Show and Tell

Posted on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 10:13 in Show and Tell

The last few months have a been busy and full of 'milestones'. In July my daughter turned 16 & she learned to drive . Last month, she started working (her first job)  at the local mall.  In the last few weeks, she has taken several college placements tests, including her GED and passed with very good marks! Yesterday, she registered for classes at the local college. I am overwhelmed, she is only 16. She is showing so much maturity and responsibility.

This is my daughter at one day old. Still swollen from a very difficult delivery. And below that ,is a picture of her today.

Please pray for her, she has many things to face in the next few months and years. Like the TV commercial "Life comes at you fast"!

She was awarded the 'Featured Blogger' Award at the HSB Backyard! See that post here . And you can visit her blog at Cherryblossoms and leave her a comment!

Show and Tell, Stranger Safety by John Walsh

Posted on Friday, November 2, 2007 at 07:28 in Show and Tell

This is an odd Show and Tell but I enjoyed this DVD so much I wanted to share it with anyone who has small children and need help teaching them about "stranger danger".

This movie has been around for a few years. My son has reached the age where I felt he was ready to see the DVD.I have always tried to teach him about "stranger danger and .I was pleased  at how well  this  movie was put  together. The movie was funny but honest w/o being scary for the child. Brandon  enjoyed it and I feel learned from watching. I've heard him 'playing' some of the tips he saw.. If you're not familiar with the movie, it was put together by John  Walsh from America's Most Wanted. As mother and a 'retired'  911 operator and anything involving children being hurt is near to my heart. I found this movie to be wonderful way to teach your children about Stranger Safety. I borrowed it from my local library, but I plan to purchase it. It's well worth the money.

Show and Tell, Friday

Posted on Friday, October 19, 2007 at 09:33 in Show and Tell

This picture  is a few years old (Sally, we need to update soon). The kids have grown a lot in that short period of time. All the ladies, are very special.  In the middle is my pastors wife (Diamonds) and her girls in front row (dressed in yellow, blue and red dresses, and one on her lap). Can you find me?

Show and Tell, Vinegaroon

Posted on Friday, October 12, 2007 at 08:21 in Show and Tell

I found this little guy on our back deck. Actually, we've had several in the past month. Ick. No, Thats not me holding it. I found this picture on the internet.. GROSS!!

The Vinegarroon (also spelled Vinegaroon), Mastigoproctus giganteus, is a type of Whip Scorpion, an arachnid that emits
a vinegar-like mist (containing mostly acetic acid). The Vinegarroon is not venomous and is not a true scorpion. It is also
not a true spider, but is related to spiders, true scorpions, and ticks. Vinegarroons are invertebrates that are found in the
southern USA and in Mexico. Other Whip Scorpions are found in India, Japan, and New Guinea.

Classification: Class Arachnida (arachnids) , Order Uropygi (containing about 100 species of Whip Scorpions).

Anatomy: Whip Scorpions have four pairs of legs and a hard, protective exoskeleton. There are two organs near the base
of the tail produce a vinegar-like mist which the Whip Scorpion emits when it is irritated. The long, whip-like tail is used as
a sensory organ and does not have a stinger (unlike true scorpions, which have a stinger at the tip of the segmented tail).

Diet: Vinegarroons are carnivores (meat-eaters) that hunt at night (they are nocturnal). They use
their powerful pincers to catch prey. During the day, Vinegarroons hide under leaves or rocks

Show and Tell

Posted on Friday, October 5, 2007 at 07:17 in Show and Tell

This was given to us nine years ago. Our former Pastor grew up in Africa, deep in the heart of Africa to be exact. His parents were missionaries and have a lot of interesting stories to tell. One time while his parents were visiting, we had them over for dinner ,and they presented us with this gift. It was made in Africa. We love this picture and have had it hanging up in our house for years. We need to get it framed properly but frankly I am afraid to let anyone mess with it. It is unique in that it is made from butterfly wings!! Now, I caution you, don't let your mind think about that to much , it's not a pretty reallity.  Still it's special because it came from some very special people, who we love very much, and it's very pretty.  They also gave us a book they wrote about some of their adventures in Africa. I will save the book for another time.
