Jeannie Fulbright’s Story
It all began four years ago. After spending an hour at the library with very loud, unruly and embarrassing toddlers, lugging home the maximum 23 books, all on the topic we had chosen, we sat down to read about astronomy. First page of first book reads, “The solar system began in a big bang from a cloud…” Oops. Second paragraph, “Evolution…,” skip. Next page, “The sun was formed 15 billion…” Oh dear. Let’s skip to the earth chapter, “Life on earth evolved…” Next book. On and on this went. If the book wasn’t full of conjecture about the big bang and evolution, it was dull and dry, making the whole subject lose its appeal. I knew my kids. They were moments away from losing all interest in astronomy. I could also see the little spores of doubt about creation that were released into their young, impressionable hearts because of this unsupported evolutionary theory presented as fact. So, we put all the books away. I bought some creation science books on astronomy but they were all over their heads. I bought some other astronomy curricula, but they required too much cutting and pasting. With the exhausting duties of toddlerhood and domestic chaos, I was not organized enough to read instructions and I needed to keep mess to a minimum. If we were going to make a mess, it needed to be fun for me. I needed a science curriculum that would captivate my kids, something that glorified God, something that was easy for me to use, and something that was fun and interesting for me, too! I really just wanted a great book to read to them. This was the beginning of my journey as a science textbook author. As a writer, I had previously written mostly for women in my career, but I enjoyed all writing. I knew that if I wrote an astronomy book in a way that sounded like I was just chatting with my kids about space, it would engage them and convey a love for science. Having a profound interest in my science classes at the And so, the book that evolved (big sardonic grin) was Exploring Creation with Astronomy. In this book, and in all the other books in the series, I include narration prompts throughout each lesson, because I always forgot to have my kids narrate to me. I also included notebooking assignments, because I love the notebooking concept and believe in its merits. Each lesson ends with a hands-on project or experiment, because kids retain knowledge longer by working with their hands. My goal was that through writing an engaging “living” book, and following these three methods: narration, notebooking and hands-on involvement, a love for science and long-term retention would follow. I really feel this is a calling. If you have ever felt called to do something, homeschooling for example, you know the joys and trials that accompany doing God’s will. Yet, though you waiver, you persevere, knowing it’s right. The continued passion I have for writing these books is evidence to me that God is in it. You see, normally, in my flesh, I have great – usually grandiose – ideas that I pursue with gusto, and then…after a while, I lose interest. Indeed, I have tons of unfinished projects – including several unfinished books. However, God persists with refueling my passion for each new science book in this series. I especially enjoy seeing the children who are using my books, or hearing from their parents online. It reminds me of why God has called me to this – not for me, but for Him. This summer, an evolutionist member of my homeschool group became a diehard creationist after reading my astronomy book, and then followed up with several adult level creation science books. She now hands out creationist literature to everyone! Wow. That makes my continually messy, disorganized house completely worth it. I’m so humbled that God would use me in this way. My continued prayer is that God would work through these books to give children (and parents!) a strong foundation in creation and their faith. The enemy has used the lie of evolution in powerful and deceiving ways – from the holocaust to the immoral culture we now know. Winston Churchill once said, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” Though we were late in our response to this insidious evolutionary conjecture, you are now fully dressed and ready to shine forth the light, the truth, and “to always be ready to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” Jeannie Fulbright Author of Apologia’s Young Explorer’s Series: Exploring Creation with Astronomy Exploring Creation with Botany Exploring Creation with Zoology I: The Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Exploring Creation with Zoology II: The Aquatic Creatures of the Fifth Day Visit my website www.jeanniefulbright.com for more information on homeschooling and free notebook pages that accompany the Exploring Creation books.
