Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish. (Psalm 1, New King James Version)
Re-read verses 1-3 of this Psalm:
1 Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
(Psalm 1:1-3, New King James Version)
Where do we get our guidance and counsel from? Do we look to the world and its "wisdom" on how to accomplish things and handle situations? Do we trust in the counsel of our society, or do we trust in God and in His word?
For example, when we want to know how to raise our children, do we emphasize what our society says is "normal" or "important"? Things like socialization, having fun, being athletic, getting good grades, having lots of extra curricular activities for the college application, and other things like that? Or do we put our strongest emphasis on things like Godly character, reading God's word, love for others, patience, perseverance kindness, self-control, gentleness, and high moral standards?
If we have a child for whom learning is easy, and another for whom it is painstakingly difficult, who gets the most praise? Is it the one who breezed through the test with almost no effort, and got an "A"? Or is it the one stuck with it, studied hard, doing their very best, demonstrating perseverance and patience, putting forth great effort, only to get "C" on the test when they were finished? Surely both should be praised, but who worked harder?
Moving this thought away from parenting, lets look at how we seek to impact society. When we want to see social change, do we rely on the methods of the world? Do we depend solely on things like protest, propaganda, and letter writing? Or do we get on our knees and travail in prayer for our nation and our world? Do we fast and pray and ask our Lord to send revival? Or do we think we legislate godliness, and produce goodness through our efforts alone?
When it comes to handling money, do we follow the worlds advice? Do we keep all we possibly can for ourselves, and look out for "number one"? Or do we ask God what He wants us to do with the finances He placed in our hands? Do we give to those in need? Do we hold on to our money with a death grip, or do we keep it offered up to God with an open palm?
Do we meditate on God's word and His wisdom, and live according to that? Or do we copy what we see the world around us doing?
Lord, let me be planted next to the river of Your word, nourished by Your word and Your Holy Spirit. Let me walk in Your way, let me seek Your will, and stand upon the solid ground of Your word.
