Swapping Blog Ads for FREE?!?
8:53 AM, Feb. 7, 2006
We talk a lot about blogging here at PRMama. Here's my take on homeschooling businesses blogging...

Consumers, especially homeschoolers, want to know there's a REAL person behind the business. We want to know WHO we're dealing with. We want to know that the business has integrity, that they've put our needs as a homeschooler above (or at least equal to) their need to make money! Will we be dealt with fairly if we have a problem? Will there be someone to talk to if a problem arises? Isn't that what you want to know?

Have you ever thought about these things? About what the consumer would want? Address these in your blog. Give them a "peek" into your everyday life. Tell them about how little Johnny threw up all over you last night. Tell them you're struggling to keep the house clean.

Whenever I see the "realness" of a business that caters to homeschoolers, I'm more likely to want to support them. I'm also more likely to trust that they are going to be honest with me in their advertising - that they're not going to give me a bunch of "hype" and deliver something that really isn't all it's cracked up to be.

This is especially true with online businesses.  How do we know what we're seeing is reality? We can't touch it, feel it, try it, or "see" it. We are forced to believe the words we are reading, except of course when we have a trusted source who has given us their opinion.

Maybe you're saying "Okay, so you've convinced me, but how do I get others to read and become aware of  my blog?"  Well, you can start by signing up for one here at www.HomeschoolBlogger.com. Then post the URL on your website, in your sig line, anywhere you can to get the word out.  Another service that can help you, and has already helped numerous bloggers and businesses, is a venture started by a fellow homeschooling Dad. Danny Carlton recently added BlogAdSwap to his growing list of website ventures.

Here's what Danny says about BlogAdSwap

You put time and effort into your blog, and you want people to know about it. Joining blog rolls is fine, but takes up so much space. While eventually someone may notice your blog name in a list of 5 gazillion other blogs, is it really that effective?

Our goal is to provide a simple way for people to join and manage their ad, as well as providing an ad that's large enough to be noticed (without taking too much space). We also want to focus on targeted ads, by allowing ads and sites to be targeted to specific categories. So far this has resulted in amazingly high click-through ratios, which means the responses to the ads are much better than the average ads.

In essence, it's a way for you to use your blog to promote itself across a wide network of similar blogs.

Check out Danny's service, and then tell me what you think!

I've been using it since he first started, and tonight as I was browsing through some blogs, I saw my ad come up. :) I've gotten a few clicks and enjoyed seeing other interesting blogs pop up on my site which I wouldn't have found otherwise.

There are dangers of swapping ads with unknown people

A new affiliate of my company has a blog here on homeschoolblogger.com. As I was checking out *her* and learning if she and I would work well in an affiliate/company relationship, her BlogAdSwap featured a thoroughly occultic-looking ad. Curious, I followed it, and found the person had a filthy mouth with a mind in the gutter. As a Christian, believing that my prospective affiliate was a Christian, I was concerned. When I mentioned it to my prospective affiliate (with the link to the blog I visited), she was aghast and removed the BlogAdSwap from her blog.

So I learned two things: 1) my new affiliate was a lot like me and I was happy with our new relationship, and 2) If BlogAdSwap does not become moderated or monitored in some way, I will never trust it.

That was my first experience with BlogAdSwap.
