13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. (James 4:13-17, New King James Version)
Even if we pray for His guidance, do we remain open for changes of plan? For Him to call us in a different direction, or to a different action once we get where we are going? Do we have hearts that are joyful to hear His direction, no matter where that leads?
Or do we have prideful hearts that think they know better than the Lord of the universe?
When we make our own plans, without being open to what the LORD's plan is, and it turns out that He has other ideas, we will become irritated or even angry when it turns out that we can't do as we planned.
What would change if we had first sought God's will for the future, and then afterward remained truly willing and open to any change of direction He lead us to? If each day we sought Him to keep us on course and give us direction for that day?
Since His will ends up happening anyway, the difference would primarily be in our heart and attitude. If we remained open to the Lord's leading, not setting our hearts on our own plans, we would be happy to hear His direction rather than being upset when our own plans fall through.
Knowing what we should do, that we should seek His will, that we should have a humble heart that is open to His leading... knowing this and yet choosing not to do it, is sin.
Lord, I seek Your will today. Guide me and show me where to go, what to say, even what to feel and think about. I want you to be Lord of my day, and Lord of my whole life. Guide me today, and whatever plans I have, let me have a humble heart that recognizes that Your plans are the perfect ones, not mine.
