Registered homeschoolers trying to dual enroll at a Pinellas public school or play public school sports have not always had an easy time of it since the school system did away with zoned schools and went to the school choice plan. It seems there was never a written policy and it was not always handled consistently. A homeschool mom with a son playing sports has worked tirelessly to lobby Pinellas for changes. As soon as the new plans for the revised school choice plan are finalized, look for Dot Clark at the Office of Partnership schools to be sending out a copy of the new written policy to all registered homeschoolers. If you have any problems or questions I can be contacted at district5@fpea.com.
I wanted to share with you a few timely reminders of upcoming FPEA events.
* If you have a graduating senior and are a FPEA member, don’t forget to look into the scholarships offered by the FPEA. The scholarship application form is in your “Guide to Homeschooling in Florida” or can be found at www.fpeascholarshipfund.com. Applications must be in by March 1, 2008. Please note there is a special scholarship available to Pinellas county students that have a heart for Christian service.
* If your senior is thinking about marching in our state graduation ceremony, registration forms and fees have to be in by April 1, 2008. In addition to the actual ceremony, there will be a dance, buffet dinner, special speaker and senior activities. You must be a FPEA member to participate. Forms can be found in your Almanac or on the website, www.fpea.com.
* Just a reminder to all homeschoolers, the FPEA will be hosting our 2nd Annual Day at the Capitol in Tallahassee on Friday, April 4, 2008. Last year, Gov. Christ signed the first ever proclamation in Florida recognizing home education with its own special week. I hope you can join me in attending as we introduce ourselves to state legislators and tour the area. If you do, please drop me an email and hopefully we can work out details to meet.
Visit www.fpea.com for updated details as they are finalized; also visit www.seetallahassee.com and click on Visitor Information to learn more about staying in Tallahassee.
* The rooms go fast, so now's the time to be making your room reservations at Shingle Creek Resort for the 21st Annual FPEA convention, held May 22-24 in Orlando. If you haven't been in a while, you're in for a treat. There are exciting new speakers to choose from, even more vendors, as well as separate camps for teens and children. Make it a family vacation or go with your friends and have a ladies get away. If you are a leader or potential leader, plan on attending the leaders’ forum Thursday with additional speakers, workshops, luncheon and tea. If you are an FPEA member, your registration price is greatly reduced, so if you’re not already a member, be sure and join before April 1, 2008. Check out our website, www.fpea.com for the latest convention information.
