Chicken pox and Shingles

We have two boys in our church who have the chicken pox. Most likely they developed it from their grandfather who has Shingles. A friend told me you can develop chicken pox from someone who has Shingles. I knew she was correct, but I had other questions so I did some research..

Shingles

Chicken Pox

Did you know you can get chicken pox from someone who has Shingles? Yes, you can, it's the same virus.

Did you know that you can't get Shingles from someone who has Shingles?. Correct. You can't. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus, which never leaves your body. It lays dormant in your system and can reoccur, usually after the age of 50. It can appear anywhere on your body and can be serious-affecting your eyes and hearing. It certainly is painful. But it in itself is not contagious, unless you've never had chicken pox, or the vaccine. But you will not get Shingles from someone who has Shingles

Can you get chicken pox more than once? Yes. But it's rare. But it does happen and usually because the first case was a mild one.

When are you contagious? Well, that's a hard one. Usually you're contagious before you know you're sick. Then you're contagious all through the rash till the last pox is crusted over. That can take up to 10-15 days, or less if your case was a mild one. In Julia's case she was 'quarantined' for about 15 days.

Should I get my child vaccinated? That's up to you. There are many varying opinions .  You can develop Shingles from the chicken pox shot later on. However, the chance is less than if you had the actual illness, but it is possible.

And, yes, there is a immunization shot for chicken pox and for Shingles.

Anyway there is tons of information out there. I only provided a few sites.

Thanks for the info. I know my aunt had shingles awhile ago. My kids had the shot. I wish that Grace did not have it. It's better for girls to have the actual disease to make sure they have immunity when pregnant. Ugh.

The shingles are horrible. I've known some people who get it and it's so painful for them. Hope those in your church who are sick get better very soon!

Probably the reason you couldn't leave a comment is because I have mine set up that only registered users can leave a comment. I've had some nasty comments from anonymous users, so just changed my settings so I wouldn't have to get upset. lol Let me know if that works for you after you sign in. If not, I'll need to find out what the problem is.

Hope you are feeling better!!

Love, Julie

Great information. I have heard that now your child has to get a chicken pox booster before living in most college dorms. Did Brandon get vaccinated? Sometimes I wonder if it was a good decision to get the boys vaccinated. Only time will tell.

Have a great weekend!

Chris

I knew you could get them again if your first case was mild.
