The Story of Marmee's Kitchen

I was newly married...we had a home out in the middle of nowhere and we
only had 1 car. So the days were long while my dear husband brought home the bacon and I was at home alone. Money wasn't always plentiful and I began to turn the wheels of my little brain as to what I could do at home to earn a little pocket money.
I was ecstatic when my husband agreed to buy me a sewing machine for $25 that an acquaintance had for sale. They were more than happy to sell it to us! It barely stitched a straight line and the tension, no matter where I set it, made a pile of knots, but I sewed anyway! Once I realized there were other ladies out there who couldn't wield a needle - I was in business! They were delighted with my creations and I was delighted with the extra spending money.
Over the years, I added to our family income by doing all sorts of things! One of our biggest ventures included the whole family when we opened a bulk food & grain market in our back yard in a re-furbished barn.
After a few years as our customer base increased beyond our wildest dreams, I had the idea to write down all the recipes and tell all the tips I constantly shared with my customers. We had just been given a computer by my dear daddy. I loved a typewriter, but when I saw how a computer worked I was in total awe!! My dear daughter took to it like a fish to water. I continually say she must have been born with computer brain cells - she just naturally knows how to figure out all the technical stuff! So, I wrote it all out on paper and she formatted my very first book, Martha's Family Cookery Book. I never dreamed I'd ever write a book, but my husband has been telling me for years, "Why don't you just write a book?"
To see my first book in actual print was a thrill. We never even considered any option but self -publishing and now after 8 publications we are so blessed to have learned many of the ins and outs of self-publishing. It is a great way to go!
After 9 years with the bulk foods market, we sold our little 7 acre homestead. We sold the land and property to one of our faithful store customers and sold the business separately to another homeschooling family.
We moved to a new homestead of 130 acres and I was ready for a reprieve. I thought my days of home business were done. I had a wonderful year of renewal and rest after we moved. Then that itch to have a home business started up again and extra money to spend on developing our new homestead was a bit of a factor...thru a small series of events, Marmees Kitchen was launched as a web store in December 2004.
The business has grown by leaps and bounds, mainly due to exposure given to me by The Old Schoolhouse. I have been blessed beyond words by the kind ladies and homekeepers that have patronized my business. I love to share and being able to minister with so many women via the web has been wonderful.
I send Marmees Home Journal out FREE each month to my subscribers. Marmees Kitchen offers my publications, some publications of some other kindred spirits that I am so happy to be able to offer. I have ingredients, kitchenware, BOSCH mixers, and offer many of my favorite things that are wonderful for giving as gifts. I'd love to have you visit me in my kitchen ~ ANYTIME ~ ANYDAY! You're always welcome in Marmee's Kitchen!
This new year of 2006 I've joined hands with Rebekah Wilson of HopeChestLegacy.com and we are offering a lovely new idea The Keepsake Guild. I certainly hope you'll have a chance to visit and enjoy looking at what we have to offer at THE GUILD. We are helping to build future homes ~ one keepsake at a time!
I think with learning web design and publishing my 8th book this year - I've learned more this year than any other year in my life! I love to learn and hope that desire never is quenched! It keeps this Marmee feeling young!
