Dream Big!

Posted 10:46 PM, Jun. 1, 2006

Not sure if I mentioned it here yet this week, but TOS is celebrating it's 5th birthday this week.  Yep, this magazine that started out 5 years ago as an enewsletter born out of an ebay curriculum business, has really grown.

For Paul & Gena it's been a wild ride.  Who would have thought 5 years ago that they would be publishing the largest Christian homeschool magazine with over 16,000 subscribers worldwide?  Who would have thought they would have had the opportunity to minister to homeschoolers over the pond in the UK?  They would be the first ones to tell you that all of the glory for the growth and success of TOS belongs to directly to God.  They've had to learn a lot along the way through research, wise counsel from others, and just good old fashioned trial and error.  And they've always been blessed by God's grace to take care of things even when they've made mistakes.

So, we press on here at TOS.  Remember the other day when I shared a press release with you?  Well I had also written another one about HSB's 1st Anniversary - Blogging Unites Families Worldwide.  I submitted it to 4 of the free press release services - www.arrivenet.com, www.prleap.com, www.prweb.com, and www.pressmethod.com and a few local media outlets in Florida where they were having the Blogger Brunch at FPEA.

We didn't get picked up by the local Florida media, but we have a man from Japan contact us about distributing TOS in Japan!  We've also recently had 2 people from Australia contact us about distributing TOS there.  And shhhh.... we have a big international promotion coming soon.

So as you're dreaming and planning for your homeschool related busniness, dream big.  Maybe even internationally.  Homeschooling is growing not only in the US, but also in many other countries.  And they don't have a lot of homeschooling materials available in some countries yet.  Think about it.  Dream big.

The Four Info Personalities - How will you reach them all?

Posted 10:13 PM, Apr. 25, 2006

I came across a website the other day that focuses on marketing to women.  We're a different breed, you know?  We have specific likes and dislikes. We're moody. We are stereotyped (sometimes demeaningly).  We're picky.  We're smart.  We can be ditzy.  We're somewhat unpredictable.  We're hormonal.

I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, right?  In addition to our differing "personality" types (to which there are a zillion tests to quantify), someone thinks we have "info personalities."  You gotta hand it to this "someone", they're pretty right on the market - so to speak.  According to this article the four info personalities of women are: Ultimate Info-tasker, The Day Planner, The Environmental Homebody, and Wired Adventurer.

How can you market to these different personality types?  One woman may ONLY go to homeschooling conventions.  One type will ONLY read a magazine or other periodical related to homeschooling.  The other type will ONLY use the Internet.  Maybe the other will ONLY be persuaded by word-of-mouth.  How will you reach them all?

Spread out your marketing.  Look for ways to reach ALL of those women out there.  Think outside the box.

"If you build it, they will come."  Start building. Target those info personalities.  They will come.

The Carnival of Homeschooling

Posted 8:11 AM, Apr. 11, 2006

The 15th Carnival of Homeschooling is being hosted by our very own Tami of the PRMama Team.

If you aren't familiar with blogging carnivals, it is a compilation of blog entries submitted by various bloggers centered on a theme (like homeschooling).  Each week when a new carnival is posted, the host posts information on how to contribute to the next one.  Anyone can join in the fun.  Participating in the carnival is a great way to hear what other homeschoolers are blogging about and increase traffic to your own blog.

While the carnival isn't the place to advertise your product, it is a great way to share information about what is near and dear to your heart.  Take a look at how a few vendors participated this time!

Laurie Bluedorn of Trivium Pursuit shares her favorite books to read aloud. She shares how they started reading aloud and a list of some of their favorite books.

Dena Wood of Dena's Deliberations talks about her son and how delayed learning can promote success and instill confidence.

Next, Jennie of Creative Homeschooling will share a fun, hands-on activity to do with your early reader that includes sticky notes.

And we have a first-ever entry in the Carnival this week from the Davises of HomeschoolBuzz.com. Kathy lists "10 Things to do for Homeschool Sick Days."

A great article to follow the CM philosophy is this article by Barbara of The Imperfect Homeschooler. She asks, "Who does it really help when we say children must learn to read or do math by a certain age? Certainly not the child!"

Karen, the Queen of Carrots, and the writer of Introducing the World shares her perspective on as a former high school teacher, and what she loves about homeschooling to prepare her future students, so they are ready to tackle the things she wants to teach.

I think you'll enjoy visiting the blogs in the Carnival of Homeschooling and joining in too.  It's just another great way to market yourself to homeschoolers for free.
