To Do or Not to Do?

Should I start lessons on Monday or not? I was planning to start on August 4, but now that the children are finished with swimming, they seem to be having trouble finding things to do. I would only get two days done next week because the HOTM conference is next week and I want to listen as much as I can.
So the question becomes: Do I start a bit early and get two days done, or do I wait and start the following week?
I have mixed feelings about it. I am excited to start the new year, and looking forward to spending more time with the children. I am also sort of feeling reluctant to give up some of my summer free time. I have a few things on my list to do next week, but I could still do them even if we did lessons on two days. It would get us into the swing of things slowly.
I like the routine that regular lessons keeps us in, and I miss that during the summer. However I like the ability to play spontaneously during the summer--both with the children and without. What to do? Give me your opinions, folks. I would like to be a year-round homeschooler, but have never made it completely--I just have to take July off--but now I'm feeling like we might be ready to start, and it is still July for another week.

I started feeling the same way, so we did start a bit last week. DS began his new math and our daughter started her math today. Our first official day of school is still Aug. 4, but we got an early start on our math.
The kids wanted to start with math, so we did. Aug. 4th will be the first full load week.
Our kids are a bit out of sync without the structure that lesson times provide. We are all ready to get back into the swing of things. Too much free time has been too much of a good thing at our house!

Hmmm, I can see you difficulty. I would be the same way. With my kids being older, they do more work on their own. But this year I did let them start their curriculum early, though our 'official' start date isn't until August 13th or 14th. But if I had to do work with the kids, I don't think I would have started early. I have things I'm trying to finish up first, it would be too stressful for me.
So how's that for no advice at all? No seriously, if it will help with the kids, and won't stress you out, then I say go for it. On the other hand if you want one more week for you, I say go for that too. :)

If you're this much on the fence, do just a little bit of school to easy into things. Like start on some math review or something that the kids can kinda do themselves. This week, we are only doing math and language arts workbooks. Time to refresh their memories and give their minds a little warmup!
Oh, we also like to do mazes and puzzles that I print from the internet (word find, crosswords, logic puzzles). It might be good to have some stuff printed out ahead of time to keep them busy-when-they're-bored during the HOTM Conference!

I'm not a homeschooling mom but with public school I really like starting in the middle of the week and having a "light" week. It just seems to make it easier to adjust to having a "schedule" again.
