I had visions of losing everything, some major malfunction, and oh dear, how can we possibly afford another computer after just upgrading my husband's! Needless to say, I will be doing some backups today--and keeping them a bit more current than I have been . I think the beginning of March was the last time I did a backup.
Well, now that my fears are relieved, the shower and housecleaning calls. I'll be back later to catch up on everyone.
